Man, it's hard to narrow it down to five. I could easily pick five strong candidates from a half-dozen genres... and how do you compare your number one pick in comedy with your number one pick in war movies?

1) Patton. The benchmark for all epic war movies. It's also one of those grand tales that sort of takes you along on this larger-than-life adventure.

2) Office Space. As stupid as it sounds, this movie changed my life. It actually encouraged me to quit my job and go do something I enjoyed more. I haven't regretted it one bit.

3) Planet of the Apes. I actually like all six of the POTA movies (including Marky Mark's remake in '01), as well as the TV series. Oddly, I'm not a huge sci-fi fan at all. Something about this movie really captured my imagination. The sequels were campy, but in a strange way that even added to their appeal.

4) Saving Private Ryan. Of all the many awesome war movies that have been made, this one probably comes the closest to being historically correct, and capturing the horror of combat. Band of Brothers was a terrific series that was created using some of the related material that Hanks and Spielberg found.

5) The World at War. Okay, so I'm cheating here. This was actually a documentary series that aired on TV in 1973. Wiki says it was 26 episodes. I don't remember if I saw it when it first came out, but it aired throughout my youth. There have been three really awesome documentary series on TV, this was the best. The other two were Ken Burns' creations (one called "The Civil War" and the other "Baseball"). Pretty much everything else that has ever been made for TV has been crap.

Honorable mentions. There are a bunch of movies that are really no less magnificent than the ones I selected.

Apocalypse Now
Grand Prix
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Le Mans
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
A Bridge too Far
Titanic
Bowling for Columbine
Wonderland
Platoon

Honorable Mention - Casino Royale
5 - The Rescuers: Down Under
4 - Office Space
3 - The Quiet Man
2 - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
1 - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn

Also; The Whole Nine Yards, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: First Contact
TEG

1. Dear Frankie
2. Sahara
3. The Illusionist
4. Double Jeopardy
5. ... I know there's a fifth but my brain is dead this evening.. Matrix or Blade Runner or something dark and atmospheric.

My favourite Comedy has got to be either the above-mentioned Holy Grail or The Mask. It's a toss up.

My top five movies:
1. Sixteen Candles
2. Breakfast Club
3. Weird Science
4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
5. Home Alone
Boy it really is hard to pick just five movies! I guess you could say I'm a sucker for John Hughes Movies! I can't believe no one mentioned Sixteen Candles yet, it is such a silly but deep movie. Plus you can't beat Molly Ringwald...
The sad thing is that almost all of those movies are older than me!

Let's seee.....

Debbie Does Dallas
Riding Miss Daisy

Oh wait, my favorite movies...
:D

American Beauty
Forbidden Planet
Contact
50 First Dates

Damn, it's hard to come up with just 5. There's so many. :)

Changing all the time due to poor immediate recall but ... and in no order ..

Stroszek by Herzog - the American dream torn apart.
5 Easy Pieces by Rafelson - Great tragic performance by Jack.
Sunrise by Murnau - Lyrical and innovative.
Walkabout by Roeg - Stunning editing/collage sequences.
Festen - Incedible emsemble piece.

Scuse shoddy one line summaries - in a hurry.

Wow, this is pretty hard, so I'll make two lists of top 5's.

First list - Movies I take on a more lighter note, but still all-time favorites:

5)Halloween (1978)
4)Forrest Gump
3)Star Wars Ep. IV
2)Fast Times at Ridgemont High
1)300

List number Two - Movies I've taken with me through life:

5) Seven (Se7en) - I don't know. This movie gets you thinking. Not like the thinking as in there's so many clues and pieces put together, but the kind of thinking that makes you feel guilty for sitting on the couch, eating those packages of dorito's (aka sloth & gluttony).

4) Donnie Darko - To this day, I still don't get some points of the movie, but the way it's set up and everything just keeps me intrigued and I think about it from time to time. The theme song (Mad World by Gary Jules) is also amazing. :)

3) South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut - Well, what can I say? I'm and avid South Park fan, and I think Trey Parker and Matt Stone are incredibly talented. The movie just proves how great the series was before then and is now.

2) American History X - This movie was hugely controversial amongst my age group at the time (anywhere from high school freshmen to seniors), and it did a good job a delivering some awareness of what people believe to be neo-nazism. Seeing as how maybe, just maybe, there's always good in people, this movie showed me that hope is always there.

1) The Kill Bill series - He may be a crazy lune head, but Tarantino is an artistic genius. All of the subtle and obvious connections to all of the movies, the story-line, the immense effects, the acting--everything keeps me captivated. I can watch the movie over and over and catch something I hadn't before.

A recent movie that deserves a mention is Cloverfield. I'm not a big Lost fan, but the intense hype got me to go see it. It's a must see (if you have an open mind), and it will leave you more inquisitive leaving then going in, but it all depends how you take the movie. Go check it out if you haven't already.

Enough blabber. And for the record, I'm en route to be a film student next year. :)
