I’m not sure why all the articles on this. It’s an overpriced, not particularly interesting product designed for a minority of people with money to waste / flaunt. But I’ll bite. They’re probably waiting for the Vision “Pro” 2 (what is pro about it?) where it is priced more realistically before they spend time and effort developing apps for it.

I’m curious to know exactly why some devs opt out of making their free iPad apps available on Mac and VP. Opting out probably takes more effort than not opting out.
Obviously for paid apps, they’ll want to charge additional money for using their software on an additional platform, so they need to set that up first.
But for free apps, all I can guess is it’s “just in case”. Even if they don’t have a plan, it’s easier to add it back later than to take it off later or charge for it later after people have gotten used to having it for free. But it’s doubtful they’ll ever add it later because that “just in case” will persist.

Spotify? YouTube? Why would anyone care?
Isn't porn the only killer app for VisionPro?
I assume this comment is made largely in jest, but people keep talking about that use case. But do these people realize the AVP has two downward facing cameras tracking every movement of your hands? ; )

All Apple would have to do is let google know they no longer will be using them as the default search on safari, the new app will be developed for vision pro in a day

Personally, I am not concerned thanks to having Safari available. Long term, their availability would influence my continued subscriptions to Netflix and YouTube Premium. Although, I expect it won’t be too long for Netflix and Google to join.

What do we think is the reasoning of disabling their iPad apps from running?
  • Did they at least test them and feel they weren’t “good enough”
  • Are they over Apple being involved in markets they want to be in
  • There are also rumors of some exclusivity agreements with Meta
An even better question is why did Apple give developers the option for an opt-out at all? I don't think they ever got that option for iPhone apps running on the iPad. Interesting choice and I assume there's a reason for it.

As long as I can get a browser with a good adblocker, watching YouTube without an official app isn't going to be a problem.

(if the only browser available is Safari though... jeez. 😩)

Majority of iPad apps don’t even run on macOS, kinda jealous chromebooks have every app on the play store

They similarly disallowed their iPad apps to run on macOS when Big Sur/Apple Silicon first launched, which was also enabled by default.
Yeah, Apple capitulated and made macOS support “optional” and I disagree with it.

In this case, it’s still set to default and the developers have to disable it to remove it from the store. It’s how macOS should have stayed.

They’re actually spending more resources to not allow the iPad apps to run on Apple Vision Pro - all of the apps work by default, they have to specifically disallow it to keep it off.

Ridiculous.
Exactly, this is getting out of control and annoying… what’s up with these companies blocking the iPad apps on macOS (when a macOS one doesn’t exist) and now with the Vision Pro.

All the apps I have tried that didn’t tinker with the default “work everywhere” setting seem perfect enough. The apps think they are running on an iPad and all is well… notifications, widgets, etc all work.
The YouTube app on macOS would be a lot better than the browser one too.

It’s petty. Where are all the “antitrust” and “I want to do with my software what I want” et al complain crowd when you need them!

What sucks is Google has a VR version of YouTube already designed for the Meta Quest 2 and 3. Would it really be a lot of effort for them to port it over?
They don't need to port that over, just recompile the iPad App and test it. The hard work is already done. I think its either some sour grapes or exclusive deals with Meta stopping them.

It’s getting worse and worse, YouTube needs an app the quest 3 has a great app, this Vision Pro is looking like dead on arrival, people will buy it to play with but the returns will be huge
Won’t be available…at release.

What is the target demographic then? You really think businesses are going to buy beta hardware and do what with exactly? Like most things Apple they simply market “pro” models as a tier for consumers who think they need the best of the best to edit a 5 min YouTube video.
What is beta hardware? What hardware has Apple ever released that was beta?

Things may get better in subsequent releases but Apple doesn’t do beta hardware. That’s simply not how they do things.

I'm not normally bearish on Apple, but so many big names choosing not to support it is not a great signal. These are companies that would have certainly had development devices. Then again, this might not be about the vision pro directly. It is possible that these companies are doing some belt tightening themselves. The macroeconomic situation is better today than a year ago, but it is widely believed that orgs sensitive to interest rates will not enjoy a soft landing. The biotech startup I work at just laid off ~15% of staff yesterday to balance the books through 2025.
