New apple ad for the MacBook Air just dropped

Seriously, I just picked up a new Mac Air 2018 13 for work to replace a 2015 model, and just did an A/B test in photo booth. I do a lot of videos for work, so this is important. And the 'upgrade' is HORRIBLE. The second image - the clear one - is the 2015 one. This first grainy horrible one is the new one. Are they serious???View attachment 836280 View attachment 836281
I've just come back to how absolutely awful this camera quality is.
Our new reality. Apple’s desire to get every penny of profit from their hardware that they can get away with. Who knows how much even upgrade for next release of ‘the next big thing’
I guess if we want a really great web cam in a Mac, we have to buy a $5,000.00 iMac Pro.

I've had a lot of keyboard problems with the newer generation laptops, but never issues with the trackpads. I think they're the best in the industry. I'm much happier with the solid state trackpad.

If you're spending in excess of $1,500.00 for a laptop, you should not need an external web cam just to get a decent picture.

By the way, the camera on my 2017 iMac is also crap, so the issue isn't limited to laptops.

This. Even the MacBook Pro 2015 camera was meh. I have a 720 Logitech camera from 2009 I think that is better than that. Yes I understand its smaller and inside the display, but come on, 2019 and still no 1080p?

I can go with meh camera just fine. My MacBook Air 2013 had an okay camera, I never complained. MacBook Air 2018 on the other hand has a camera that makes everything look like blurry crap.

Really great web cam? You mean not awful?
Average to above average?

Does anyone have experience with the iMac Pro webca.....er...."FaceTime" camera? Is it on par with iOS devices?

The iMac Pro *supposedly* has a really solid camera. The cost of porting that to the other iMacs and even the laptops should be minimal.

Hell, give us an iPhone 6 FaceTime camera---I'm sure that's better quality device than the turn sitting inside the MacBook Pro 2018 I'm typing this on.

I’m pretty sure even iPhone 3G had a better quality camera

720p IS HD though..
The problem is that the old MacBooks had 720p cameras as well, yet the quality of the new ones has dropped dramatically. Resolution is just one factor of image quality. Plus, I don’t really believe these cameras are real 720p cams.

Well, you are using it wrong !

Buy iphone holder extention and mount it to your mac.

Now you have better camera...

(Please note: Iphone sold separately) :p

Also be pretty niffty way for hands-free calling. Kill two birds with one stone :)

I've just received a confirmation from Apple that they know about the quality difference between new and old Airs and "this is correct behavior of the device".
They recommended sending more feedback through https://www.apple.com/feedback/, but I guess it will stay "You're holding it wrong" (tm) unless someone will file a lawsuit.

Here's a MacBook Air 2018 on the left and a MacBook Air 2015 on the right. 1 light source is right in front of me and 1 is behind.

I had several attempts on the 2018 MacBook each time returning them to Apple, on the last one I received a full refund.

Do you or others have any information or reviews about the 2019 MacBook Air FaceTime camera?

Unless Apple quietly updated, which I doubt. Apple isn't getting push back from average consumers so no reason at this point. Redesigned with maximum profit in mind.

Did you get that in writing? As those Apple cheaters that I spoke on the phone wouldn't want to put anything in writing.

I would be very susprised if they changed anything about it. It’s a pity there is so little media coverage of these ridiculous cameras.

Sorry but it was 'kshnurov said:' "I've just received a confirmation from Apple......" best ask him/her, not me. I simply asked in broad terms has the 2019 MacBook FaceTime camera improved? After returning several 2018 MacBook Air's.

And here we are at the end of the year, a brand new 16" £2000+ Macbook and still a 720p webcam.

I've read and listened to many reviews of this new amazing laptop and they all mention the poor webcam.
100% genuinely I would LOVE to speak to those at Apple responsible for this to get a understanding of why.

It can't be cost, $2000+ machine, and what would the part cost different be between a 720p and 1080p webcam module be? Let s take a guess at $5

It can't be power needed to handle the data. the machine is super powerful.

It can't be battery, as the difference would be a non issue given the batter size.

Physical size? ust how much larger physically is a 720p over a 1080p camera module?

This type of thing really makes me curios and seems to happen a LOT.
You have a machine, amazing in all areas and you deliberately design a poor/weak point that get's picked up on pretty much every single review.

And given poor webcam has been criticized on cheaper lower power machines in the past, you can't as a company say we never thought about it.

Which means it's a deliberate choice to fit a poor quality, in relation to the rest of an otherwise amazing machine.

I would love to know officially why.

I said it before, but I will repeat. I don't mind the cam being 720p. It's low res, but well. But hell, let it be 720p! That so called 720p by Apple is like 320p at most.

this is how market works, everybody expects GPU and CPU better every year or two,but easy specs are hold always to make new products look better, wifi 6, 1080 camera, 120mhz screen, face id...
if you get all this now, it would be 3-4 years without any improvement beyond CPU/GPU until thunderbolt 4 come up
Half an hour more battery doesnt say too much...

This is how the market works NOW. It wasn't like that for many years. Did we all forget the times when Apple surprised and amazed us every year? Now it's just empty words, fake improvements, which sometimes happen to be downgrades in reality. 16" MacBook Pro is the first one in years that has something to say.

Tim has to spitefully cut something to feel he's earning his bonus

It was the easiest part of the new design for him to understand and draw a red line through

What kinds of things do you guys use the webcam for other than video calls? I remember back in late 2005 after the iMac got a webcam that people were saying they would take a low quality webcam over none at all. Back then the networks were so bad that you couldn't even keep up with the HD video with a lot going on.

Not to justify the quality, it's stupid that it was downgraded. At least keep the old spec.
