100% dead on. iChat is not on the phone because simply is not necessary. The SMS UI basically IS ichat, and there is a reason for it.

The "session" style messaging makes it even more like ichat as well.

Besides, who wants random instant messages on their phone that will usually go unanswered when you're not paying attention. If you are paying attention to the phone (ie: using the internet) then texting will work just fine and basically function the same way.

I remember a previous leopard pic somewhere that had a airport icon next to one of their contacts. People wondered if that meant some-kind of iphone link. Maybe Apple will provide somekind of iphone -> ichat gateway via sms?

Sorry if this has been asked b4 but I dont have time to go thru 1 million theards but, what if your on someones MySpace page and they have a YouTube video on their page either as a theirs or as a comment someone left them. Will Safari and Youtube work together and play it?

Actually you couldn't be more wrong. You couldn't POSSIBLY be more wrong.

YouTUBE began as and still is incredibly useful for uploading and sharing video media of any kind, whether they be personal vids, amateur films, or for sharing VERY important public media that cannot be found on your nightly news.

YouTUBE has a lot of useless content yes, but so does the internet itself. Is that a reason to leave the internet off the iPhone, because of potential useless content?

Edit: Furthermore, I use YouTUBE constantly, and NOT to watch dogs skateboard.

You say tomato, I say tomahto, either way we both have points. While there is SOME content on youtube that may merit its distinction, is it worthy enough as a "Super Secret Feature" on a product that Apple seems to be staking its reputation on? NO.

And on another note has anyone heard of the functionality of ical on the iphone?
This is something that I am curious about as well. I live and die by my calendar and I'm hoping the integrate seamlessly.
The world is full of idiots (look at American Idol and all the lame, talentless reality shows that are popular, need I say more?), so this just proves that people have no taste. It's lame.
Dude.....you need to take some Prozac then kick back and watch some YouTube videos. :p WTF appointed you judge and jury in terms of tasteful and tasteless programming. LMAO American Idol is popular because it's *fun*. You might want to have some fun yourself one day.

One thing no one has asked will be how fast YouTube streaming will be on Cingular/AT&T's network using edge (aside from WiFi) and how the interface will be on the iPhone...

People snort coke and drop X for fun. If everyone jumped off bridges would you assume it's "fun" because everyone's doing it? How about thinking for yourself for a change, and keeping the personal insults out of the dialog.

Look, I'm not going to argue over whether Youtube is a great site, people have various tastes (or lack thereof) than others. My point was that of all the features Apple could have put on the iPhone (and apparently on the :apple:TV), why YouTube? Cause it's "fun"? Why would Apple risk it's reputation on "fun"?

More over, everyone seems to have glossed over my point about iChat video conferencing (maybe cause it's a valid point?) and instead nitpicked my little comment about YouTube. IChat would have been perfect with video conferencing on the iPhone, as it would have also been a tie in for businesses to use the iPhone, allowing employee purchase of said device for practical purposes such as video conferencing via the iPhone on business travels, thereby bypassing the possible need for a laptop and equipment just for conferencing. Also, non-Apple users would be introduced to a program through the iPhone that would rival MSN Messenger and other online messenger utilities, possibly showing them how a chat program is done right and enticing them more over to the Apple side, just as iTunes did with the iPod. Think about it before you slam me, I have a point. With WiFi (and AT&T's future deployment of faster HSDPA networking) the bandwidth for video conferencing is there.

PS A lot of people voted for Bush, does that make them right? American Idol is talentless eye candy for the mindless masses and so is YouTube.

Dreaming?

The elite few that have received their iPhones seemingly guard it with their lives. The iPhone has been in an incredibly small amount of number of hands in comparison to the release of just about any techno-gadget I can think of before it goes on sale to the masses. Secrecy, even at less than ten days, is paramount, and there is still so, so much we do not know about the iphone.

I just find it difficult to believe, as incredible as the iPhone already is, and I emphasize that I think it is indeed incredible, that there aren't a few more surprises waiting to be released. I really think there are a couple of "One more thing(s).." to be mentioned.

I thought the extended battery life and glass touch plate was a nice eleventh hour announcement, and now YouTube at 11:58.

Is there anyone out there that really, truly believes that there will be NO MORE surprises between now and the 29th? (I know there doesn't need to be any more, but I think there will be at least one more...maybe a biggie.)

