I could not agree more with the sentiments on the disappointed iPhone release. Don't kid yourself. It is a minor upgrade. (

I would take the other side of the debate. If you are trying to compare spec. Iphone 5 is no where near a lot of Android phone on the market today. But if you look at Apple's design effort, you will see that this phone is build for light weight, thinner and quality feel. The components that they choose and the design effort all contributed to the slim, light weight and quality feel. It is much like a high end purse (LV, Channel) rather than a mid price purse (Coach). If you really look behind the hood, the effort to slim down the phone and reduce the weight while increase the screen size and holding the battery is much more than just adding an NFC chip. They need to introduce a brand new in cell touch screen technology to cut the thickness by 0.4 mm. It may not be a technology that you appreciate but it is inaccurate to say that Iphone 5 is a minor upgrade.

I must have read over 150 initial reviews on Iphone 5. And the reviewer world is divided into two groups. The techie based review blast Apple for not including all the latest tech feature like NFC or the rumored finger security feature. The vast majority of the main stream reviewers focus on the feel and the look of the phone. I have a Samsung Infuse now and it does everything that I could ask for and I think most of the Iphone 5 buyers are simple user that may have a few apps. Like it or not, smartphone is moving into mass consumer phase and the looks and feel will become very important. About 5% of the review start to compare the look and feel of Iphone 5 to S3 and complain about plastic S3 body and use the word "cheap" to describe S3. The full blown review will come out this weekend (I hope), and we will see how this will go down. If the buying public value the design elements that Apple focus on, Iphone 5 will be a much bigger seller than 4S.

OP is wrong. There are three kinds of people disappointed with the iPhone:
1) genuinely disappointed because it lacks something you'd really use. I saw one post from a user in Japan that might fit this bill, as that country has a lot more NFC implemented.
2) disappointed because of wildly unrealistic expectations. Apple creates a great product to start with and gradually improves on it year after year. They rarely totally change things up or cram in the latest tech just because someone else did. This is true in all of their product lines, and anyone who follows apple knows it. Yet some people continue to expect radical overhauls every iteration and are constantly disappointed when they don't get them.
3) not going to be happy no matter what. This could be fandroids, haters, paid Samsung trolls, or just people who are never satisfied with anything. this group could have gotten a phone that makes pancakes, and they would have complained it doesn't make french toast.

I'd venture that category 1 is a very small group, and 2 is the biggest. People who actually like apple products and had realistic expectations saw this for what it was - probably the second biggest update to the iPhone (behind 3GS-->i4) that brought a lot of good things but did not (as apple never does) try to match spec for spec with the competition.

Nope, just disappointed because ultimately the 5 seems like a worse phone than the 4s - worse connector, worse design, worse screen ratio, worse maps.

Slight improvements in other areas don't make up for it.

Faster processor, faster graphics, much faster cellular, faster wifi, thinner, lighter, less shatter-prone (likely), better rear camera, better front camera, probably more RAM, more screen space, better antenna design, more mics for clearer sound, and better battery life. Those are "slight improvements" that don't make up for having to buy an adapter for the connector and download a 3rd party google maps application? You're not serious?

What I don't understand is why people who don't like the iPhone spend so much time trying to get other people to not like it. I switched from an iPhone 4s to an HTC One X and it was a really nice phone but there are some things I have gotten used to with the iPhone that I don't want to be without so I returned the One X. I don't go around telling everybody how terrible the One X is because it's not a bad phone. I joined android central when I was trying to decide which android to try out (S3 or One X) and I hardly ever saw anybody coming into the Android forums and trying to say iPhone is better or Windows phone is better. It was strictly Android discussion. I just don't understand where the hate comes from for the iPhone by some people. There are people reading and posting in the iPhone forums who will never in their lifetime own an iPhone. What's the point? Is it just because they like to argue with people or what? Do they think people are going to switch away from iPhone because some guy in a forum said that it sucks? I really would love to hear what the reason is. Every Cnet article I read about an iPhone has 100 people posting how terrible they are and how worthless the article is for talking about the iPhone. Do these people not have anything better to do than read articles they don't care about so that can post comments about a phone they don't care about? I just don’t get it.

i tested Andriod.. end of the day.. still will probably go back to Apple

sad, but true.

Went from Iphone 4 to Samsung GS 2, HTC one X, Google Galaxy Nexus, Samsung S3 now, but end of the day.... will probably get a iphone 5...

i can't get any games on Google Play to update... too many versions of ICS, Jelly Bean and having all the carrier/phone makers make us wait for update is just not my cup of tea anymore.

i gave android a try with different phone makers.. but end of the day.. iOS , boring but works.. and updates...

continue to be disappointed, to those who are.

there's another few tens or hundreds of millions who aren't.
this thread yields a huge distortion cause the world doesnt revolve around the forum or the others who also want to express their dismay.

you are just one puny little dot. even with the huge number, it's still one puny little smudge.

I was expecting 4.3-4.5" screen with 128 GB storage, so option 2 but i need a phone I could really work with so option 1

I will go for a Samsung product even if I have an apple ecosystem, this number 5 was just not good enough and I predict AAPL downturn within next 6 months

Put this way, to your average phone user, not tech nerds like us.

Back in 2010, you have two phones sitting on desk, a iPhone3GS and brand new iPhone4. To the average user the iPhone4 instantly grabs their attention, with the beautiful new industrial design, and high res "retina' display, it is night and day a HUGE upgrade over the the 3GS. No question the iPhone4 is a must have device to get back then, even Android phones didn't really compare.

