I haven't begun receding yet, but it doesn't hurt to look into it just in case. I'd say 1 in 3 of the men in my immediate to extended family keep their hair on average. Definitely worth it to just accept it and shave if it does happen (i'll pass on the cheesy comb overs), but if it's really that big of a deal I'd stay away from pills at least personally. I'm not interested in introducing foreign hormones and suffering weird (and possibly permanent) side effects (hello, finasteride). Playing lottery with my health over a cosmetic issue sounds foolish at best. Best to get a procedure done if it's a personal concern IMO.

Maybe I'm clicking on the wrong stuff, but what i see is pictures of balding guys who get a tattoo of hair, but still look like they have a buzz cut. Am I missing something or is that it: you get this done and u don't really have a full head of hair, just an illusion of a buzz cut?

Your right, just an illusion of a buzz cut.

I say take some Finasteride (Propecia) 1mg orally once daily + Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine). Side effects of of Propecia are abnormal ejaculation, tender breast or decreased libido are possible, but since you are taking a small dose compared to a person that uses it for BPH (it's 5mg rx) the effects are not as marked if any. Improvement w/ it could take up to 3 months or longer to see effects and if you start seeings side effects you can just stop it and in a while you should be back to your normal self & w/ less hair. Use Rogaine also since it works differently than Propecia. The bad thing about this things is that if you stop it or you forget doses then they won't work well.

or shave it off; I have seen those head tattoos and they just look weird and unnatural.

I just shaved mine. My hair started receding around 19 and it's just gotten worse. I'm 27 now. I don't really see my type on the norwood scale. Basically now, everything on top is thinner. If I let my hair all grow out starting from a complete shave, the sides would fill in quicker. If I give myself a high and tight sometimes while on military duty, then you can't tell as bad, because I'll shave the sides with a razor. As far as hair being gone, I'm definitely a norwood III.

It bothers me still a bit, because I like my hair, but I'm not about to go spend a bunch of money trying to fix it. I'd rather just spend a bunch of money on razors.

Plus I think I have a nicely shaped head for the bald look and now I can grow my gay lumberjack beard out.

Learn to live with it. Consider Patrick Stewart, bald since he was 19: In an interview with Michael Parkinson, he expressed gratitude for Gene Roddenberry's riposte to a reporter who said, "Surely they would have cured baldness by the 24th century," to which Roddenberry replied, "In the 24th century, they wouldn't care."
Be who you are - I have no hair, I'm still me, I do what I do, I am who I am. I used to have long hair, down to my waist, but it all started falling out, so I cut it off, and ultimately shaved the remaining bits off, double-zero. Glad I don't have to spend time worrying about - much better things to do with my limited time.

Exactly. Get over losing your hair, guys. It doesn't matter.

I don't think it's being lost, reports from The Dark Side seem to suggest its migrating, in a Southernly direction.... Or maybe the lack up top, draws more attention below, like a Pinstriped suit.

;)

It's funny, but I do notice that lots of bald guys tend to grow out their facial hair by sporting a beard, goatee, or some other style. It's like they are saying, "hey, look here and not up there, I can still grow hair". I know I do that sometimes. Maybe it's subconscious.

That is true. Personally I do it sometimes too, but did it with or without (scalp)hair. But after shaving off, I definitely had to buy new glasses.

Man, this thread makes me miss my hair a little bit.

I agree, it's interesting when guys do that.

I've always hated facial hair. As I've lost my hair, I've never felt the need to 'compensate' elsewhere.

Started losing my hair at 24, had a FULL head of hair (thanks mom's dad). I had a striking resemblance to actors like David Duchovney from his X-Files days in the hair department. But then it all disappeared within 2 years in the front anyway. I started just keeping it short, then shorter, then shorter, then one night while buzzing my head after a few drinks, I accidentally buzzes the back of my head without the proper attachment. That gave me a racing stripe up the back of my head to the front.

It was inevitable from that point on. Been shaving ever since given that, according to my fiancé, I am blessed with a nicely shaped head. Though I still have dreams where I look in the mirror and have my old full head of hair that existed just a few years ago. Just embrace it and don't worry. Women I know loooved bald guys.

I don't think it has necessarily sth. to do with compensation. Some wo/men like beards, some don't. You prefer moustaches (--> avatar), I prefer a +-1mm cut all around. And as long the other gender is making detours to come along my way, I'm gonna keep it like that...maybe.

My wife and I call these the douchebag beards.

Oh and the guy in NathanMuir's avatar isn't him. That's a character from a TV show or movie. I think maybe "The Office" or "Ron Burgundy".

Thank you for the clarification(s). If you and your wife are interested: those pics you showed have nothing to do with what i meant.

Plus I wouldn't consider these guys exactly bold.

I don't think I'll ever be as much of a man as Ron Swanson. :p

Oh, the travesty! :D

Thank God

Good for you???

When I see beards like that all I can think of is people like the "my new haircut" video.

Thank's for the link, didn't know him..although I didn't assume that it was actually you in your avatar ( but hey, who knows)

Ron Swanson obviously must be THE man, he's got eve more wiki-references than Casanova!

I have currently found an alternative, but considering diligently. What are you guys doing to manage/cope with your hair loss? Mind you I am 23 years old and am a Norwood III on the scale.

I've noticed that the more guys do to try to hide/disguise/reverse their hair loss, the more ridiculous they look. I'm including combovers, toupees, transplants, plugs, tattoos, spray powders, etc. - all they do is draw attention to the fact that you're losing your hair.

Guys who lose their hair and just wear it with a reasonable cut and style seem to look pretty normal; I don't really notice whether they're losing their hair unless something draws my attention to it (see above for examples).

If it gets thin, let it get thin. If it falls out, it falls out. Life goes on.

I lucked out and got my mom's hair.

So what is SHE doing about HER baldness as a result? :D

We should be thankfull being MEN with hair-loss..it's much more of a 'problem' if you're a woman.

What do you mean? I haven't lost any hair.

Yes, you make a good point about women, but my observations remain - even women with thinning hair can look ridiculous, depending on what they do to try to cover it up.

sorry, it wasn' t meant personal of course, i felt like everybody here was bold.:p

I agree completely..just wanted to point out, that they haven't got the socialy fully accepted possibility to run around bold (and a beard to compensate).

Your right, just an illusion of a buzz cut.

Seems weird to me. And what's the point? You may fool someone from a distance but what happens when you get up close and maybe even physical? They go to run their fingers through your hair, or just give it a playful toss and....nothing? This new way of covering up hair loss is very curious to me....

I would be a Norwood II. Not really concerned right now about my hair, but a dermatologist already told me my top hair is thinning, and I need to realize eventually it will be gone.:(

For now, I'm taking some things (a shampoo and a spray) to see if they help a little, and maybe retard my baldness.
