I think that apple has a clear strategy here : they dont want the iPhone to be a smartphone for busines.

I wonder if the iPod is a good analogy? When it came out, there was just one iPod. Now there is a whole family of iPods, at a wide range of prices, targeting several different niches, and there is a rich ecosystem to support them.

I wonder if in 4-5 years from now today's iPhone will look as clunky and limited as the original iPod does today?

Reset your :apple: TV from the TV itself then re-sync it to your main computer. After thats done try the update again. It also could be the :apple: TV isnt configured correctly on your network. If you've ever turned it off.e.g. unplugging it. I've found that it helps to redo the network settings.

That was the first thing that I did after letting it sit there for an hour. I unplugged it, waited, and then reconfigured my network settings.

Still nothing...

I know it's connected to the internet because I am able to watch movie trailers. I also recieved the option for the update.

Okay, not to be a total jackass, but you'd be paying $499 - $599 for YouTube, E-Mail, Safari, a widescreen 4-8GB video iPod, Cellphone and Dashboard... all on a mobile device.

That's pretty amazing if you ask me.

I'm not getting one, by the way, unless I can get out of the Data Plan. I'm too poor, and I have to pay for a wedding in August.

No, I know it has all that, but to hold off on announcing "YouTube" as a "secret additional feature" seems laughable. Why not video conferencing with the cam through iChat? Leopard iChat 4.0 has an added "Answering Machine" for either recorded voice or video away messages. I would have been blow away with that, not watching doofus's on YouTube with their ridiculous waste of time video's. I just seems to me that Google may have strong armed Apple into adding Youtube to all it's current video capable products as part of a deal for adding Google map features and such. Just doesn't make any sense other wise. The only time I watch youtube is for something politically oriented or if I'm extremely bored.

Iv'e also hated flash when I see a web page that says download flash I move on or skip intro.

please please let this be the death blow to flash!

Really? What is it with people STILL dissing Flash? Seriously, for every crappy Greeting card and cheap animation Flash site out there (yes, I will admit, there are quite a few) I could show you 50 HTML horrible sites. Are we going to dismiss HTML now? Just because there are crappy sites out there that are using Flash, doesn't mean that you have to constantly 'dis Flash. If you see a crappy photograph, does that mean that the camera itself is crap? I don't think so. If I see a terrible photograph, I'll blame the photographer, NOT the camera. Seriously people, Flash is an incredible tool (if used properly, see examples below) so get used to it. It's in 98% of computers out there. It's a reality. But I think the reason that is not incorporated into this first version of the iPhone is because of the drain it can have on the battery life. Flash can sometimes be more CPU intensive, thus draining more on the battery than say a straight HTML page. Hopefully this will be resolved soon within the iPhone realm.

But the point of dismissing Flash altogether is just not there. And as a Flash designer for the past 8 years, I take it personally.

Shame for those of us who would like to see a super portable general purpose OS X machine.

Yeah. I am waiting to see if Apple positions the iPhone like a consumer electronics device (like the iPod and AppleTV) or like a platform like the Mac.

I think it is too early to tell. If Apple wants to make it a platform, they will have to develop new HIGs, APIs, documentation, development tools, etc. Given that Apple is delivering the iPhone on the last hour of the last day of the month (and had to delay their flagship Leopard to make this date), I don't think there is any way they could have delivered an SDK before the launch.

Maybe by MacWorld 08 or WWDC 08 we will know.

Doing the social right

Well this is very good news.

MS tried the social and it failed, now you can get your MySpace (and others), Utube content, and all the favorite emails services along with SMS and others all in a single device.

Now we just need the camera moved to the opposite side and we can do video chats and photos (I hope). Maybe next version.

Next we need the Dick Tracy watch (iWatch) same capabilities in a wrist watch.

I'm using a MBP and Camino, and I don't know which one it was, but I opended up all 4 sites, paused the info one, started looking at the Whale and one of them cause Camino to crash.

Perhaps thats why flash isn't on the iPhone. When it causes full featured laptop browsers to crash.?:p

So, you admit to watching YouTube, but you find the announcement not newsworthy? I personally have found some pretty rare foootage of concerts and TV shows featuring many of my favorite artists on YouTube. For that it rocks.

