A couple more things: You can no longer add a video to your Favorites, and you can no longer see more than a handful of other videos from a particular user while you're watching one of their videos. This update takes away more functionality than it adds :(

The last time I tried the old app you couldn't even see a list of your most recent subscription videos so I think this version is a massive improvement. Still, lots of odd limitations so I'll probably stick to Chromecast.

So I got an AppleTV 3 recently and have a question. Does this update to apps and new apps being added happen automatically or do I need to do something manually?

Advertisements... I will continue to block them on every device I can until the day I die. BURN IN HELL, ADVERTISEMENTS!!

If everyone stops this ad madness and it means that we no longer get new exciting content, then I'm totally fine with that shift for humanity. We will manage. We did for thousands of years before.

Advertisements are way out of hand and it's time we take a stand against it.

Ad apologists--- Go watch Idiocracy and tell me that's where you want to be.

I still prefer hooking up a Mac Mini to my TV. I can do whatever I want with it. Play old console games, play m3u8 streams, browse the web, play .mkv files, accept incoming Airplay streams with Airserver, and play Youtube videos with ads stripped out.

Is there a way to downgrade? The youtube update just completely ruined the simple way my kid could watch youtube videos.

Okay this is REALLY annoying. According to YouTube AppleTV help is says:

Movies and TV shows

Watch movies and TV shows purchased on YouTube by signing into the YouTube app. Navigate to the My YouTube tab and scroll down to Purchases to locate and view your purchased content.

EXCEPT THAT IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!

I still get the "Sorry this video is not available to be viewed on this device" error!!!

You realize that the revenue generated by ads on YouTube goes partly towards the owner of the video you are watching right? The YouTube account the video is posted to chooses whether or not to display ads. Some popular channels live solely on the profits from YouTube ads and that is how they are able to keep making videos that people watch and enjoy. Besides, how are they any different from commercials? At least you only have 1 ad to deal with for the most part and not 2 to 5 breaks in your TV episode that contains several different advertisements in 1 sitting.

Would be great if my Apple TV 3 didn't stop recognizing all wireless signals. Last update killed it.

Oh man, it gets better:

On iPad YouTube app, the purchased content will play, but if you try to AirPlay it, only the sound works, and if you try to Mirror it, you are purposely blocked from doing so.

Dislikes:

  • Watching a video, no option to go to channel or subscribe (Usually the "show more from" option when hitting the menu button)
  • Early tests show no people's choice playlists in search results
  • Can't pause video to look at something longer, picture will dim and related videos covers the screen. They could of added a channel link or subscribe button there. Only like options at bottom of related videos.

I don't care about ads one way or the other

Anyone still got the old youtube app on their apple tv 2? I've got all the new channels that came today, but youtube seems to be exactly the same as it's always been.

You do realize I don't care, right? And it's not different from commercials. See, I want all the blasting in your face ads gone. Everywhere.

And I don't watch tv for a variety of reasons.

Read my lips: ADS CAN KISS MY ASS.

I already explained that if getting rid of ads meant we'd have to say bye bye to certain things then so be it. I'm sick and tired of advertisement apologists telling me we need ads for whatever reasons. We do NOT.

Yes! I have the apple tv 2 and nothing about youtube has changed. So glad I still have the 2nd gen. Newer is not always better.

It's kind of pathetic how people are complaining about 'wasting' less than a minute of their time that the could easily go get a cup of coffee or something while it happens.

But, no, we have people whip apparently are okay with other people not seeing content so they don't have to see ads.

Edit: I have a tip for the people who are so against ads on YouTube. Stop watching YouTube.

I loooove how you can hit the play/pause button to pause, but can't use it again to immediately unpause, you have to press the center button :/

This update is so annoying (not the ads)

Woohoo! My ATV2's YouTube app is unchanged. No ad revenue for you, Google.

It's a dinosaur business model. The technology exists for anyone who wants to avoid online advertising. I'm all for content creators making money -- just not with annoying interruption marketing. 30% of Americans have AdBlock installed -- people are figuring this out. You can avoid advertising. Cat is out of the bag. There has to be a better way.
There has to be a better way, but in the meantime annoying ads seem to give the best cost/performance ratio.

Keep in mind that advertisements are how youtube creators get paid. If you have Adblock enabled, they don't get paid for those views.
Oh noes!
My time is more important to me then those youtube "creators" lol. So that's why i always use AdBlock!
It's not my problem if they don't get paid enough. They should get another job, or should i say a real job? :D

The upnext box while viewing is so annoying, uncalled for and badly designed. It covers a large portion of what one is watching. At least allow me to disable it!!! Unbelievable

Why the hell would anyone want to see video advertisements on Apple TV ?

Don't they make enough for users on the web ?

I can understand Hulu Plus doing this, but Youtube ? Google's not got as much money as we think.
