Maybe he came on a little too strong but I applaud him for doing his job. They don't work on commission, it's by hourly wage. What they're trained to do is to offer product/accessories as a whole solution. Believe it or not, there are quite a few people who go out and buy a computer from wherever only to forget that they're missing a cable or printer. The Specialist at Apple are trained to eliminate that mistake and aren't "pressuring" you, they're just offering a "full solution". In your case, you felt that he was trying to throw something on you but he didn't position himself properly.

As for the different panel, that's a toss up, serious technical person might know that, but to Specialist/Geniuses, it's an LCD display and that's it. Expecting them to know that is like them needing to know what's the code name of the processors are being used, all they know it as is xGHz Core 2 Duo and that's it.

Well, this is a probably good for another topic, but I want employees to be spending energy making sure the product I am getting will suit my needs, not making sure I have $35 cables that SHOULD be included in a $3200 machine anyway.

If Mapple was concerned with a "full solution" I wouldn't have to go to the store to get a dock for my iPhone, or a DVI cable for my MBP. I wouldn't have to spend extra money on a power cable when I buy the dock, and I wouldn't have to spend extra money on a Matte display.

The question remains however...why do I know more than a "genius?" I have only owned one Mapple product in my life, and I walk into a store knowing more than he does, I already have the cables I need.....and so on...

Assess my knowledge and adjust accordingly...this guy didn't get that.

That's what I'm trying to say. He didn't position himself accordingly before asking those questions. He should've asked you a few questions rather then jumping into selling you MobileMe, or some cables etc.

As for your argument as to why Apple doesn't just those accessories, bottom line is just to save money. But it isn't just Apple. Printers don't come with US B cables anymore.

Sure, we would hope and would like the Geniuses to know basically everything but sometimes there's that one thing it it'll happen. But for the most part, they do their job pretty damn well IMO.

I'm not trying to argue you or say the Apple Genius is more smarter than you. Apple has this model or guideline to follow which makes them the most successful retailer per sq. feet or whatever. That person you talked to didn't and is probably why you felt the way you did. If I walked in not knowing nothing about computers and that same person approached me, if he positioned himself right, I would feel very comfortable in what Apple is trying to sell me and or help me.

High end ones do... and we have to assume that these are high end computers.

When I ordered my Dell 4 years ago on the phone, those guys threw in a bunch for free. I ended up getting a printer for free, and a bunch of money off. When I ordered my 24" monitor and the first two had dead pixels, they said sorry and took $150 off the cost for my troubles.

Those cables probably cost Mapple next to nothing to make, throwing them in for free would not only make it a total solution, but would simply put the company at the top...but if you read around the internets you'll notice many, many people feel Mapple is considered pretty stingy.

Just curious, but why do you continue to refer to Apple as Mapple? I know it's a Simpsons reference, but you're carrying it pretty far o_O

My new policy....After my continuing experience with the company, I will continue to make the reference until I deem it to hold no water. Call it a bit of a personal rebellion/statement on my part.

My friend and I were in the Mapple store last week and we were joking that if you asked a question that was negative then two guys in suits would come out and escort you into the back, tape you to a chair and beat you until you accepted Steve Mobs as your savior.

I'll get slammed for this, but there are many aspects of the community I don't like. I just want a computer that works for me, I don't want to get high fives on the street because I have a little glowing fruit on my computer. When I got my iPhone at Costco, some employee ran up to me and said, "Woah, iPhone!! You're gonna love it!!"

All I was thinking was, "Dude...I don't know you, get away from me, it's a phone!"

So ya, Mapple is my way of making a small statement about many of the dislikes I have for the company. We will see if my MBP changes my mind, but so far, I'm not impressed.

Something tells me that you kind of do want "hi fives" for all that you do.
In your case, thanks for the information and way to stick it to the man.

Oh my God, ENOUGH! Enough with the "Hey! Look at me! I'm so clever!" pop culture references. Yes. Mapple. I get it. It was a Simpsons episode. I know. I saw it. It WAS funny. WAS. Now that you beat it into the ground, dug it up, beat it into the ground again, dug it back up, stomped on it, twice, threw it into the air and shot it with a shotgun, brushed the pieces to the side of the road and blew them up with an IED, only to reassemble the pieces and beat it into the ground one more time, not really funny anymore. No need to use it in damn near every single post in every single thread. Kinda old. Here's my pop culture reference. "Oh, I get it. Very clever. How's that working out for you?" Promise I'll only use mine once.

I see you've got your first MyBill ;D

*refference back to Simpsons for those that didn't see that episode*

My apologies. My rant is directed at the OP and his extreme overuse of the reference, not your single reference.

hehe... no worries ;-) I can understand the OP though. Apple pisses me off soooooo much. But it's still better than anything else out there...

Why don't you love me...I did all that background work for you!!

What I enjoy so much is how everyone gets their panties in a bunch over it. Seriously, don't drink the kool-aid!

What were you saying about beating it into the ground?

How do you expect anyone to take your post seriously if you call them Mapple?

Do you expect anyone to take you seriously by not? Ya, think about that for a while! :)

I see you've got your first MyBill ;D

Ha...indeed!

...And we all know the Simpsons are still totally relevant. Totally.

Hey... also... I don't get the Mapple thing. Is there a pun I'm missing or is it really clever to just insert a different letter in the beginning of a product name?

You're not missing anything, it's clever. Why is it clever you ask, because people seem to take offense to it...it's like calling your mom fat, or telling someone you slept with his sister......

I dunno, some people are just loyal to a computer manufacturer I guess...

If you're going to be annoying, at least be witty about it. Trust me, I made plenty of people on this board mad, I've got experience in this area. Been banned three times. It was funny in the first post. Now you're just being stupid.

I honestly don't like being sold all the accessories either. I just tell them "I'll buy it when I need it." and they leave me alone. You don't need to keep posting about a salesman being a salesman. You had a bad experience, we got it. There was one moron at an Apple store. You found Waldo, congrats. Move on with your life.

Take a gander at this post.... I posted information that I learned at the store, and people chose to defend Mapple to the last breath instead of talking about the information I posted.

What this says to me is, there are people on this forum that are more concerned with keeping the squeaky clean image instead of dealing with the issues.

There were like two posts that dealt with what I posted...the rest simply wanted to argue. You think I'm trying to win some kind of comedy award here...sorry, but you're mistaken.

If people want to continue arguing bout my use of Mapple and how I didn't like the service, then that's cool....we'll do that, or we could talk about what matters, like our computers...up to you folks.

I believe you're the one who posted something completely irrelevant to "our computers."

I'm not arguing about how you didn't like their service. I could care less if you don't like their service. I often don't like their service. I just think you're a tool, and apparently most of the rest of this thread agrees.

and the reason you think this this? Cause I don't follow this company like a cult?

You did have relevant information, but it was kind of buried in your rant about the second genius bothering you.

Interesting stuff.

Why do you expect a sales man to know something as technical as the panel number?

And why do you keep referring to him as "genius" when its already been pointed out that they are the ones that fix the computers (one of them might happen to know the panel number offhand)?
