It sucks because I couldn't use it immediately, it wasn't obvious enough, not because it doesn't look nice. And... I'm swedish so I love Scania Auto and Volvo just not the game I have to play with websites trying to use them....

Well, the whole thing is about getting an experience, not just information. If you want just to get info, order a brochure or just check out the specs on their regular Saab site. But this kind of site is about much more than that. And that's the point I was trying to make. That Flash can give you this kind of experience that a lot of other methods don't, including Javascript, Ajax, etc. BTW, this Saab site won quite a number of design awards.

But let me ask you this. Are there ANY Flash sites out there that you like? Seriously, I want to know.

Wow. Seems like you got some major problems going on. Who know what kind of crap you got on your computer. I got a Linux machine, a PC laptop, 3 Macs, 5 browsers (IE, Safari, Firefox, Camino and Opera) and they all run just fine on mine. Every platform, every browser. These are well set up sites from some pretty big companies. These sites are pretty well tested. I seriously doubt that they would release them if they cause "every" computer to crash. Just because your computer craps out on you, doesn't mean it's Flash, it probably means you got a screwed up computer (viruses, worms, screwed up system files, who knows what). I had a friend whose computer crashed every time he visited a site using Java's applets. Guess what. His Java was corrupt. Not the sites.

Just a regular ole MackBook Pro, running the newest version of Camino and OSX. I did have Gmail and Macrumors open in tabs. I was also using iTunes and Adium. I suppose that specific combination could have caused one of the sites to panic.

 I do have tons of viruses because they needed a home, also I was using a 3rd party wifi router for no reason at all, and I had my laptop sitting in a pool of water because it was really hot so I thought I would cool it off.

I noticed there's an "iTunes Store" setting now between Network and Screensaver that I don't recall before the update. If you look at Apple's Apple TV website tour, it's not there - so I'm thinking this is new.

ETA: there are a bunch of other enhancements described in this Apple Discussions thread.

I was just going to ask the same question.I saw the iTunes Store setting also.
Is this new ?

Yah, like I said before, vector video is the only thing it should be for.

[Update:] and this one to name a few http://www.homestarrunner.com

[Update2:] I guess I don't like flash being used as a UI, I don't like being forced to watch transitions. Just like dvd menu's piss me off, blueray menus are better but still... People don't go online for an experience... they go for news, streamed video, and myspace stalking, people are impatient, they don't want to be forced to wait... remove the wait and long transitions maybe id like it as a UI

Funny, I'd rather have YouTube than iChat. Makes perfect sense to me.

Why? That's illogical. Is it not a PHONE, used for COMMUNICATION? Does iChat not count as a form of communication? And would it not open non-Mac users up into a Mac OS program, thus possibly exposing people to more Mac software? Youtube doesn't make any sense.

Youtube doesn't make any sense.

thats crazy talk, youtube is one of, if not, the largest web site in the world! Theres ample content from music videos, to tv shows, to people just mucking around. Its a great feature to add! Who needs 30gb ipod when you can stream music/video str8 thru to your phone from youtube? :D

Let me see if get this right. Saab site sucks.
Weebls stuff & Homestarrunner good. . . . Ok . . . .

So I WAS right. There IS no accounting for taste.
Thanks for the update. I just wanted to know where you were coming from. Now I know.
So I guess you really do like those cute little Greeting Card sites, huh?.

Good to know.

Rate Plans And Iphone Allocations

Spoke earlier to a manager at one of the ATT stores in BOYNTON BEACH FLORIDA, he says that they are expecting 250 Iphones, and that most of the south Florida stores will be getting between 200 and 250 units.
He also said that the rate plans will be the same as what Att has for all its other phones, ( this was verified by two store employees at the DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA store, just south of BOYNTON BEACH) they are under the impression that the data plan may combine the unlimited internet for $ 30.00 per month and the unlimited messaging at $ 19.99 per month. The rate plans start at $ 39.99 for 450 minutes and go to 199.99 for 6000 minutes, they all have rollover minutes and unlimited nights and weekends, as well as unlimited calling to all Att phones. They will wave the activation fee if you port over your cell phone number to ATT. They are expecting long lines, they will have extra staff on hand, and plenty of security.

the staff at both stores are certain that the rate plans wont change very much at all the info for the BOYNTON BEACH store is.

Greeting cards sites? What're you refering to? I've never sent or seen these as greeting cards....(seriously.. huh?) I watch vector videos because they're funny, not because I'm trying to get lost in an experience that won awards for looking good.

The vast majority of people want flash for videos and games only, not UI.

Don't get mad because people don't like slow loading UI with long transitions.

If you had asked me "Which slow loading pages that look good do you like?" then my answer would have been different....

[Update:] I do like Maybach and SAAB now that I know how to use it, but even Maybach's UI isn't very user friendly, mainly because its at the bottom...

sounds really good. but whenever i go to the iphone page, since the update today, on both safari and firefox, if i try to play a video it brings up a message saying please download quicktime...but im on a mac and i definately have quicktime...help me? anyone?

I have seen this before, on Apple's site, as well.
I only notice this when their servers are getting crushed - when Leopard previews hit (post Keynote) and any iPhone info.
Now, why it says a QT DL is needed, when I have the most recent QT Pro, is beyond me.
Just wrote that off as a glitch and checked the site later to find all working as expected.

