Let’s face it. It’s been a month since the release of 12 and 12P. Nothing has changed since then and probably won’t. It might be a lost of time to keep this going on because panels will still be the same and software too. And Apple doesn’t care.

I got Bamboozled....compared my 12 Pro Max to my XS Max with no True Tone ( I hate True Tone) and it was jaw dropping. XS Max was crisp and white with a blue tint. I phone 12 was yellow very yellow tint. Another reason why I am keeping my XS Max for at least another year. Soooo glad someone started this thread.

I wish I had kept mine for another year as well.... had i known I was going to pay $1300 for a piss stained screen i wouldn't have sold my XS Max

This is pretty much a 1:1 situation of my Mini compared to my X. Everything from the description to the pictures.
Sorry to hear you’re experiencing the same, it’s no fun. Have you decided what to do with it yet? I’m currently leaning towards a return and waiting a month or two to see if anything changes.

I havent noticed any difference. Ive just seen post complaining about it. When you say contrast is reduced, does that have anything to do with text looking not as crisp?

No, text looks crisp. After correcting white balance, the other differences are so subtle through my photographer eyes, I really don’t mind.

Signed up just so that I can post this.
iPhone 12 Pro Max arrived last Friday. Immediately transferred across from my 7 plus. Set up nice and easy. I've held off 4 years to upgrade, as was waiting for the right model, and with the camera's on this thing it felt like the time was right.
Having read previews, all the raving reviews etc over the last couple of months I was really excited to start using this thing. Honestly have to say, I am really disappointed with the whole thing. Firstly for me, the curved edges of my 7 plus make it nice and comfy to hold, and possible to use with one hand. This new phone is definitely painful to hold, these new straight edges are not for me. That aside... I am here to add my details about the screen quality.
The screen, far from being "the brightest that Apple has ever produced" is way dimmer than my 7 plus. Next to each other the 12 pro max is YELLOW. 7 plus is nice and bright, with clean whites. This new phone looks like crap in comparison. Viewing angles are worse, if it tilt the 12, the yellowness disappears and the screen becomes whiter, but worse to read...
The worse thing is, when I have a black background, the whole right hand side of the screen has what I can only describe as LED Backlight Bleed??? So a whole band of green highlight all down the right hand side.
I have gone back and watched all the reviews that I watched before. Nobody complained about a poor screen? In fact everyone was raving about how amazing it is?
I find this hard to believe.
Utterly utterly disappointed, waited for 4 years for a new phone to be WORSE than my 2016 one!!!
I feel your pain. I read all the reviews and was super stoked. You are correct about the edges and the display. I had the same experience. I have an iphone XS Max and it has a white crisp display and feels amazing in hand due to the rounded edges. Actually a pleasure to hold considering it is 6.5 inch phone. I upgraded from a 7 plus and it was well worth it. I might suggest this phone as there are refurbished models online in the apple store right now. I returned my 12 Max Pro.

This isn't a true "fix" for the yellow screen problem, but I was able to get my phone to display quite accurate colors by doing the following:

  1. Using the color filter as others here have suggested, then
  2. activating night shift, but pulling back the intensity to a very low level
The problem with using just the color filter as others here have suggested is that it's too strong. That's where simultaneously using night shift at a low level comes in handy.

This doesn't really solve the underlying problem with the screen. But it does make me think that, in theory, the problem should be fixable with software.

If you use the Red/Green Filter, Green/Red Filter or the Blue/Yellow Filter, yes, but not when you use color tint. The former reduces the respective colors for colorblindness I assume. I used Color Tint and the Colors/Contrast on both my iPhone 12 mini and iPhone XS are exactly the same, even better on the 12 mini. Compared it to multiple websites, images etc.
Ya it’s not obvious to me either, after calibrating against my X-Rited monitors, my phone’s white balance has no undertones of pink/green or blue/yellow so maybe that helps any color shift. When I set Text to max, flipping the Color Filters switch I barely notice any contrast change, maybe a slight downward in brightness and increasing that easily eliminates any difference. Perhaps there’s worse variance out there, idk.

