woo adverts how great.

I prefer airplaying youtube from iOS as the app makes navigating better than the clunky apple tv experience that will always leave a lot to be desired until they fix how you interact with the device.

I think the apple tv should be about games apps and content (channel) so far all we have is channels, it's really not even tapping into even 1/3 it's potential!

I have a feeling a console type deal is in the works soon. I hope so.

So crappy ads, and downgraded video quality rather than buffering. Two steps backwards, one step forwards. yeah progress.

Also, they switched to variable bitrate streaming so one can no longer see video while fast forwarding. I hate this update

The ensuing meltdown from my toddlers should be interesting. I wonder if they'll understand why they suddenly need to watch 30 seconds of ******** before Elsa sings Let It Go for them.

D.

Both mine learned what an add is in about 30sec from the laptop and iPad, so i doubt it will have any affect.

ads should only be true where they get the most attraction, on the desktop and/or mobile...

Not steaming only devices like Apple TV/Roku etc..

I can't even believe to understand why Google have never thought of targeting only to certain devices, vs making life easier for the end user depending on device they are on..

It can easily be done....... We do it to all because its just too much effort on their part. Plus, anything for extra profit.

In this day and age of technology, and we still can't come up with a way to do this ?

Unbelievable...

Country is now determined by IP address rather than Apple TV settings...hate this

Also, you can now subscribe to channel from the app yet you can no longer add videos to favorites... Crappy implementation

over and over[/I] before every video.

Which is exactly the point. One way or the other, now you have that automobile company or that movie forcibly entered into your head. It increases their recall value whenever you are in a position to make an automobile or movie purchase. That's just pure gold for marketers. Why would they be some anonymous ad that ran once 6 weeks ago that no one remembers?

I gladly paid Apple $25/year so I can listen to iTunes radio without ads. I would do the same for YouTube. Give people the option to pay $25/year for ad-free youtube. I've heard 1 million youtube views generates $10K. That's 1 cent per view. I'm happy to pay the penny directly and not watch the ads.

But your plan will not scale for future growth - unless Youtube jacks up subscription prices accordingly in the future, which will not be popular.

If 1 million views today generate $10K, 10 million views will generate $100K, but a subscriber will still be paying the same $25 or whatever per year, regardless of how many ever views there are.

May be a good reason then to buy a car, but is it really ?? or just an annoyance seeing the same ad 100 times over ?

Bit like Free to Air when u think about it.

Even though it may not be profitable in the end, isn't this how we all make money ?...... advertise, but if you wanna get rid of the ad's, pay up $xx dollars..

It is definitely an annoyance at the time you watch the ad. But 6 months, or a year later when you are thinking of a new car to buy, you will recall that name and head over to their website to check out their models. The human brain will apply that annoyance to that ad if you ever see it again, but not to the brand that the marketer was trying to drill into your head.

Oh noes!
My time is more important to me then those youtube "creators" lol. So that's why i always use AdBlock!
It's not my problem if they don't get paid enough. They should get another job, or should i say a real job? :D

Wow. Just wow. The entitlement of some people astonishes me.

----------

Why the hell would anyone want to see video advertisements on Apple TV ?

Don't they make enough for users on the web ?

I can understand Hulu Plus doing this, but Youtube ? Google's not got as much money as we think.

You realize that content creators are the one's that decide whether to show ads. And many disabled their videos on Apple TV because ads weren't available. By enabling ads, Youtube on Apple TV now has a much larger library of videos available.

What? Youtube does target ads based on the platform. Content creators also decide whether their videos will be available on STBs or not and they can decide whether to show ads on each of those platforms. Youtube's ad system is not showing desktop ads on Apple TV.

Skimmed through the five pages so far, but didn't see any discussion on an issue that I've had with the YouTube app and AppleTV since I bought it:

Does this update allow for the watching of live streams from YouTube?

I did see someone mention that purchased movies are unavailable to watch via the AppleTV, so I don't have much hope for being able to watch live streamed events.

A steaming turd you say? I'll go out of my way not to update. Otherwise I'll have to see how my AdTrap can deal with this new version.

But can you really avoid the new Youtube app? Some users say that it gets updated separately from the main software update that can be blocked?

And related to this: does the apple tv keep asking for you to update the software if you have the software update off? Or does it stay silent?

This has never worked for me...

The "update automatically" does noting.... I have it on, but always need to check for updates manually.....

No point in a setting that doesn't even do anything... Have tried a hard reset and still nothing. Unless, it only checks once a week or something, by then, its far too late. Why would u wanna wait a week to download an update 5 days ago ?

I absolutely hate the new YouTube app. You have to sign in to activate the history feature. I don't want my account history available for my whole family to see.

I meant that i dont want the update at all so i can use the old add free Youtube.

Three words, one self-censored:

EFF.
That.
Noise.

I might watch a video ad all the way through once, to get to a video I really want to see right then. The second time it shows, I'll hit the "skip after 5 seconds" button. After that, I leave YouTube alone for a day or two.

Ad is made unskippable? I go out of my way to AVOID that product.

I don't think you can; my updates are not auto but lo and behold, I had the update the next time when I used it again. On the upside my AdTrap seems to be working - zero ads so far.

Were you on the latest firmware when the Youtube update happened? I´m trying to find out if Apple TVs that are in older firmware get the Youtube update or not.

Mine is now downgraded to 5.3 and the youtube app doesnt get updated. Im just getting hammered with the firmwareupdate since 5.3 doesnt have the autoupdate off option.

Off subject, but AdTrap sounds interesting. Can you tell a little about how it has worked for you, pros/cons?
