As said numerous times already. Google was doing a trial run with this new design for months now. You were probably randomly selected to have the new design during this period. Yesterday was the official release of this update to the public.

Not sure how official this release is because some of us have updated and only change that was received was a new app icon. The app is exactly the same as before for me.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Question to video specialists:

When I upload a video clip via iPhone 6 (settings, camera: 1080p60) it goes fine with those 60 full pictures per second (this works since some weeks). When I edit some clips on iPhone 6 with iMovie and upload to YT then we'll have only 30fps. Why? Did I miss anything?

Likely iMovie is set to export as 30fps when choosing YouTube as export destination.
Knock on Apple's door for missing the bus on the news that YouTube supports all sorts of nice changes.

Like 4K (hell even 8K)... *cough cough* Apple TV...

Hey it's free. They didn't need to put out an app at all. How many Apple apps make it to other platforms?
If you really believe YouTube is free, you don't understand how Google is one of the wealthiest companies on this planet either, do you?
You pay by viewing ads.

Also, just because something is free (if it were) it's not open to critique?
Weird thinking.

I can't stand the app for one reason. Each time in Safari and look up a video, it asks me if I want to watch in the YouTube app. No thanks. Stop asking. If I wanted to open it in YouTube, I'd open the app myself.
Yeah, app deep linking is rearing its ugly face.

I wish I could customize that feature, but hey, options are bad and just confusing! /s

The description in the App Store mentions the redesign, it was being tested on some users early so if you want it you should either wait or you could try reinstalling it.

Yet, there's no Picture in Picture Support.

Burn YouTube! Burn!

Yep. YouTube, like many apps out there, have the ability to conduct AB testing. This allows them to enable different UI, features, etc within the app for a pre-determined percentage of users. In this case, you (and me too) were chosen to see the new UI while they monitored performance and usage. Uber also does this.

Since the app icon is part of the core app and tightly controlled by Apple, that part didn't get updated until Google made it official and released the app update.

I'm not seeing the new UI even after the update that's where I'm confused. The only difference is a new updated app icon.

Oops! I'm sorry I misunderstood. Well that just makes no sense at all then. Unless they're running another test to see if people prefer using the OLD UI. :)

I'm don't mind the new update but what happen to offline mode? I was able to get this new design months ago but a couple weeks ago I got another update that reverted back to the old design. Now I got the new design again and offline mode is missing.

I think all the people complaining about the "sea of red" are on the smaller screen? On the 6 plus it shows more of the video section. Google design the app for +5" screen so anything smaller looks like it's full of the red banner.

After several months of testing and tweaking, YouTube has finally released the redesigned version of its iOS app, taking cues from its Material Design-inspired Android counterpart. The updated app also comes with in-app video editing tools to make videos.

The new app is divided into three sections: Home, Subscriptions and Account. Home, like the YouTube web homepage, delivers suggestions and features videos from YouTube accounts that a user may have viewed recently. Subscriptions is a stream of videos from YouTube accounts a user may subscribe to and Account allows you to access History, Likes, the Watch later feature and Playlists.

While the app was updated today, it's slowly propagating through the App Store.

YouTube for iOS is available in the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I hate the new the update. It looks like the android. I liked the old YouTube better. Is there a was to downgrade

The same thing happened to me. I had the new icon but the old UI. After a couple of hours i had the new version without me doing anything. I have no idea why this happened o_O

The YouTube app has been a sore spot ever since Apple's licensing agreement ended and Google took over the app development.

I certainly would not want to use the abomination I'm seeing in screenshots all over the place. Third party alternatives are looking pretty damn good.

I'm sorry but as someone who uses this Site constantly everyday.....I find it atrocious. The color is too bright and there is no PIP but I can get over that easily. The problem is that the functionality is just terrible IMO. Everything is buried behind pages and other menus. My subscriptions don't show the names of the people so if they change their Picture I would have no idea who I'm looking at until I click. When you do click it takes you to their page so you can no longer just check quickly , now you gotta go back. I'm really not liking this and hoping it will change back. At least give me an option.

Yes like just about every other free app out there I am aware that your personal data is being sold up the river. If your not happy with the privacy policy then don't use the app and stop moaning about the aesthetics of the app.

I'm okay with Youtube getting my viewing data, so I "pay" properly, but still want a decent experience.

Mind blowing.

Nowhere did I say I feel forced to use Youtube, don't read too much into my sentences.

1/4 my ip screen is that ugly red bar wtf, use safari for youtube for now until gg remove that stupid design !!

Awful new UI, the most important thing has been completely ruined - the user experience. It's all over the place and so much worst than the highly useable previous version.

Any good methods or apps to control playback speed on iOS? That's the single most important feature for a lot of people at my company.

Awful update. Perhaps I'm missing something, but instead of a nice vertical text list of all my subscriptions, I now have to scroll thumbnails horizontally? Super annoying.

I'm hoping someone has an answer to this. Ever since the redesign my subscription feed in the iOS app does not update. New videos from subscribed channels show up just fine but when I clear watched subscription videos on the desktop site they don't remove in the app. I am left with hundreds of old videos, making it hard to find ones I haven't watched. I even deleted the app and thought I would just use it on the mobile site but it also acts the same way. This is driving me crazy and I can't find a way to fix it!

Okay but when can can I picture-in-picture on my iPad?

No split view - no PIP. Go home YouTube.

And still no pip. I'm looking at you too Netflix.

I'm wondering if this will ever be supported in the official YouTube app.

There are a few third party apps (ProTube,YouPlayer, Tubex) which do offer this Slide Over/Split View, Picture in Picture (PiP) and even have other great features (play audio in background, remove ads - ProTube only). CornerTube, Moldavite only offer Picture in Picture (PiP).

My favorite is definitely ProTube.

I know Tubex does but I still like the official YouTube app the best. I think Google's hesitant to add these new features because it might somehow harm ad revenue.