Now fast forward to today, put a iPhone4S and an iPhone5 on a desk, I don't think the average user will be foaming at the mouth for the iPhone5 like they were with the 4 over the the 3GS. The iPhone5 still looks much pretty the same like the iPhone4/4S, same design, pretty much the same "retina' screen, only a hair taller now, and thinner now. And iOS6 doesn't look overall that much different at all lately, pretty much the same old OS still. And now in 2012 Android has finally matured, has some really nice phones to offer now like the HTC One X and Galaxy SIII, where as back in 2010, Android was still pretty rough and not in the same league.

And this Fall we have the Nokia Lumia 920 and upcoming Nexus 5.0.

To me the iPhone5 is just a big meh, it's cool, but not ground breaking awesome. It's more the iOS is looking dated and stale lately, it needs a refreshing and a new UI, which is coming in either iOS7 or iOS8 for sure. Even Apple said last year, something along the lines that future iOS's will get an new UI down the line.

3GS to i4 is the biggest jump in the iPhone's history. That's pretty clear. So comparing this update to that one makes it look small. But compared to literally every other update, it's actually pretty major.

There is not going to be a revolutionary new product every year (ie original iPhone), nor is there even going to be an iPhone4-esque update every year. It's just not possible. Once you have a wildly successful, fully mature product, you neither can nor should make huge changes to it every year.

And finally, yes, the competition is a lot better now. You're probably never again going to see a single phone manufacturer stand out above the competition in the way Apple did in the early days of the iPhone. The whole market is too evolved and too competitive. Even if someone comes up with a great innovation, it's going to be copied but a dozen competitors in less than a year.

People might be disappointed in the new iPhone, and that's mainly because of all the leaks. Never before so much leaked of the iPhone before it was released. When a product is released like this the surprise is very important. Anyone that follows the Apple news a little knew from before how it was going to look, the new screen, new connector, processor, ram etc. Because people are not surprised they might have, the erroneous impression, that it's not new. But in fact, this might be one of Apple's biggest upgrades.

Leaks can do damage. Even to companies like Apple.

Oh yeah, i am so disappointed!

It only is 2x faster, alot thinner, alot lighter, larger screen, better battery life, looks AMAZING in black, has LTE, better low light pictures from the camera.

The main thing, people have WAY too high hopes!

[*]Data speeds. I don't want to hear about battery. The RAZR MAXX is thinner than the iPhone and under regular usage (Except streaming audio) can last between 15-24 hours and that's on 4G LTE; light usage up to 36 hours. That's assuming you DON'T use WiFi.

No it is not

iPhone 5
123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm

Razr Maxx
130.7 x 68.9 x 9 mm

The Razr Maxx is 6.9 mm taller, 10.3 mm wider and 1.4 mm Thicker than the iPhone 5 giving it a lot more room for a bigger battery.

There is a simple reason why people are disappointed.

People are more invested in short term visual investment instead of internal components and nobody cares about. They wanted something to stimulate your visual mind.

It's like look a good who's hot and and girl who's hot with big boobs.

You can't really tell which was actually smarter. But you can't stop looking at the big boobs girl.

Yes I am and don't plan on getting it... But never going back to Android... I am not a self conscious about myself that I need to be "unique" with a phone (that a lot of people still have other than yourself), so ROMs are pointless. I have computer programming experience and I still don't find the appeal. The apps on Android suck. There is no use denying this and if anyone does, they are in denial. All the free apps you claim to get, I can get for free too. They have both a paid and free version and I like the paid just because I hate advertisement. Java is just a clunky language and is the only reason quad core is huge in that platform. So dual core is still viable on iOS. I have the Nexus 7 and regret buying it. I only use gmail, YouTube, and pulse... What a great selection I have. It is also very laggy. Project Butter needs a lot of work still. And I find myself using my 4th gen iPod more than the Nexus because it gives me better performance.

I just want to say that I disagree with everything the OP posted. Everything.

There is not one factual statement in the entire post, and not one opinion ground in reality.

As I read through, I sped up to scanning through, then when I read the line about iOS "dumbing things down" for people, the troll flags went up.

You, OP, have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Which is fascinating considering how much of nothing you have to offer.

Same could be said about your post. Completely close minded.

I was a little dissapointed at first but like everyone else it seems like im upgrading and the fact that I am just straight up over it because I think the new black one looks awesome

Faster processor, faster graphics,

Minor spec bump.

much faster cellular,

My carrier user the two 4G frequencies that aren't supported by any of the three iPhone 5 models.

faster wifi,

Old wifi was as fast as my router supports.

Actively dislike this - harder to hold, looks nasty. Feels like a complete waste over more battery.

No interest in this. Generally liked the heft.

less shatter-prone (likely),

Never damaged my iPhone in five years.

better rear camera, better front camera,

Genuine improvements to be fair.

probably more RAM,

No evidence to suggest this whatsoever.

more screen space,

Actively dislike.

better antenna design,

Apple have said this before and been wrong.

more mics for clearer sound,

and better battery life.

Flat out don't believe this is true. We know what the battery is. It's not very good.

Those are "slight improvements" that don't make up for having to buy an adapter for the connector and download a 3rd party google maps application? You're not serious?

Yes, they're slight improvements. Meanwhile Lightning as a connector is a disaster, trapping us in glacial update slowness for another decade, losing several features and giving a more delicate connector that will cause more breakages. And it seems to contain a DRM chip meaning third parties will now need to licence *anything* that connects to it, pushing up prices of everything from cables to docks significantly. Meanwhile the ecosystem of always knowing someone with an appropriate charging cable nearby or a dock to borrow is lost for a decade.

Downloading Google Maps will not fully fix all the problems caused by it's removal, even if the app is hypothetically perfect. It won't catch links from Safari/address book etc etc. It won't be the API used by other apps. The backgrounding process will kill it off faster than native apps, losing my position more. We're yet to see if O2's image compression proxy will cock the resolution up as it does on the web version.

This. But it is funny to see though, haha.
