Were the videos HD? You have to pick a lower resolution. No app update can fix it, if you want to play HD videos. iOS devices only have hardware support for mpeg4, not vp9.

You have to pick non HD videos to get mpeg4 format videos.

Whoa, even when not playing HD?

I guess the app really is causing major drain then because even users are reporting background usage when not playing video

its a problem google still didnt fix with ios 11.2, it goes up & down on my 7 plus, gets hot & drains then cools & stops randomly sometimes all within the same video. never had a drain issue like that before, but only youtube is doing it. even low power mode doesnt mitigate it.

I used the youtube app this morning on my 6s plus just to test again and not only it drain battery, it literally KILL the battery. I was at 73% and after 15 mn videos my phone was at 10% and my phone was really hot.

It is a major issue, so major that Apple should refuse the app on the app store until a fix comes.

The update to the app which was pushed last night (Sunday in UK) seems to have improved things, streaming 10 mins of 1080p video used 4% of battery (iPhone 7+ iOS 11.1.1 on wifi with BT audio) and didn't make the phone feel like it was about to explode like it did last week.

Still not brilliant though. One step forward, two steps back.

The new YouTube update made a huge difference in battery life for me. Where it used to drain about 30% an hour while streaming 1080p, now it drains less than half of that.

Yeah I think the most recent update on YouTube improves things significantly. There is no mention of bug fixes in the change comment but they must have done something to plug a few leaks.