I was comparing my friend’s 12PM earlier and it looked yellow and dull, could not reach anywhere bright as mine. Turns out his Accessibility “Reduce White Point” was On for whatever reason. He was OCD’ing since Friday lol because everything else was Off.

fwiw I rarely have TrueTone On, it’s useful purpose is to warm (yellow) things up to ease your eyes at night before bed. Long time users of TT probably already know it’ll mess up your image editing.

TT is actually meant to adapt your white balance to the current lighting, similar to how a piece of paper looks different temps in different lighting. Your thinking of Night Shift, which is designed to reduce blue light emitted in order to make it easier to fall asleep.

Taken with 6s plus. These photos IMO make the 12 pro max look good but in real life they look really yellow to me compared to the 6s plus. I must be one of those people who prefer cool blue tint ? Idk. I want cooler phone.

For those with dim screens try toggling auto brightness in accessibility on and off a few times, sliding the brightness around as you do so.

Then go back to your Home Screen, mine was super dim and I always had to keep it above 50%, but after messing with auto brightness it seems much better.

I think there is a bug with auto brightness and the HDR screens these pros have.

Could not stand the default warm screen but adjusting colour tint helped me!

I just got home from comparing iPhone 12 display models at four different stores (with auto brightness, True Tone, and night shift all turned off), and I've come away with some interesting information.
  1. I've compared 14 iPhone 12s now, and all of them had very similar color temperatures when viewed head on, which was a little warmer (more yellow, less blue) than my old iPhone X.
  2. The largest difference I've noticed between screens is the color tint when viewed off angle... some screens tint green (non-Pros with serials C7C (1) and C7D (1), Pros with serials F2L (1) and F17 (1), and all models with serial G6T (3)), and some screens tint blue (non-Pros with serial F17 (2), and all models with serial DNP (5)), which looks much better in my opinion. It's possible the green vs blue tint is completely random and not tied to the serial / manufacture facility, but there sure seem to be some strong trends, especially with green tint for serial G6T and blue tint for serial DNP. I wonder if the different off angle tints represent different display manufacturers.
  3. Pro Maxes with serial G6T have noticeably lower max brightness than my Pro Max with serial F2L, so much so that the brightness looked more similar to screens in non-Pro models.
Thanks for this, really impressive job!! However I must report that my 12 Pro Max is an F2L and the brightness sucks compared to my wife's (which is a G6T). So I'd say that even among the same batch, there are noticeable differences.

I just got off the phone with Apple support (called from the UK) and have a potential solution for anyone who received their phone (purchased directly from Apple) after the 10th November.

This will include all owners of an iPhone 12 Pro Max or Mini.

You have until 8th January, at least here in the UK, to start a return on the item for a full refund.

My plan is to use my phone with the Color Filter workaround until the new year, and then replace with a newly manufactured unit.

If the problem is still not fixed by then, will play by ear at the time.

I asked about wear and tear.

He said Apple will honour the refund with wear and tear that might be associated with a couple months of usage. He said that if there was any user damage caused by dropping the phone or similar, such as a cracked screen, then the phone may be returned, and a refund void.

Since I'm using a sturdy case, this is not an issue for me, nor many others.

A side note is that the representative was not aware of any display issues on the phones.

Great news. Here in Italy you have until January the 21st to return them.

If you preordered it on November 6th does it count or is it just 14 days?
It's the date that you received the phone.

I pre-ordered my Max on the 6th, and received it on launch day (13th).

Therefore, anyone who purchased a Max or Mini should have the extended return window.

Can these piss yellow/green meant to be grey color in dark mode be fixed with a software update?

What the hell was apple thinking, didn’t they see how these screens look when dark mode is on.

Well I blame Jony. Why did he leave.
The problem here is apple buying cheap crap oled panels, I’m never buying a launch day iPhone again, I’ll wait till people can actually confirm the screen doesn’t have a yellow tint. (Not Youtubers)

What’s the point of having this lovely designed phone, amazing processor, extra ram, big 6.7” screen, then all you see is contrast is dull and whites and greys look yellow.

Thread is 78 pages long, surprise surprise, still no news article from macrumors, wonder how much apple is paying them to keep quiet.
