I'm not even going to quote you... you're way too defensive and over the top. I don't care if you criticize Apple. I'm not defending them, they don't need it. What I'm expressing is how "baiting" your sweeping generalizations about Apple, the stores, and its customers is on a forum like this.

What IS the point of your thread? Can you honestly say you weren't looking for a reaction, based on your overall tone? Please, re-read your own posts. There are way too many examples of you tossing gasoline on the sparks here for you to cry "foul." I'm not going to get into a million quote pasting contest with you, but suffice to say, you were way too ready to label and insult anyone who disagreed with you.

As the old saying goes..." you know it when you see it."

Seriously son, if you can't understand the point of this post by page 4, then I can't help you. If you STILL can't get the point of this post even after I told you what it was, well....I dunno....maybe I can put it more simple....let me know if this helps.

point: to infor...(wait...I'll use small words)

Point: to tell anyone here that cares what information I found during my trip to the store, and to pass along my experience so that others might enjoy the story or relate to it in some way.

Is that clear?

Here is what happened however...

In the first 4 posts or so, people focused on something so they could use it as an excuse to turn this into a 4 page bitch fest. They decided that was more fun to defend something so rediculous instead of talking about the information, which was (to remind you all).

I then talked to another employee about the display being dimmer and his response was, "Ya, when they first came in they were pretty dark. I'm not sure why, but the "marketing guys" came in and calibrated it or something and now it's the same...so they must have some strange out of the box setting."

I also asked him about the policy on dead pixels and he said it was covered, to just bring it back in.

I asked him what happened in the event my MBP isn't working, but it's simply a part that needs replacing (logic board, HD, monitor). He said that I could take my notebook home while they order the part, and then bring it in to get it replaced so I wouldn't be without a computer for days.

I asked him about the (9c98 or 9c99) monitors and he had no idea what I was talking about, or how to find out.

I asked him if he had heard of any of the graphical issues people have been talking about and he said he hadn't heard a thing.

So how can this help?

Well for those who were intelligent enough to focus on that and not a distortion of the precious Mapple name....they would have gathered that perhaps

1. There is simply a setting that needed to be tweaked to get full brightness and this wasn't such a huge issue.

2. Dead pixels aren't a big deal and they'll take them back if you want.

3. Returning your computer doesn't mean you have to be without it for weeks as it's being repaired, which is good news for people who use it for work and not just dicking around in iLife.

4. He didn't know about the screen differences or graphical issues....so maybe it's not as widespread as it seems.

But of course, lets focus on "Mapple" because until we make sure we respect the mighty fruit we can't get down to what matters.

"Mapple" was cute the first few dozen times. Now it's just annoying. Maybe that's one reason you're catching hell.

You should probably also avoid taking a condescending stance with stuff like "wait...I'll use small words" while misspelling words like "rediculous" [sic].

Your original point is taken, and I'm sorry folks here were so ready to jump you when you were obviously just trying to help---but I imagine their reaction is more to your tone than the content of your post.

Wait, Dell has great customer service?

Unless they have DRASTICALLY redone their call centers, I cannot say that is the case.

I had to spend 2 hours THREE seperate times in a week, just to get a replacement battery.

Did I rant about it? No, I just decided if I were to ever buy from Dell again I would go elsewhere to have it serviced.

Edit: This was 2004 or 2005, so its possible that they have done alot of work since then.

The only reason that this thread is 4 pages long is because you continue to reply to every off-topic post that you're now complaining about.

Only you have the power to end this "bitch fest".

And if you really wanted to live up to your "POINT" of this thread (Point: to tell anyone here that cares what information I found during my trip to the store, and to pass along my experience so that others might enjoy the story or relate to it in some way), you'd have a moderator delete the last half of your original post (as it doesn't apply to your point), and every off-topic reply thereafter.

Observe Mapple fans...

Hmm, I ordered my first XPS around that time as well. That sucks that you got bad service though. The last time I ordered from Dell was in 2007, but perhaps I just got "lucky".

If you had bad experience though then it's good to know. See, now I would like to hear your rant because as a customer I appreciate knowing the problems as well as the praise of a company so I am better informed as a consumer.

If you want to call them names in your rant, go ahead, I won't be insulted...Dell isn't putting my kids through school, so I have no reason to defend them...hell you could even say your Dell was the worst computer in the world and you wish the company would go bankrupt. My response would still be, "Well that sucks you had that experience, I haven't, but that's not to say that it doesn't happen...I'll take that into consideration for next time."

