My iPad

I have a noticeable yellow/green tint down the left side of my iPad. I'm getting used to it. My backlight bleed is fine thou. Very happy with that.

I have tried the burn in method of leaving the iPad on all night on full brightness in white image. Not sure if that has improved anything but the tint is still extremely noticeable on the left hand side of the spit keyboard.

What do you guys think?

I think the horrible green tint (1st pic, white screen) on the RIGHT hand side of the screen is the problem. The left side looks fine.

I did not want to wait and see if the yellow went away so I returned my iPad to Apple and while waiting for an exchange via Apple on April 2nd I decided to try my luck at Best Buy and bought another 64GB Verizon 4G and believe it or not this one has a magenta cast to it! Purple Skies anyone?

I plan on using the ipad 3 as a photo portfolio and my iPad 1 has spot on perfect images that match my Apple 30" Cinema so I know it can be done!?
I just don't want to have purplish skies in my images!

So for three days straight it has been on full brightness and on a blank white google page and I have not seen one iota of improvement, I guess a magenta color cast is a flaw and not part of the "glue" drying problem.

I will compare it to iPad #3 in a week & if it too has a problem I will wait a few months before I try again.

Honestly... I just don't believe a lot of these people who are saying their ipad 3 is perfect with no problems. If it's truly perfect... take a picture and post. And make sure it shows the dictation key on the keyboard so we know it's an ipad 3. I've been through 8 and they all have some kind of screen/tint problem.

The problem is your average consumer looks and it and thinks that whatever they see in terms of the panel is exactly what they're supposed to see. Then you have the group we all fall in, we know what a decent IPS panel is supposed to look like and this definitely isn't it.

Agree. My plan will probably be return the units bought from the Apple store since they only have 14 day return. I have another 'yellowpad' from Best Buy that I'll hold onto and stretch out the 30 day return for a few weeks, all with the hopes that the LG panels show up in less than 30 days. All evidence points to this first batch being Samsung. LG is supposedly just now sending their panels to Apple. I'll hold out hope for the LG panels being better only because that's what my ipad 1 had and the colors/whites were perfect. If I see no evidence of better panels showing up before my 30 days is up, I'll just return it anyway and go without for a bit. It's just not worth getting stuck with a subpar panel for the next two years.

Just want to chime in that I went to the apple store and did a comparison of all the display units.

It looks to me like the LTE versions of the iPads have much better screen uniformity than the Wifi versions. I'd go so far as to say most of the LTE ones had no noticeable defects or discolorations anywhere on the screen, while most of the Wifi ones (if not all) had a yellowish tint at least in 1 corner of the screen, if not taking up a whole side of a screen.

My guess is they're using separate components from different manufacturers for the different iPad types because the factories that are producing the iPads are churning out both LTE and Wifi versions, not specializing in a single kind.

I also speculate most people saying they don't have a problem with their iPad either have the LTE version or they have horrible visual acuity and/or color blindness.

With that said, I've only gone to stores in the Manhattan region to see their units and from what I can tell most of whats on display and sold are from the "DLXH" factory with production week 1 or 2, which may skew the results I'm seeing from the national average (other factories, other production weeks).

Unfortunately, the 3 iPads that I had were all LTE and all had screen issues. I'm going to buy another one in a couple of months and re-evaluate.

People need to understand that dead pixels, backlight bleed, un-uniform, etc are common issues in LCD. Whether LCD TV or phone or iPad, they all inherits these LCD issues, more or less. If you are buying a LCD TV, go to AVS FORUM. There are a lot of complains about these same issues.

there are not much Apple, or even Samsung, can do to eliminate these issues.

Thanks! I'll do some searches and look around. I'm hoping this is something that might go away, but it's really doubtful.

It doesn't seem like this is something that will go away with time. It seems to a limitation with these displays. I think my iPad 2 does the same thing when viewed from extreme angles.

So to follow up. I inspected in store and did pixel tests and didn't see anything under the stores' lighting conditions. Plus the employee was hovering over me.

So I took it and will try it from home for a few days...I'm sure I'll find something, but at least it appears to be uniform in color?!