A nice 12th feature would have been to be able to get on the iTunes store directly from your iPhone. That way you could a song that you heard in the car instantly and not forget to download it later. Or if you were in the airport and your flight was late you could easily download a TV show or movie to watch. This is something that should deffinately be in the next version.

What about a mystery 13, 14, 15 and 16th application? There's still some room on that screen!

I like the way you think! How about an Apple Special Announcement before the release.

I just don't get why having ichat on your phone is such a big deal. The iphone has a great Text Messaging layout (more like ichat than your traditional cell phone txt messaging options), and with all contacts from your mac synced to your phone you could very easily send people messages via text message to their ichat/aim accounts. So the actual "program of ichat" seems a bit over-kill. Am I missing something else?

And on another note has anyone heard of the functionality of ical on the iphone? I know it has the same sorta calander/contacts like we have on our ipods but is the ical program going to be something that will truly be user friendly where if i change an event on the iphone it will update on my laptop after being synced and vice-versa?

And one more thing... (and I know this is a like beating a dead horse)...but don't several other phones have gps map type functions? I seem to remember seeing a sprint ad not to long ago talking about this. It just seems like this will be the icing on the cake for me. I have seriously been thinking about purchasing a gps device for all the traveling i do...but if it were on my phone it just seems like this would be the all encompassing package. Now if this technology isn't really available on a device that is so small I would understand (as it seems that other gps devices that you can purchase /tom tom, garmen etc/ are much bigger) but going back to the sprint cell phone ad... Am i just crazy?

that being said I'm looking forward to June 29th and seeing all the functions of this amazing device.

? seriously... seriously. Just because it's one of the biggest web sites doesn't mean by default it warrants a position on a phone. The world is full of idiots (look at American Idol and all the lame, talentless reality shows that are popular, need I say more?), so this just proves that people have no taste. It's lame.

As far as the iPod, I'd rather have my music ripped through Apple Lossless (they are 10x bigger in size and quality than the crappy songs iTunes plays, which I found out the hard way after having spent $4,000 on modding my Infiniti FX for an iPod system, 128 and even 192 kbps bit rate isn't nearly as good as CD quality), than delivered via YouTube (assuming that will happen). More over, Youtube will NEVER stream movies and shows due to copyright infringement, unless networks such as CBS/NBC/ABC/etc would allow it, which they don't as most videos on YouTube have been pulled by Viacom (which owns MTV and other networks) due to copyright infringement.

Basically, it's a lackluster entertainment site that Apple seems worthy enough to put on the launch of one of their biggest products. Sorry boys, but that's a bad business move (and in bad taste).

100% dead on. iChat is not on the phone because simply is not necessary. The SMS UI basically IS ichat, and there is a reason for it.

The "session" style messaging makes it even more like ichat as well.

Besides, who wants random instant messages on their phone that will usually go unanswered when you're not paying attention. If you are paying attention to the phone (ie: using the internet) then texting will work just fine and basically function the same way.

Yeah, video conferencing between the iPhone and iChat via camera's. There were a lot of rumors that would be a big possibility, as iChat 4.0 in leopard has an answering machine option with taped video away messages. It would have been great, esp for businesses, to use the iPhone for video conferencing, and a great tool which no other phone currently has on the market. Throwing in Youtube is a lame duck to appease the masses, which sadly there is no accounting for taste. Oh well. Give them the candy everybody wants and they'll be happy.

suddenly the apple tv can do more cool stuff than my pretender (mini). Bring youtube to Front Row!

Actually, CBS has their own channel on YouTube.

Can anyone comment on the difference between using the dedicated Youtube player and navigating to youtube.com through the safari app????????

These are the differences:

(1) The YouTube App being deployed on the iPhone grabs YouTube video content from their servers that is encoded in the H.264 codec. These videos are not encoded in the same format as what is being viewed on the web now. These files can be viewed via the Quicktime plug-in, which the iPhone has.

(2) The videos on the YouTube web site are videos that have been encoded in the Flash .flv (or Flash video) format. This requires the Flash plug-in to be on the user's browser (which the Safari on iPhone will not have).

So, in essence, even though you can see the same exact content, you won't be looking at the EXACT same files.

Also . . . .
The videos that are currently on the YouTube web site are in the Flash video format (.flv) and set to the "Medium" to "Low Medium" quality setting when they are encoded. Flash FLV files can actually be very nice quality if they are encoded to a higher qulaity setting. But this being the Internet where size REALLY does matter, they are encoded to a lower setting. This (besides people submitting poor quality footage - sh*t in, sh*t out) is the reason that most of these videos are of Medium to poor quality. By contrast, the H.264 codec will allow the content to be just as small, if not smaller, while delivering better quality video.

So it looks like there will be a set of videos in the FLV format for the web content and a set of videos in the H.264 format for the iPhone. The question is. Will ALL Youtube content be moved over to the H.264 format and will they do away with the FLV format all together?

Actually you couldn't be more wrong. You couldn't POSSIBLY be more wrong.

YouTUBE began as and still is incredibly useful for uploading and sharing video media of any kind, whether they be personal vids, amateur films, or for sharing VERY important public media that cannot be found on your nightly news.

YouTUBE has a lot of useless content yes, but so does the internet itself. Is that a reason to leave the internet off the iPhone, because of potential useless content?

Edit: Furthermore, I use YouTUBE constantly, and NOT to watch dogs skateboard.

Thank you very much, I assumed as much given the flash-plug in fact, just wanted the clarification. To me this a huge improvement since H.264 codec is superior and pretty soon ALL youtube content will be accessible this way.