"Mapple" was cute the first few dozen times. Now it's just annoying. Maybe that's one reason you're catching hell.

No, the reason I'm catching hell is because even though it means nothing (and shouldn't be deserving of anything past a "whatever") there are people that genuinely find it insulting that someone would dare call it Mapple. The reason I believe is that some people can't disassociate the company from themselves. They believe that insulting the company is insulting them, because as Mapple users, they see themselves as "stakeholders".

As I said in another post. People don't get upset when you change McDonalds, or Wal-Mart. They don't fly off the handle if you use a play on words for companies like "Telus" or whatever...and the reason is that those companies don't instill a "cult" mentality in it's users.

So you like Mapple computers and you have had good experience with the company...is that REALLY grounds for getting all up in arms if someone doesn't think so? Do you REALLY have to turn it into one of your "Mac vs. PC", or "Switch" commercials? Does it really effect your life that much when someone distorts the name.

Seriously, I really think some of you need to take a step back into reality...they are COMPUTERS people. I'm not insulting your child or mother here.

You know, you make an excellent point. The question really is, why have the mods allowed people to post off topic comments since the first page? Why has no mods come along and said, "While some might not agree with the OP calling it Mapple, the post is as legit as any one of the other ones around here, and so all posts not relating to the point of the thread will be deleted"

But, that didn't happen...and so again, instead of people discussing the point, people like you come along and post yet another off topic post about why it's off topic, and then blaming me for the reason it's off topic....hmmm.

Why not, instead of trying to give your take on the conversation, you attempt to pull it back into context. Maybe that would have a slightly better result.

Oh... I think I pretty well do know the point of your post, and your subsequent insulting style... to wit:

point: to infor...(wait...I'll use small words)

Point: to tell anyone here that cares what information I found during my trip to the store, and to pass along my experience so that others might enjoy the story or relate to it in some way.

Is that clear?

If only that were true.

Here is what happened however...

In the first 4 posts or so, people focused on something so they could use it as an excuse to turn this into a 4 page bitch fest. They decided that was more fun to defend something so rediculous instead of talking about the information, which was (to remind you all).

But of course, lets focus on "Mapple" because until we make sure we respect the mighty fruit we can't get down to what matters.

Clearly...you wanted to make a point with "Mapple." It just took a little probing from the audience to get you to unleash your inner hatred. You'd have us believe that something as silly as that was actually meant in harmless fun, but it wasn't... was it. It was the bait. Now you can blame all others for being biased, worshippers and otherwise non-credible, right? In some ways, it was clever, but a bit too obvious. Do you seriously think most of us give a crap what you call Apple? Please, don't flatter yourself that much. But when you extend your flame-baiting to include most of us who are in the Apple community, you lose your own cred.

Wow...again...it's like you just sit around fabricating your version of the story so you make sure it fits your bias.

And... you're not biased?

Seriously, read your post over and tell me if you can pick out all the times in which you chose to skip details or add them to make your point. Perhaps you might notice where you assumed I was in a "bad mood" or how I called over a "genius" just so I could start a squabble.

I didn't say you tried to start a squabble at the Apple store. I did say you appear to be baiting folks on this forum into a response... and it worked. Good for you! Some examples:

My new policy....After my continuing experience with the company, I will continue to make the reference until I deem it to hold no water. Call it a bit of a personal rebellion/statement on my part.

My friend and I were in the Mapple store last week and we were joking that if you asked a question that was negative then two guys in suits would come out and escort you into the back, tape you to a chair and beat you until you accepted Steve Mobs as your savior.

I'll get slammed for this, but there are many aspects of the community I don't like. I just want a computer that works for me, I don't want to get high fives on the street because I have a little glowing fruit on my computer. When I got my iPhone at Costco, some employee ran up to me and said, "Woah, iPhone!! You're gonna love it!!"

All I was thinking was, "Dude...I don't know you, get away from me, it's a phone!"

So ya, Mapple is my way of making a small statement about many of the dislikes I have for the company. We will see if my MBP changes my mind, but so far, I'm not impressed.

You are basically a grumpy person... sheesh!

What I enjoy so much is how everyone gets their panties in a bunch over it. Seriously, don't drink the kool-aid!

...referring to your "clever" use of Mapple.

You're not missing anything, it's clever. Why is it clever you ask, because people seem to take offense to it...it's like calling your mom fat, or telling someone you slept with his sister......

There you go... that's more like it. Insult folks to get a reaction... very clever. See... you admit it yourself. Nice one.