We shall see

Well after using it for the last few hours, I can say I haven't noticed any issues yet. I'm not seeing yellow tint, but if there is any, at least it is slightly warm uniformly all over rather than having multiple colors on the screen. there was a small imperfection that I noticed along the edge but it's hardly visible so I decided to take this one for now since the screen looked good.

Interesting note...the genius had the manager take care of my issue and I mentioned I had bought it online. He said okay I'll go grab you a new one and he gave me a complete one that was new in the box, still shrink wrapped rather than a brown box. Maybe it was because I brought everything with me to the store (box, cables, etc.) He said I want you to be happy so take it home and test it in your normal conditions and idiot you still have issues with this one, bring it in and we'll just swap it out again.

All in all, it was a good experience. I went to a different stand alone apple store than I usually go to (crowded mall).

I agree but I think it's the severity that is the issue with most. I have LCD TVs and yes there is uniformity and some bleed but what I have seen here and my own iPad 2 fiasco was way over what is to be expected.

First off, 'burn in' doesn't do a thing.

Second, exchanged my iPad today no problems. Apple store employees were very helpful, love doing business there. The new one looked good in the store, no yellowing!

However after getting home, noticed that the right side is DIM!!!! So depending on how much it bothers me I'll either try again next weekend or wait a few months until they get some refurbs, which have never disappointed me.

And if I only noticed it when viewing full screen colors I wouldn't care, but I notice it while just viewing web pages, and even photos.

First, there is the 'warmer' screen. I have found this one mostly to be on the black models. This screen has a more yellower hue to it than the old ipads. The degree to which the hue exists varies. But, what they all have, either in one corner, or one side, or two corners... is a darker tinted area. And on these 'yellower' ipads this darker discoloration area can take the form of a 'murky yellow', or a 'dark greyish' hue. It's usually pretty obvious where it is, but to locate it just pull up the keyboard and spin the unit around, passing through landscape mode into portrait, back into landscape, etc. You'll notice either the left or right side of the keyboard with a darker tone than the other.

Okay, second, there are panels with a 'cooler/reddish' tint all over. I have found these mostly on white models. These have a worse viewing angle than the 'yellower' ipads. Barely tilting the screen on these causes the screen to wash over in a red or greenish tint. And it's most obvious on white web pages. As with both panels, but this one especially, turning up the brightness is necessary to see through the tint, which starts to bother the eyes after not very long.

I think you have this one nailed. I started out with a black wifi 16gb unit from the preorder and got a yellow screen. I then returned it for a white wifi 16gb and got the pink tint. Did another swap and got a partial screen pink tint. I went back to black and got another yellow dud and dimmer screen on the left when held in portrait. So now I am back to my iPad2 and happy as ever.

As I read a lot, the tints were absolutely unacceptable whether yellow or pink. I found the pink ones even worse as they had a narrow viewing angle like you mentioned. It was almost as though it were a TN panel instead of an IPS panel. What a shame!

That is exactly what I'm seeing now on my new one after I exchanged the old one with the yellow tinted screen. Annoying.

That is common for pretty much all LCDs. Do the same test on your TV and you will see it is far worse.

I just thought about something about all of these people complaining about yellow screens. I remember the day I bought 6000k HID's for my car. I thought it would help me see at night. But the problem is the color is completely wrong for night time driving and you cannot see crap especially at twilight or in fog. A warmer screen is not only easier on the eyes but it looks more natural. I will never make that mistake again and I will have 4300k lights with 3500k fogs.

If I were not using f.lux right now I would be blinded by my computer screen. I also use it on my iPhone and iPod touch. So past 6PM I am looking at a 3400k screen which is far more yellow than what everyone here is complaining about.

It solves plenty. The large number of people here who don't know what they're talking about shouldn't be spouting off and stirring the pot.

From what I can tell since page 1 it didnt solve the problem for anyone, if you know what your talking about then educate the people properly instead of spouting that your technical knowledge is superior that others. If you do that then your actually solving a problem rather than adding fuel to the fire.

When you call something wrong or broken, you better have facts to back it up. When you're talking about colors and display performance, the topic is technicalities, no deflection necessary.
A lot of people have posted really yellow screens here which even affect how the UI elements, some are even showing pictures that half of their screens are yellow tinted, what facts do you want?

