If the resolution and buffering of the YouTube clips in :apple:TV is good, Apple will be another huge step toward having a bona fide cable-killer on its hands.

YouTube clip of guy lighting a fart today... Real-time HD "Grey's Anatomy" this fall? If Apple makes all of its current TV content plus live sports, award shows, etc., available on demand and with a lot of it in HD for $50 a month... bye bye Comcast!

Also, I like the new (isn't it new?) demo on the :apple:tv page that lets you see how the menus work just like it's a real :apple:tv.

Great image on the AppleTV/YouTube Combo, really pleased!
As said above, my curtains don't seal out the daylight, expect much better picture in "real lide situation" (evening viewing of projector/TV Set).
Also, just simple handheld shots, contributing to some blurr.

AND THE BEST: NO YouTube COMMENTS!!! :)) I hate the stupidity of YouTube comments, so not having to see them really makes YouTube content better, LOL!

It Won't Download The Update!!

I don't know what the problem is but the update will not download on my Apple TV!

It just sits there and the little white circle thing just keeps spinning...

How long did the update take for the people that downloaded it and got it to work?

Really? Youtube?! Why would any one want that on a PDA device? Hey, I'm all Apple and am usually the last one to complain about anything they do, but $499 to $599 to have Youtube as a capability is ludicrous. Seriously Steve, I'd be a little embarrassed for having Google strong-arm you into putting Youtube on that device. I'm flabbergasted.

Okay, not to be a total jackass, but you'd be paying $499 - $599 for YouTube, E-Mail, Safari, a widescreen 4-8GB video iPod, Cellphone and Dashboard... all on a mobile device.

That's pretty amazing if you ask me.

I'm not getting one, by the way, unless I can get out of the Data Plan. I'm too poor, and I have to pay for a wedding in August.

Just updated my Apple TV. YouTube update seems ok, although I only have a 1Mb ADSL connection and its a bit slow (thats SPAIN for you!).

A word of warning though, this update does remove any hacks (frappliances) you may have added to AppleTV Menu and it also disables SSH. Luckily I had my reliable APPLETV Patchstick on hand to enable SSH again. :)

Hi Sam, I did not time it, but it took roughly four minutes to download, and then it needed maybe 5 minutes to install (I make coffee in the meantime and checked emails, so it might have been shorter). However, my projector didn't pick up the signal after the (two?) reboots of the AppleTV (not happening after download, just after actual installation of the 1.1 Update). Easily solved by cycling through the input selections (Video, HDMI,...).

Gee, Apple cant win. First people moan that web 'applications' arent good enough because they dont offer the full iPhone experience, and yet Apple are adding applications and people moan because we can just access YouTube via the browser (which you cant anyway)

Whatever way you look at it, this is GOOD news. Look how it takes advantage of the iPhones 4 touch buttons above the Home button etc. Native iPhone apps that integrate with websites is exactly why I am excited about the phone. While its a shame this is limited to Apple at the moment, anything like this is a welcome feature. I would personally shed tears if we were to see a Gmail and Google Reader client :D

Um yeah you CAN just use Safari on the iPhone to watch YouTube Videos.

I am intrested in streaming media from my PC to my TV. I have alot of HD content that i'd like to play on my HDTV. But most of it is in XVID format. Some of my video is MPEG2, DVIX and .vob, Does the apple TV support that yet?

Youtube - Not all of it immediately, but that's not such a big deal

Safari - Nice but not great without Flash, or Perian plug ins for compatibility

Dashboard - Crippled (so far at least) because its ONLY APPLE WIDGETS!

Hopefully Google docs will play nice...

The Apple/Google relationship just grows and grows. Whatever next?
Exactly. I believe we're seeing just the beginnings of several more teasers before launch. Just a couple of days it was better battery life and much nice screen. Today it's YouTube on the phone. "What's next?" -- Good question.

I don't particularly care for the You Tube icon on the iPhone...looks a bit dull/boring.
Not as exciting as the red/white/black logo we've grown accustomed to however, I believe using the Corporate logo for YT would stick out like a sore thumb. They have carefully thought about each icon and the placement of each and how well they work with each other. I doubt we'll ever see another company's logo on the Home menu of the iPhone. Even "AT&T" is just a bit of text that looks nice. No logo even for the phone service provider! Pretty radical.

No killer app, but definitely a time killer

Cool, but a bit bleh...nothing too exciting...

Considering the amount of time and work this has taken (and will continue to take), I believe this was a killer app and not at all bleh. Some here might not use YouTube much but for those that do, it's a big deal. Teens will eat this thing up. I'm not sure what the experience is like on any other mobile phone but I'm sure it's NOTHING like this. Personally, I love to use TubeSock to download my favorite YouTube videos which converts the video to a variety of formats, some of which can be stored and played back on my iPod. Awesome... well worth the money spent on it (I believe about $15).

------

What makes this all so exciting is that Apple is continuing to create more and more intrigue, speculation, value and lust for a product that has not even shipped yet.

Two questions I haven't seen mentioned in this thread:

1. Are the AppleTV videos still 320x240, just less compressed? Or is the res boosted too?

2. Although it may take until fall to get the rest of the back catalog converted, all NEWLY added stuff should be .H264/AppleTV-ready immediately from now on, according to previous announcements. Is this true? Anyone try adding a YoutTube video and see if it shows up on AppleTV as quickly as on the site?

YouTube on your AppleTV is fun, quality is pants but it's easy to use and quite a nice feature.

Get an Xbox 360 and you will be happy. I have Connect360 on my Mac, you just need that or Windows Media Center Edition to stream it to the 360. It is awesome, better value then :apple: TV in my opinion. You can also rent movies or buy TV shows in HD directly to the 360. You also get surround sound support, unlike the :apple: TV. The 360 is a much better investment.

I'm a teen and won't eat this up...

By 'bleh' I meant that we pretty much knew that a 12th app was coming, and it could have been so much better than this (iChat, VoIP etc.) :)

Even though it might not be the answer you are hoping for, but with something like "VisualHub" or "Crunch" or I believe Roxio has a new conversion software out there, it's really easy to convert even large collections to a proper AppleTV/iPod selection. This, to me at least, is preferable, as I believe the Apple Entertainment family is only ever expanding, and H.264 is nice for me.

Glad to see that Apple is actually upgrading the product (albeit in small doses) before it even hits stores.

All I'm reallllllly clamoring for is a chance to actually use that keyboard, because I'm very very curious. Demo model in Apple store please, and a sharp stick to fight off the lust-filled mob.

Yes, I doubt that Picasa for Mac will ever be released (because of iPhoto competition) but I would love it.
There is Google desktop search for mac, while we already have Spotlight and Quicksilver...