I dunno, some people are just loyal to a computer manufacturer I guess...

Hey...it ain't a crime, and why should it bother you?

Perhaps what we might want to do, is actually think about this realistically....use Occam's Razor if you will to determine what might have actually happened instead of you coming up with some ridiculously distorted version to suit your needs.

Somehow I don't think I was that far off. I'd hate to deal with you if I was an employee at an Apple store... you're one of those who basically has his mind made up beforehand, and everything that happens then is seen to support that assumption.

1. I walked into the store 15 minutes early on a Tuesday morning.
2. I decided to check out the computer I had ordered online since it was the first time I have had the opportunity to do so.
3. I was approached by an over zealous sales person who decided to not only try and sell me something, but insisted on bombarding me for 15 minutes about how this computer would eliminate all my Vista problems (which he assumed I had...but I don't).

When I explained I wasn't interested, he continued with, "Well, I hear you're in here for in iPhone, have you heard of Mobile Me?" This continued until they were shouting my name at the back of the store. I said, "Thanks for your help, but I have to get to my appointment." yet, he continued following me up to the counter all the while talking about the advantage of Mobile Me.

4. I talked to the "genius" at the back about my iPhone, but instead of being open and honest about things, I was forced to dance this little dance to get information out of him. I realized in the first 2 minutes or so that this was not a conversation about my phone, but a game of cat and mouse we had to play so I could get answers.

You can understand how this might have been a little frustrating as I had just drove 2 hours to get answers and now I was sitting there getting these "beat around the bush" answers that were so obvious that it was insulting.

5. After my appointment, I decided to sit down and play with the 17" again...perhaps this time I would be able to do so without being disturbed. Another employee came up and said, "I see you're looking at the "about this MAC"....any reason?"

I was a little taken back, but he seemed nice and so I continued to ask him questions regarding pixels, problems, etc. He was nice, but not very helpful and so I eventually just left.

Was that so hard? I highly doubt telling the story like that would have generated negative responses. Probably not even a passing thought.

But, you had to have your anti-Apple moment... here on an Apple-oriented forum. What the hell did you expect?

Why is this so hard to understand? Why do you insist I put on my "Bill Gates Rocks!" t-shirt and went into the Mapple store with the intent to piss everyone off and make some employee feel like a jerk? Was I in a "bad mood" because of my phone...not at all....frustrated maybe, but not in a bad mood.

I never once said you did anything of the sort. For all I know you didn't get into any kind of dispute at the store, and actually it wasn't all that bad. It's the way you came here to then bring out your anti-Apple baiting. It's always easier to be insulting when you don't have to look someone in the eye.

What this says to me is, there are people on this forum that are more concerned with keeping the squeaky clean image instead of dealing with the issues.

There were like two posts that dealt with what I posted...the rest simply wanted to argue.

Again... a bit of exaggeration. Several people asked why you were using the term Mapple, and some related their own experiences, which differed from yours... so what? Are you the only one with experiences dealing with Apple?

You think I'm trying to win some kind of comedy award here...sorry, but you're mistaken.

If people want to continue arguing bout my use of Mapple and how I didn't like the service, then that's cool....we'll do that, or we could talk about what matters, like our computers...up to you folks.

If you wanted to truly discuss things that mattered, you wouldn't have maintained your insistence on using a term that clearly sidetracked people from your issues... call it a hunch, but when you start labeling people and using derisive terms, it stirs up emotions. But, clearly you understand this, and you did it anyway. You put the chip up there on your shoulder, and finally someone knocked it off. What did you expect, seriously? Some folks got it, and they expressed it. Somehow, it set you off. I suspect (as I said, it's only my opinion...) that's what you intended in the first place.

You did have relevant information, but it was kind of buried in your rant about the second genius bothering you.

Interesting stuff.

Agreed

See, but what you fail to see is that I don't care. I'm buying a computer not a group of friends.

I posted my findings based on my experience at the store, and people decided to focus on that. If you read back, I tried to get it back on topic, but people simply wanted to focus on defending Mapple and so, after realizing that this post was ruined I simply continued.

As I said... further backs up why I think you started this thread.

I'm sure many of you just think I'm here to troll or whatever...

if it's that clear to you, maybe there's something to it...

...but all I was attempting to do was share what I was seeing. The funny thing is however is that in typical fanboy ways, many of you resorted to the most cliche response you could.

