Most movies are wider (aspect ration 21:9) than the iPhone screen (aspect ratio 19.5:9). So you either zoom in and lose the edges or fit to the width of the phone and get black bars. Either way the island will be cut out of the screen as shown in Apple’s demonstration. If you don’t watch ultra wide video you may never experience this, but for those of us who do, the notch is going to be much less distracting than the island due to the fact there are no pixels lit up on the far side of it.
Why wouldn't there be a mode where you just get black bars all around, almost like a bezel? That's how it works now with the notch. You double tap on it to do this. Sure, the image is a little smaller, but this way you don't get any cutouts.

Unpopular opinion but the purple iPhone has the color of artificial grape (medicine, candy, etc.) and as such looks cheap and ugly.

But again, personal opinion.
Yeah, I was thinking grape cough syrup when I saw the photos. I guess that was the shade of purple Apple had to use given how the colors of the Pro lineup tend to be more subdued than the more vibrant color shades of the non-Pro models. Just like sierra blue had a strong gray component, this purple also seems to have a strong gray component. I don’t think it looks cheap, but it may not be the shade of preference for some purple lovers.

The new pill seems alright, assuming it takes up the same space as the notch it shouldn't get too much in the way. Not sure how it will look when playing videos and images. My concern now is how much additional screen space it will take up and will it be distracting when watching Netflix or gaming.

Too bad was hoping to upgrade this time around but not enough innovation and improvements yet to warrant the price tag for me :(
If you flip the phone upside down the pill sort of works like a home button of sorts - ooops - innovation!

I do love Apple for a lot of their design choices, especially recently, the iMac refresh with all its colours are absolutely glorious. But the notch and the pill cut out have both been just dreadful. And to call that pill cut out a “Dynamic island”, to actually give it a name, it’s just cringe inducing.

Let’s be honest here Tim, the pill shaped cut out is a design flaw, it’s barely any different to the notch in size and inconvenience. It’s a short coming in your display tech, yet you give it some awful name, whack an icon either side of it and sell it like it’s a design feature instead, sadly some people hang off every word you say and they lap this stuff up.

I’d much rather have an extra 1-2mm bezel at the top and have everything stored up there, with either a hole punch camera or a camera under the screen itself (the tech is there for this). Unfortunately Apple and a few disciples are obsessed with tiny bezels, despite them offering no discernible benefit to the user, in fact they just lead to more accidental touches.

Similarly I’d rather have a slightly deeper phone, and have the rear camera array flush with the phone case, rather than it stick out so much in one corner, I’d then happily use this space and have a larger battery in the phone. Yes it would be heavier, but not massively so. But then I’ve always associated a heavier phone or device particularly one of Apple making to help add to that feeling or high build quality, lightweight on the other hand feels cheap.

I’m happy with my 13 Pro Max. I’ll upgrade to the 15 when hopefully this dynamic island is binned off, and the enforced USB-C port hopefully leads to an actual design change to the handset itself. I feel Apple have included the pill cut out to make phone look obviously different from the 13, and then when we go full screen no cut outs next year it’s an another noticeable change.

Currently nowhere near enough difference between 13 and 14 to warrant an upgrade.

What's hilarious to me, honestly amusing, is how so many are squinting their eyes and touting this as a significant upgrade.

It looks like a fine device, as my 13 Pro Max is a fine device. But I must be getting older or maybe smarter because I can’t seem to make myself care this year.

Better release than last year’s 13 Pro/Max. And I’m saying that as a 13PM owner. The 11 and 12 releases were very average. I had an XS Max and neither the 11 or 12 made me wish I was upgrading. I upgraded last year due to wife needing a new phone. But 14 makes me somewhat want to upgrade even though I won’t.

I’m fact it’s seems all releases this year are better than last year in terms of bringing new things to the table. Watch has temp sensor and a few other things and new AirPods Pro look terrific.

I thought the purple was too light at first, but seeing it in these photos, it actually looks like the graphite option. The purple really shines at an angle and I like the contrast of the darker camera bump. I'm definitely getting the purple one.

As a diehard mini-form-factor-user I’m grateful Apple made my decision not to upgrade so easy.
See you next year with an upgraded SE if I need to replace my 12 mini! Good for the environment and good for my personal economy.

They've shown their hand twice now, they're holding back the best color for a spring refresh sales boost.

I think I'll actually wait until mid cycle, pay off the rest of the blue iPhone 13 Pro, and get the awesome color they release in spring on trade-in for about $50 less than I'd get on trade in if I did it now.

That'll give me time to see how this whole Fantasy Island in No SIM World works out.

I'm not Tim Cook, so until he reads your message and responds to you, I'll offer my own opinion.

First of all, I disagree that "Dynamic Island" is cringe inducing. I thought it was one of the better parts of today's presentation. Apple's made a design choice here, and you're not a fan of it, which is fine, but that doesn't make your perspectively objectively true for everyone else.

Personally, I prefer the notch or the cutout, with more screen. The top of the device is pretty much reserved for system level information anyway, so it's not like we're really losing much here. In fact, the work that Apple has done here to essentially hide the hardware, and integrated software for notifications and user feedback is pretty clever, at least to me.

While I'm starting to get annoyed with the current camera design, and cameras getting larger, I do not want an overall thicker and heavier phone simply to make it flush. Not only do I not want the thickness, but if you're adding a larger battery into this space, the cost of the phone is going to go up also.

If you're happy with the 13, then you're happy, so why are you complaining?

Re: dynamic island going away next year, I doubt that. Think of all the software that's going to be designed around this concept over the next year and you think that quickly they're just going to drop it? I'm going to bet that dynamic island starts making its way into other Apple products also. They're going to continue building on this concept for a while.

Fully with you on USB-C though. It's a slap in the face to customers, and poor user experience design from Apple at this point to have as many devices as they do that all use different cables.

So, they have done the following for flaships since 2019: Midnight Green, Pacific Blue, Sierra Blue, Alpine Green (Mid cycle) and now Purple.

Hmm, I wonder what are they gonna do for mid cycle? I am suspecting that leaked blue that didn't show up?

But the bigger question, whats gonna be the flagship color for the iPhone 15 Pro/Max? I am suspecting Lavender.

This would be pretty sick. Some deep reddish tone.

So, no upgrade again for me. After I got a full frame Sony a7iv camera, i don’t take pics or video with my phone anymore, so the camera is whatever. The only reason I would’ve upgraded my iphone 12 mini would have been USB-C. I’m sick and tired of carrying two cables around, I’m done with this garbage.
You walk around with that camera in your pocket at all times? That’s nice

Odd question, but are the bezels thinner? Same dimensions on the outside from what I researched but thinner bezels are stated throughout rumors / forums but same screen size?

I was looking forward to an upgrade to my 12PM but now without the sim card tray (I go on vacation 2-3 times a year outside the US and I refused to pay the exorbitant fees that verizon charges for the roaming and rather switch SIM cards.) but that's just me. I've been contemplating on switching to the fold but the Apple ecosystem with wallet/applepay is pretty hard for me to leave.. 😂
