my iPad updated the app but its still the same design, this has to be on the server side because i had it on my iPhone before it updated.

Usability on the iPad has definitely taken a step backwards. Particularly the user tab where you are looking for your viewing history and such, the layout wastes so much space.

I can only hope that since they've adopted this phone style layout that it means they're working on an auto layout version and a split view update is incoming.

I have a theory though, and I hope I'm wrong, that they'll never enable PiP because it will stop them being able to serve ads. Does anyone know if this is the case? I hope not cos I hate the damn custom player they use in this app.

The design itself isn't an improvement over the old one in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. Finding subscriptions now requires an extra tap.

That's strange. I've had the new Youtube app for a few weeks now. Can't remember exactly when it auto downloaded to my phone, but certainly a while before the new iPhones came out as its on my iPhone 6.

I wonder if it's being deployed staggered across different countries (I'm in the UK)?

I remember thinking at the time it was much harder to navigate and the UI was/is confusing and ugly.

I got the new look this morning, before I actually installed the update. The assets must have been hidden inside the previous update.

Am I the only one who has been using this update for at least a month now, maybe two? How is this new news??? I've been hating this change for a while lol. Although not long ago my app reverted back to an older version and I was happy. Same thing happened on my iPad too. Did this happen to anyone else? Were they testing it on certain users or something?? I'm very confused.

I'm in the same boat! I've been dealing with this for a month so I'm shocked to see an article dated today saying this is new and everybody up in arms.

In my humble opinion, material design is much more pleasing and cohesive than the mess Sir I've has made of iOS.
It may be more cohesive, even if I don't personally think so, this is still really poor design. The top bar on iPad takes up 15% of the screen when it needed 5%. That's just poor design.

Add that it lacks support for all new iOS 9 features and it's rather a silly release. Add none of the features users are asking for and make the design worse. Yeah, that's a 1 star rating in the making.

Very odd. There's really no change in the iPad app... only iPhone. Unless I'm missing something.. There's not even landscape view especially for the 6 Plus.

What's more odd is that I upgraded my iPhone 6s Plus YouTube app and it still looks the same as the prior version. Not a single drop of red. I went back to the App Store to make sure it was updated and it is. I still have PIP and everything is as it were before. My app has a new icon. But that's it!

Can someone explain what the hell is going on???

I updated this app, but the design is still 1 or 2 years old. The only thing that is new is white icon.

This is strange but it looks exactly the same for me. I guess I'll delete and re-install and see what happens.

After playing with it I come to one conclusion. There's only one thing about this version that improves on the old one. All my subscriptions finally show up in the list. No more does it cut them off after a certain amount and only go down to the Ps. But I wish I could organize them and have my most favorite channels (Of MY choosing. Not based on some stupid algorithm) at the top of the list. That's all I'd ask for so I can have my GameGrumps, LazyGameReviews, RedLetterMedia, PreRec, SuperBeardBros, NerdCubed, Continue?, JonTron, etc channels at the top.

Other than that, it is very imperfect. No PIP and 3D Touch at this point is a really bad move. They've had plenty of time to implement them. The red is very bright but I'll get used to it. Trying to pull to refresh while on a channel page is near impossible on my 5C. (I'd hate to have a 4S. You'd probably see one video at a time in the list.)

This is probably related to why many of us were getting the update before it updated. There is something really funky going on here.

I dislike the design but even putting that aside. No support for PiP, no support for SlideOver/Side-by-Side and burying playlists and favourites even deeper are all sins I cannot forgive.
Anyone who's followed the development of the IOS app over the years surely didn't ever really expect them to support PiP... They don't even do that on Android, where it's equally possible (the Twitch app for Android does it, for example). It would require switching away from their custom video player widget to use Apple's standard player, and they just don't want to do that.

And it's not only the iOS 9 features... I wonder why they still don't use the native iOS share sheet. It really sucks not to be able to share to FB Messenger or WhatsApp by using their extensions. It's really odd since every other Google app does have support for extensions. This is actually the thing that annoys me most about the YouTube app.

Youtube is slow and has an ugly GUI but I love it for one thing. I don't have to fiddle with iOS screen rotation to get a a full screen video. Its the only app that does this afaik

I haven't updated and I got the new design. I actually got the new design before the update showed in the store so I'm thinking its server side.
The same with me! I was using the app, everything was fine and then after a few minutes I came back, and the app was all different.
I miss the sidebar the most. Does anyone know, if the sidebar can be somehow reachable?

I'm glad we're all pretty much in agreement that this redesign sucks balls.

What I wanted from a YouTube update was increased functionality (like the ability to easily clear my watched videos, or easily add videos to my watch later playlist), not just some visual reorganising of things which just end up standing my YouTube workflow…

I hope there's a way to roll back this app to the previous version, but then it is Apple, so I'm guessing probably not…

Question to video specialists:

When I upload a video clip via iPhone 6 (settings, camera: 1080p60) it goes fine with those 60 full pictures per second (this works since some weeks). When I edit some clips on iPhone 6 with iMovie and upload to YT then we'll have only 30fps. Why? Did I miss anything?