Until post 34-35, most folks were pretty darn polite, if a bit befuddled by your issue (your Apple Store experience) being all that big a deal. Nonetheless, I didn't pick up on any hostility until quite a ways into the thread. After you had already laid the groundwork. Once someone gave you the excuse to go after all the rest of us "cult" members, you jumped on it.

Maybe that saying is true....the worst thing about Mapple is the users.

Too bad you're so defensive. Case closed.

Honestly, I'm not going to reply to that drivel. There has to be some rule on here about massive quoting like that, regardless...Honestly sir, you're so out to lunch I can't even be bothered. Lets just chalk it up to a win for you so we can get past it because I really don't have the care to pick apart every sentence in your reply.

I really don't have the time or the energy to educate you on how many obvious logical fallacies you use in your replies, but I really don't think it would matter if I did.

Lets just assume you're right. Good work, you found me out, I'm so embarrassed. Lets call it "Cased Closed" as you said...congrats on the lawyer work Atticus Finch.

maaaan call centers are not real. No company has some dedicated specialist that works in a call center. No company weather its apple dell your cable company or whatever its all the same. its just a group of people in a small office who couldent get a better job with a sheet of paper that tells them what they can do in certin situations. You either get lucky and get a happy person or unlu ky and get a mean person thats all customer service is

Hey, to get this thread back on topic, I'm a bit confused about the 17" being dimmer because of an out of the box setting. I thought it was just physically dimmer than the 15"? Or did something happen and I just missed it?

Hey, to get this thread back on topic, I'm a bit confused about the 17" being dimmer because of an out of the box setting. I thought it was just physically dimmer than the 15"? Or did something happen and I just missed it?

(thanks)

This confused me as well. When the employee said that people came in and fixed it it made me wonder if it's just some factory setting that they put on there to attempt better battery numbers off the start.

I have read a bit and it seems that a fresh install of the OS seems to fix it, but I haven't been able to test (as my MBP went from Alaska to Kentucky for reasons only known to UPS).

I have also seen photos (and the 17" was beside a 15" in the store) and they looked the same to me. I have no previous experience with these computers so my untrained eye couldn't see the difference.

I plan on reinstalling the OS from scratch when I get mine, so I'll be sure to post the results.

Am I the only one who is really, really annoyed by the whole "Mapple" thing? I want to slap the OP, and I'm not even sure why...

no, im with you...its sort of like that kid in your class who would put words together...like napoleon dynamites liger(mix of a tiger and lion).

he was funny for a little bit...than he got very annoying....

I agree too, it's like when people keep posting replies about how annoying something is....don't you just hate that? Oh I know, I do too!!

We should slap him, slap him silly...Mapple...pffft...what is this..grade 2? He must be 17, or he must be slightly retarded...there must be a reason, why would you come on to a forum like this and purposely misspell something...that's just asking for trouble.

I know I for one am going to make sure I spell the name uber correctly for the next little while just to offset this.....sigh, some people's kids huh?

he says as he stares in the mirror...

Bwhahaahahahhahahahhah really? I mean REALLY?? That's the joke you came up with?

A mirror joke...really?

Why not go all the way and bust out the, "I'm rubber and you're glue!" or the "I know you are but what am I?"

Well, at least we know that if your Mapple ever fails and you can't spend your time making iLife movies about your pet weasel you can take your comedy act on the road. I know I'll buy tickets because nothing would make me laugh more than seeing, "Flint, he couldn't start a comedy fire if he used his own gas!"

Oh, was this topic about dim screens?

There actually is a thread on the subject of 17" MBP dim screens. Seems the in-store models are all imaged from a common OSX image used on 15" as well, which has vary a bit from the factory installed OS and the included restore disks (different preference settings/energy management utility settings.) From what I gathered on a quick read, if you take a demo model that had the dimming issue, and were to do a clean re-install, it would fix it.

So, any out-of-the-box new laptop should not have this problem, since it's already got the correct installation.

You just keep digging, don't you.. and the hole just gets deeper and deeper. What did I do? Touch a nerve?

Do you really want to keep doing this? Feel better now? There, there... it's going to be alright, kid.

PS: Quit spying on me and my pet weasel.

What did I do? Touch a nerve?

Better my nerve than what you usually try.

Once again, you astound me with your amazing knack with the comebacks. I can see you now...

"Honey, Honey....he said something again, what should I say?"
"Hahaha awesome, thanks, I'll put that!"
"lets see.....quic..*backspace* quit spying on my pet wiene....*backspace* weasel....hahah gold!!"

"Honey, I typed it....watch...watch...it's gonna be awesome!"
