narrowing it down to 3 is simply impossible... if i include Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Shawshank redemption, and the Godfather i'll have to exclude Pulp Fiction, 2001, Ronin, raiders of the lost ark, blade runner, ben hur, nightmare before christmas

I love Blade Runner only for how incredibly neo-film noir it is, it is beyond beautiful, it encapsulated everything of the era, reinterpreted it in a thoroughly post modern sci-fi setting projecting how life would be if the 80s sensibilities and socio-economic had carried on for the next few decades becoming more refined and reached their inevitable collapse. That and it achieved the near impossible task of being completely timeless, that film has not dated at all.

Note: I have a TV & film degree. It ruins your ability to just "watch" films, but at the very least, makes you understand why a film is good.

Sorry if this post seems a bit intense, I've missed getting deep over films since coming out of uni :p

1. Star Wars
2. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
3. Red Cliff (Great once you get past the subtitles. And the International version, not the Theatrical version)

I guess I could also throw in;
Tombstone
Black Hawk Down
Gladiator
300

Three is pretty hard...in no particular order:

Brazil
Apocalypse Now
Blazing Saddles
Time Bandits
The Life of Brian
The Big Lebowski
History of the World Part I
12 Angry Men (1957)

There are more, but I can't think of them right now...

Top 3? There are loads that have moved me, impressed me, taught me, inspired me. But the 3 films I can watch over and over again;

1. Die Hard
2. Lord of the Rings (all, extended)
3. Truman Show

Notable others - Die Hard with a Vengeance, Home Alone 2, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 24 Hour Party People, The Dark Knight, Terminator 2, My Neighbour Totoro, Borat.

Yes. Pretty hard indeed.

There are movies I have liked, but have not been bothered about and others (not many) which have blown me away, and which I am more than happy to see again. It is difficult to bring it down to only three, and I see that a number of other posters have disregarded that parameter.

Of the 'popular' classic, of course, I love (in no particular order):

Life of Brian

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Pulp Fiction

Jackie Brown

Godfather (Part 2 especially)

Shawshank Redemption

but there are others which have left me open mouthed at their sheer mastery of their medium, their insight, subtlety and bitter sweet narrative verve.....

Again, in no particular order:

My Life as a Dog

Au revoir, Les Enfants

Lone Star

The Third Man

The Leopard

Jesus of Montreal

1- Star Wars: specially The Empire Strikes Back and the Revenge of the Sith
2- Highlander http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091203/
3- Pulp Fiction
