and point #2 would be amazing (although I don't know if it would work over EDGE).

That was my first concern. WiFi, no problem, but unless AT&T gets a better HSDPA system, video conferencing might be horrid. I know that many phone manufacturers are now forced by the courts to stop carrying 3G chipsets soon due to an impending lawsuit brought on by another company over Samsung (who I believe makes the 3G chips?). Until then, I don't know what that will mean for HSDPA/3G/EDGE, etc.

I believe YouTube is taking video questions for the next Democratic Party debate. That's how important YouTube has become.

It's not for kids anymore.

Yeah, that is the only platform I use YouTube for these days, politics and social issues. It's the skateboarding dogs and video blogs of random people (and if I see one more Paris Hilton/Lindsay Lohan/Britney Spears Youtube video my eyes will bleed lol) I take issue with.

My only concern are the comments people submit on youtube. As someone who has studied Social and I/O Psych, one thing is apparent and that is the negative consequences that online anonymity has on social outlets. More often than not, people use the anonymity of the internet to post nasty comments, slander each other, and just tear each other apart (this is disturbingly apparent on the politically oriented videos on YouTube, some NASTY things are said).

I also heard that they will be taking questions from YouTube viewers during the debate, which I am certain will be filtered. Yet from the examples of comments I have seen on youtube, filtering might leave nothing to be left to ask lol.

videoconferencing? I don't think so.

I think people suggesting videoconferencing on the iPhone are overlooking one obvious point... the camera needs to be on the back side, so that like on any other digital camera, the screen can be used as a viewfinder. Videoconferencing just doesn't make sense unless Apple decides to alienate the still camera users just for the people who want video chat. Or of course they use a camera on both sides. As if...

The way it works is a YouTube member records a question and uploads it to Youtube. Then the debate sifts through all the submissions and picks the ones that are relevent and shows them to the candidates who in turn answer the question.
This way real-time filtering won't be necessary. The questions are pre-selected.

I think its inevitable that iChat is coming (firstly basic chat, then ultimately video in a rev 2 or 3 of the iPhone). The question is when Apple will introduce it.

If the iPhone had iChat (sans video), there would be no need for SMS.

OTOH, there would be no need for MMS or email either, since you can send pictures, audio, videos, documents, and other files via iChat, which is probably why they left it off of the initial release.

How about thinking for yourself for a change, and keeping the personal insults out of the dialog.
How about reading your own 'freakin posts? You stated.....
The world is full of idiots (look at American Idol and all the lame, talentless reality shows that are popular, need I say more?), so this just proves that people have no taste.
I think *you* made it quite personal with that statement.

My *point*, once again, is W<insert "who" instead of "what">TF are you to judge what is tasteless and what is not and yeah....I find it 'kinda funny when guys like come to the boards with your self-important attitude laying down your lame smack. LOL

Do you think Apple just *might* do their homework when it comes to stuff like this or do you think they arbitrarily just add widgets that people could care less about? Check out the headline for this topic and you will notice

Notice how there are substantially more "positives" than "negatives."

Bottom line.....if YouTube is not your thing; I'm down with that and I actually respect that but *don't* come to the boards and say that everyone who thinks it's a good idea adding the YouTube widget is essentially an American Idol-watching idiot.

Capesh?

Lancetx, my Pioneer Elite is a CRT. It's specs are maxed out at 1080i. A few years ago, CRT HD sets were still state of the art, and this was one of them.

My original post wasn't targeted at you specifically, and I stated in my post that didn't apply to CRTs, only to fixed pixel HDTVs (which are 98% of the HDTVs sold in stores today) such as Plasmas, LCDs, and Microdisplays such as DLP. I had an HD CRT RPTV up until recently myself before it finally died and it was a fine set. But as I'm sure you know, those types of HDTVs have been a dying breed for quite some time, and they're almost impossible to find new at retail now.

The other party could have a fun time looking at your feet as you video conference on your iPhone ;)

Clearly you would need some sort of method for the camera to point in two different directions. Hey, it's not impossible. If anyone can do it, Apple can.

