The other cool thought I had is if you happen to be flying and chose to pay to have your, say iPad on the in flight wireless you will be able to continue texting people on the ground which is a HUGE advantage over the system now, especially if text messaging is a significant portion of how you conduct business.

I've just tried it and it just says "Waiting for Delivery..." for a long time. While I obviously know that the recipient hasn't got the message, the message is more likely to get there with SMS.

EDIT: After 5 minutes it sent it as an SMS which got delivered immediately. That's not too bad, but I'd still like the option - see my last point below.

I'm looking forward to it but that's disappointing. Often when I SMS it is for immediate delivery/response.

iMessage can be turned off.

Yay! Now if I could enable/disable per contact.

You guys know that the SMS standard allows for delivery reports, right? I was using them on a crappy Nokia back in the mid 90s. It's an iPhone peculiarity that it doesn't support them, most other phones do.

I'm too lazy to Google right now but it is also up to the carrier to provide that service. Just like with ActiveSync, any given phone doesn't have to be 100% compliant. IIRC AT&T does offer that service on a premium plan.

I just read through this whole thread and didn't find my answer...

For those of you familiar with BBM groups, is iMessage group chat similar to that? Will we be able to just pick a group of people and create a group, title the group, and just chat back and forth with everyone easily seeing every message? That was one of the things I loved about the BB, being in a group with 8 friends and just seeing what everyone was up to with everyone able to reply.

So far no groups in iMessage. So you will have to keep conversations or choose your recipients every time.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but is 'Send Read Receipt' automatically set to off when you update to iOS5 so you have to manually turn it on, or is it set to on and you have to manually turn it off if you don't want people to get them.

I ask this as it is one of my favourite features of Whatsapp and think that the experience is ruined if you can see that it has been delivered but can't see if it has been read.

Yes. Default is off. So unless you turn it on you only get delivery receipts

Even worse is you get no read receipt from others unless they turn it on in their settings.

you get a delivery receipt tho, that's always on. i like that read receipt is off by default as i'd rather decide myself if i want to let people know i read it. it's a privacy thing. if you look in email programs, read receipts are off by default, and if you request one, the person receiving it has to choose to allow it. so there's a standard there.

Carrier supports it for sure. I am getting delivery reports on my Nokia phones.

And i am getting delivery reports if i use the iPhoneDelivery app as well.

But until now the generic SMS app and BiteSMS didnt allow delivery reports unless the above app was installed.

So i want to know if i can get delivery without any additional apps.

So if my iMessage is off and my friend only uses iMessage, will they be able to send an iMessage and have me receive it as a normal SMS?

no

if you're not online in skype, your friend can't send you a skype message either. ;)

it's INTEGRATED into the messages app, yet it's a dedicated protocol.

That's not entirely true. If your friend sends you an iMessage & you have your iMessage turned off, then it will automatically send the message as an SMS - all in the background.

well, then he didn't _really_ send you an iMessage, did he? :/

it will still count as an SMS for him, that's what i meant to say

As a 10+ year Blackberry user (hold off on the insults for a moment), I was elated when I saw the announcement about iMessage.

As most of you are aware, Blackberry has BBM (Blackberry Messenger) which is very similar to iMessage. If I have the option, I use BBM 100% of the time over text messages, and yes I do have an unlimited SMS plan. The benefits have been mentioned numerous times.

So, what does this mean to me? The iPhone 5 will be replacing my Blackberry. I am joining the :apple: club. Honestly, I was leaning that way anyway as I have an iMac, iPad2 and iPod Touch, but iMessage sealed the deal.

Good deal! That will be good because you can setup it up (if you want) to send & receive iMessages on your iPad too. So if you're on your iPad & someone sends an iMessage to your iPhone, it will also to go to your iPad - and you can respond from there, without having to take out your iPhone.

That is, if you want to setup it up like that.

Yep, that is my plan. This whole iCloud thing just seems to be such a major game changer. Today I sit on the couch goofing off with my iPad, while my BB lays beside me, or I'm listening to my iPod because I can't be bothered managing two devices in iTunes.

I have a question about iM that hopefully hasn't been addressed yet:
I have a 3GS, so I will (eventually) be running OS5, and I don't have a data plan. My brother has a 4 with a data plan, and he too will get OS5. If he sends me a pic/video as an iMessage, will my phone receive/load it once I connect to WiFi? I'll assume yes, as any Wifi iPads and Touches would sort of get screwed if they couldn't receive messages unless on WiFi. Thanks!

Apple should get rid of iChat now (the final blow) and just integrate iMessage and FaceTime on the Mac so you don't have all these multiple messaging/chat services. Add FaceTime support to iMessage on the phone as well.

So what happens if my friend has an iPod that he doesn't keep on him? If I try to send him a text, it'll automatically default to an iMessage and he won't see it for a while. And there's really no way to tell if they have their iPod/iPad on them beyond the read receipts (which they could even disable), forcing you to likely send the message again - this time as a text.

It's a great concept, but a bit flawed in it's practicality. It works for BBM since BBM only works on phones, and if they don't have their phone on them, they're not going to get a text anyways. But lots of people don't keep their iPods (let alone their iPads) on them at all times like they do a phone.

You can set iMessages to be based on a phone number or email address. If they have an iPod only, then they probably cannot set a phone number to receive messages.

whereas Mac's, iPad's and iPod Touches used Apple ID. now the iPhone can use the Apple ID or the phone number.

You can use any email and not just Apple ID, it defaults to Apple ID but you can add any other email to it.

This allows you to share Apple ID for itunes/appstore/ibooks between devices and still keep everything else (facetime/imessage/game center) separate.

I understand you have your phone number and your email set up for imessage. the question if you have mulitple devices and someone sends you an imessage to you phone number and not your email will it still come across to the ipad? or do they have to send it to the email that is associated with both?

I get the feeling that it's all integrated. Once your phone and email are linked in iMessages, you would receive to all devices irrespective of what the sender chose.

iMessage is a great feature to have but the con is like facetime, you only can use it with other iOS 5 devices. Like it or not, we all have friends with WP7 or Android and what not and we cannot connect with them this way.

Great writeup BTW

Damn! You have friends with Windows 7??