I love the speculation about an iSight camera facing the user while looking at the touchscreen. (Yes, a second camera other that the 2MP on the back.) Could it be the home button? (Fingerprints...nah, they wouldn't bother an isight much, would they, wipe it off during preview.)

If an isight...here are some apps I would love to see:

1) PhotoBooth on your iPhone (Who wouldn't want that. Lots of fun!)
2) Video iChat (The big crowd pleaser.)
3) YouTube Upload (capture live video & upload to your YouTube account)

;)

Id have thought Apple would be crazy not to implement some kind of syncing of YouTube content via iTunes.. lets say that todays featured videos and also your favourites get synced to the iPhone via your Mac or PC on docking, to save bandwidth and automatically have fresh content on the iPhone all of the time.

I guess it would just be an issue of YouTube allowing their content to be downloaded as opposed to streamed.

Thank you, exactly my point. THAT would be more interesting and fitting than just YouTube...

I wouldn't think so, it won't do that for iTV... unless youtube starts detecting browsers and switches somehow... which they wont... wait until the transition is over and they will all be h264 by next year.

Again thats what you think.... I think this is a nice red succulent Tomato... this is a great feature worthy of space on the desktop...

Think ...this is TV on the iPhone nothing more nothing less a GREAT feature

I for one def think we're not done hearing announcements. I think 802.11n is a layup...

Wasn't there an Apple patent a while back that had a camera behind the lcd...or am I on LSD

This has long been my suspicion, that there is an isight camera hidden under the top of the display. Think about how tiny they are, and how unnoticable they are behind the black plastic at the top of your imac/macbook. I could definitely see this being the really big surprise. This also may be why we've seen nothing about the camera application. I also agree that it is highly suspicious that iChat was left off the iphone. Think about how hard Apple pushes iChat. I think your point #1 about Photobooth is definitely possible, and point #2 would be amazing (although I don't know if it would work over EDGE). Point #3 might not be doable, because I don't know how the encoding would work. But anyway this is my great hope for the iPhone... a secret iSight camera would be a great surprise!

I think its inevitable that iChat is coming (firstly basic chat, then ultimately video in a rev 2 or 3 of the iPhone). The question is when Apple will introduce it.

To all those saying youtube is for kids:

- how many of you have watched presidential debates on YouTube?
- how many of you have watched full tv shows on YouTube?
- how many of you have watched full movies on YouTube?
- how many of you watched videos of the latest news around the world on YouTube
- how many of you watched clips of sporting events that you can't find anywhere else on YouTube
- how many of you have watched instructional videos on topics like how to properly string your nylon string guitar on YouTube
- how many of you have watched iphone reviews on YouTube
- how many of you have watched videos of friends and family on YouTube

I use youtube for all of the above and more. Just because I would rather find the video material I want when I want it doesn't mean I'm a bored teenager. YouTube for the iPhone is really under-appreciated..

Gee, Apple cant win. First people moan that web 'applications' arent good enough because they dont offer the full iPhone experience, and yet Apple are adding applications and people moan because we can just access YouTube via the browser (which you cant anyway)
Totally. And most of the folks coming in to piss/moan are newbies. Lots of troll-types who are probably on Verizon/Microsoft payroll, out making trouble just to try and thwart the momentum that Apple has with its new toy.

Native iPhone apps that integrate with websites is exactly why I am excited about the phone. While its a shame this is limited to Apple at the moment, anything like this is a welcome feature. I would personally shed tears if we were to see a Gmail and Google Reader client :D
To me it's pretty obvious why Apple is keeping 3rd-party developers relegated to the internet only and not have their apps/widgets directly on the phone: containing and controlling the "wow" factor of the iPhone. If they didn't, it would become the same situation of OS X's widgets: thousands with no control of quality or quantity. Apple's are some of the best, but there are some great Widgets and their number is legion. Apple doesn't want that for their phone.

If they control: Then there's 12 widget/app buttons on front and everytime a new feature comes out from Apple... wow. "Cool. Look what else my iPhone does". (Today -- now we know about YouTube!)

If they don't control: People write thousands of widgets/apps and no longer does it matter what Apple releases, it's lost among thousands of other smaller bits of software that do the same or similar things.

It's important that Apple keep giving people reasons to buy the iPhone. Each new Apple feature needs to be considered a big deal. By leaving 3rd parties on the 'net, they're cutting out the competition. Apple wants for their Applications and Widgets to matter.

I believe YouTube is taking video questions for the next Democratic Party debate. That's how important YouTube has become.

It's not for kids anymore.