You say tomato, I say tomahto, either way we both have points. While there is SOME content on youtube that may merit its distinction, is it worthy enough as a "Super Secret Feature" on a product that Apple seems to be staking its reputation on? NO.

I agree that we both have points, however neither of the comments that I've emboldened are anywhere near accurate.

How so? Youtube is on Apple TV and the iPhone, that's an awful lot of investment, putting a website on two new innovative products that Apple claims are "revolutionary". I'd say that's part and parcel to putting a bit of their reputation on the line.

Wow, you truly are a class act aren't you? You might want to read Macrumors' guidelines on addressing people on these boards, or they may just enlighten you on their own. Grow up please. Grow up.

Again, as you seem to not get it, just because the majority of people may find it interesting or "positive" doesn't mean it's a good idea. The "mob mentality" is illogical, and my comment about "thinking for yourself" was in direct relation to that fact. Don't follow the sheep. I thought Apple prided itself on the "Think Different" approach, doesn't that mean going against the obvious and thinking outside the box?

...and thanks for proving my point about the Internet bringing out the nasty in people. Learn how to address people with respect, as the saying goes, "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar"....

Capesh?

like it or not....

and i do, this is a massive feature.

youtube is the biggest website on the net, bar the top 3 search portals. . it offers a short, sharp fix of whatever your pleasure. now you can watch on your way to work, waiting for a train and countless others places you wouln't mind that quick fix.

i don't know if other phones can do this. or care. as, if it was this seamlessly executed, we'd have all heard about it. as with the iPod UI + iTunes, this is the kind of feature/experience that eliminates the competition.

even when the others can do the same, it's just not....the same. imo

Why not?

Yeah.....my bad. Next time I'll say something along the lines of, "The world is full of idiots and anyone who supports the addition of the YouTube widget to the iPhone is an idiot." I suppose that would be the *proper* way to address someone such as yourself. LOL

Now we have found some common ground! I respect that statement and I think it has some merit. See....I'm not such a bad guy.

Yes it is. Its going away, thats where it is going. Adobe has no intention of proliferating the Flash product now that they've acquired it. Believe it, because web developers (like me) understand this. If they weren't so secretive this would be more well known, but the consensus is "Learn CSS..."

Nice try bending my words around to fit your point. My comment was also not directed at anyone personally, maybe you should get a tougher skin.

You might want to do some squats "Skinnylegs", as you don't have much of a leg to stand on.

I see where you're going and I 'kinda agree. Apple is bowing to the masses by including direct access to YouTube via an in-your-face widget. I don't know but I'm thinking they wanted to provide easy access to video and since YouTube is huge they chose them.

Dude....you have just earned my respect because that is an *awesome* comeback and I truly mean that. I'm not being sarcastic.....really I'm not. I'm LMAO as I type.

Anyway.....

I'm pretty sure Apple chose a YouTube widget because the site is so darn popular (for better or for worse). I will admit that they didn't take the "high road" by doing this but they do have shareholders to keep happy 'ya know.

Honestly, I probably won't tap the YouTube widget that often but it doesn't bother me by being there. To me, a YouTube widget is 'kinda like having a MySpace widget.

Actually, that was exactly what I was suggesting.

So, what you're saying is that the people who don't think like you are sheep? If the majority (in this case) thinks that it's a good idea to have a dedicated YouTube app on the iPhone but you don't then the majority (in this case) is wrong? That's thinking pretty highly of yourself, is it not?

The fact that Apple could convince Google to convert the entire YouTube catalog to H.264 (and Google agreed to do it) speaks volumes about the power of both companies, and just how closely they're working together. That's "thinking different" as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't be surprised to see GoogleApps becoming part of .Mac in the very near future, accessible through the iPhone. Besides, when you look at the history of the iPod, all of the really cool stuff came much later; that's the beauty of having a product with such powerful software.

BTW your Bush analogy was quite good, except for one small flaw; recent history has shown us that Apple products tend to be pretty good, whereas presidents named Bush tend not to be.:D
