I know it's sounds cliche by now, but it really does need a "killer app" for mass adoption - and I don't think we've seen it yet. My in-store demo experience was neat and had a few 'wow' moments, but none of the apps left me feeling like I need an AVP at all. And absolutely not at this price point.

Yep - Very much how a large majority of folks feel after demoing basically any/all VR headsets to this point

There's always a wow that tapers off and one is left wondering what they would actually use it for / if they should return it / it sits on a shelf, etc

Those feelings are likely quite amplified with the really high price of AVP here.

Reminds me of the early days of the Apple Watch, lots of gimmicks...

Didn't stop me from buying an AW and won't stop me from buying an AVP lol
That didn't go well for the Apple Watch... it went on to have almost no useful third party apps, and a lot of the ones that were useful were subsequently dropped because they had too little adoption to make ongoing support/maintenance worthwhile.

Every App Store from Apple has been an utter failure except for the original iPhone App Store. Developers were excited for the potential, and then after experiencing working with Apple decided to never do it again.

I never thought of it that way, but you’re right. I remember when the Apple Watch came out, there was that space story game that was always talked about. Apparently people don’t want to game on their wrists and it seems like games are never marketed now for the Watch 😂

I like browsing the App Store when I’m bored, and it’s only ever the iOS/iPadOS stores that have anything of substance.

Watch, TV, and to a certain degree, Mac, all have very poor selections.

Correct

One would hope that Apple would eventually internalize some lessons here and finally ralize that "they are the problem, not everyone else"

This hints at why some of us really are ready for some leadership change.

It doesn't seem to matter what happens or what failures or underwhelming product releases occur, the current Apple regime just continues to plod down the same general paths.

All they seem to know how to do (or be willing to do) is squeeze juice from the existing fruits

It's been an amazing run, but it really feels like a little bit of a shakeup and some fresh ideas are warranted

thinking about AVP in the long-term (decades), launching this absolute beast of a $3500 device in 2024 may have been one of Tim’s greatest chess moves in the world of computing.

do I think everyone is gonna own an XR headset (or “spatial computer” if they somehow manage to get that to catch on) 30 years from now? no, but I do think it will pick up a decent market segment. Apple decided to get in on the ground floor (yes, these kinds of devices have existed for over ten years…and mostly have been the subject of memes) and just go as all-out as they could, with the focus on getting the price (and bulk of the damn device) down coming later.

why do I say all of this on a post about vOS app store being visible online? because I think that’s part of the master plan. show people who are eyeballing this hell of an investment what their options are for third-party content, given they can’t just go into a store and try the apps…give it a year or two and I’d bet money there’s gonna be incredibly innovative AR apps in the store.

either that or I’ve been misted by Tim. you decide! 🤠

Neither the Apple Watch nor the Apple TV need a huge selection of apps. What Apple provides out of the box for the Apple Watch is good enough to justify the purchase.

The Apple TV is quite cheap affordable, and it gets the same streaming apps as every other TV accessory, so it's good enough.

But on the Mac and Vision Pro, for such a high price tag, it's going to have to be an expansive app selection. The Mac gets around its extremely poor App Store by permitting installs to come from anywhere. Vision Pro is going to fail because its App Store will fail. Maybe the EU will force Apple to open up the Vision Pro to non-app-store-apps, and ironically it'll do much better there, finally making Apple realize that their App Stores are a massive deterrent to buying Apple devices, not something that helps them.

To be clear - Apple could have a tremendous amount of success with the App Store model. But it'd require Apple to actually listen to and cooperate with... anyone? Customers? Developers? Regulators? Maybe just firing Phil Schiller and/or Tim Cook would finally fix it. Seems like Steve Jobs was constantly listening to devs and customers and revising the rules to better appeal to everyone. Then he died and the rules have primarily gotten worse over time.

The Apple TV is quite cheap

It is?
In the context of all the other streaming sticks and dongles and boxes (or just using TV apps)?

Are you sure?

I love my ATVs but I find them to be grossly overpriced and buy mine all preowned these days
(They devalue like a rock dropping in a lake, so it's at least easy to score deals)

Agree. I have three ATVs and they’re over priced for what they are. It’s only getting worse as Apple destroys tvOS in their attempt to force Apple content down all our necks. There’s a growing argument that the AppleTV is actually worse than most other streaming content devices due to the awful interface, abundant bugs and removal of features people use.

And to the other member’s point regarding available software for the device, it’s basically an iPhone. It could have all sorts of interesting apps. But the developers aren’t there for it and Apple doesn’t seem to care at all. That’s the issue.

This is a big concern of mine and I wonder if I'll end up moving on from ATVs when it comes time to choose something new in the future

The more it turns into just another vessel for Apple "services", the less interested I am

The more they stuff in the tv app the less I use it. It’s garbage. I only use third party apps.