What the people here are talking about is their subjective preference, which is not the same thing.
Arent you also talking about the same thing? Subjectively you prefer warm colors hence anyone with a warm colored screen is actually just string the pot. This becomes a subjective thing for everyone because not even Apple can standardize what is supposed to be 'correct' or in your terms 'more accurate'.

Most people are extremely happy with their screens. Most of the people complaining here don't actually have anything wrong with their screens. Some of them obviously do, but nowhere near the lather you people are whipping up.

Sure, have you seen their screens? Do you have factual numbers to back it up ?

Whether people are happy or not is irrelevant to whether there's something wrong or broken. For the overwhelming majority, there just isn't.

You're trying to imply that just because the number of people with 'perfect' screens out number those who have issues, their issues are automatically discredited.

It's amazing to me that people insist on arguing such a basic point. Not liking something is not the same as it being broken. There are a fair number of off-color screens out there, as you'd expect when you ship a few million of anything. Those customers who are unhappy should exchange them or return them, sure. But the "I paid more than $15 for this it should be perfect lolz" and the "my whites aren't old lady hair blue IT'S DEFECTIVE" hue and cry is all BS.

Some are warmer or cooler than others, and some of those on both ends of the spectrum are outside the target range and should be replaced.

Taking bad photos in incandescent lighting and calling them defective is straight up nonsense.

That's demonstrably not the case.

You do have the concept of not all things are created equally but you also dont believe that people have genuine issues on their screens, which proves a point.

Lastly, a friend of mine just got the new 27" LED Mac display and the white point calibration out of the box is 6507K from Spyder4 Elite. His Ipad3 is more yellowish including the UI elements. We have the white point reading on the Ipad3 as well.

Why don't you just keep your slightly imperfect iPad 3 and then swap it in a few months?

Beats not having a Retina iPad at all, doesn't it?

Also a friend of mine today just got the new 27" LED mac display and a Spyder4 Pro.. White tone is at 6507K out of the box, his Ipad3 is also more yellow. Though we've gotten the reading on the Ipad3 but I doubt its relevant since you seem to say that the warmer color is intentional.

I measured the white colour temperature of my iPad 3 at 6553K. Compared to my monitor, it looks pink, but that's because my monitor's display is too cold.

Keep in mind that Apple may not be handing out brand new units. You may be getting a refurb if you choose to swap out as all these returns are heading back to Apple. I returned mine in hopes to repurchase a brand new one a month or 2 from now.

I'm getting a replacement sent out to me by Wednesday...But I am only doing this once. If the replacement is not considerably better, it is going back for a refund, and I will use my iPad 2 for a few months until reports of better screens are posted.

The good thing is, the replacement is arriving on Wednesday, and they are not picking up the old one until Thursday, so I will be able to compare the two side by side.

Yes, of course you might receive a refurb, but who cares? You are likely never going to know the difference, are you? Wouldn't you just be happy owning a near perfect iPad then?

And besides, what are you going to do if you purchase another iPad in 3 months only to find out that it also still has issues? Are you going to wait another 3 months for yet another batch to come out?

Or would you just leave it as it is then and just wait for the new iPad 4?

And if the cycle continues then, would you never use an iPad again?

Listen, my iPad has also a very uneven backlight, I am going to use it now for a month or so and then decide if it bothers me enough to swap. But I won't let this issue deter my enjoyment of the device, I use it every day and love it. I still have my old iPad 2 but can't stand doing anything but watch YouTube videos on it because of the inferior screen resolution. There's something to having looked at text displayed on the Retina Display that prohibits you from ever going back to a lower resolution tablet.

My MacBook Air is also pushing it due to its resolutions limits... It's slightly offset by the fact that I am sitting twice as far or so away from it than I do on my iPad... But still, Apple: We need Retina on MacBooks!

experiencing the same problem, perhaps.

Bought it in Hong Kong

4G 32GB Black AT&T (Week 8 Production)

still no way to exchange it since HK does not have the 4G models available yet :(

Really disturbing when surfing the net.

It looks dim and yellow