You seem to be missing a very important point of the announcement, IMO. The big news is not that YouTube can be accessed from the iPhone directly (which will surely be a selling point for millions of YT junkies out there in fovir of the iPhone) but that YouTube is in the process of converting all of it's content to H.264. YouTube said that all of their content will be H.264 by the fall. That will go a long way towards making yet another Apple-backed technology a Web standard (alongside QuickTime and AAC).

Indeed. One of my favorite Flash sites is the Nike+ site, which I log into through iTunes after every run using the Nike+iPod kit. I also dabble a bit Flash programming, and if properly done, Flash-based sites can be very cool indeed.

OTOH many banner ads on websites nowadays are done in Flash, therefore I'm very happy that Flash isn't implemented on the 1st batch of iPhones. keeps the phone clean.

Saab's site sucks. The controlls on the bottom dont work as they should and it took alot of random clicking to discover the links at the top do work. It says "use the slider" and I clicked around and gave up.... then i slid the slider.... still though it took too long and too complex to figure that out.

I have comcast and this, never use it, I like simple slideshows better....

You can do this with Javascript... and why does it resize my browser? Sites that resize the window and remove the browser bar piss me off to no end.

Took awhile to load.... scroll wheel doesnt work in it.... What funtionality does a transition animation serve besides taking longer to load a page? I'll maybe wait for a load, but im not going to sit through 2sec transitions, I'm in a hurry....

Agreed, flash sucks, the only thing it should be used for is vector drawn movies. But, iPhone sucks more for not having it, yet.

Wow. Seems like you got some major problems going on. Who know what kind of crap you got on your computer. I got a Linux machine, a PC laptop, 3 Macs, 5 browsers (IE, Safari, Firefox, Camino and Opera) and they all run just fine on mine. Every platform, every browser. These are well set up sites from some pretty big companies. These sites are pretty well tested. I seriously doubt that they would release them if they cause "every" computer to crash. Just because your computer craps out on you, doesn't mean it's Flash, it probably means you got a screwed up computer (viruses, worms, screwed up system files, who knows what). I had a friend whose computer crashed every time he visited a site using Java's applets. Guess what. His Java was corrupt. Not the sites.

AHHH Now it makes sense

Now it makes sense why they are not allowing Flash, althought I do not believe that they should hae done away with it completely IMO but rather given the user a choice. They obviously did this to up their battery life numbers for the "Internet browsing" spec, so I can understand from a spec point of view.

Sorry if this is a silly question but : for watching videos, which they say you can watch video for 7 hours, this includes backlighting? I find that to be extraordinary.

Hey us old people take offense

Sorry if you feel offended. But it's just so unnatural for younger people to hold a remote in one hand basically up to your chin, squinting to look for the right button and taking the other hand's index finger to press the button.

Must suck to have numb fingers. I for one use a 2000 dpi laser mouse that can cover a 20" screen on a 1 square inch of mouse movement. My hand rests on the desk and I only slightly move my thumb and ring finger to move the mouse around. People always say "where did the mouse pointer go?" when they try to use my mouse because they move it like an air hockey thing. Oh yea, I made it so tilting the mouse wheel to the right does COMMAND+W. It's a Logitech G5 with USB Overdrive as software.

Disable/Enable youTube?

I am at work, and no time to go home to upgrade :apple: TV, but before I do, can you turn off and on the youTube menu-item thru iTunes?

Reason is that the :apple: TV is in my little girl's room. She is 5 and I found :apple: TV a great way to limit her viewing habits. We buy the shows she likes on iTunes, after she previews it first, and then she can watch it in her room whenever she wants. I really dislike the idea to make youTube available to her. For now, I can just skip the upgrade, but next time something comes around, I am sure Apple will put this in that upgrade. If you downloaded the software, let me know. Thanks in advance!!

Apple really should build an option for every single menu-item to show or hide it. Very easy to do, and great benefits for some people.

Apple TV iTunes Store setting

I noticed there's an "iTunes Store" setting now between Network and Screensaver that I don't recall before the update. If you look at Apple's Apple TV website tour, it's not there - so I'm thinking this is new.

ETA: there are a bunch of other enhancements described in this Apple Discussions thread.

I admitted to SOMETIMES watching YouTube, but not enough to warrant a "secret feature" on a $499 or $599 phone. That's the difference.

As for H.264, I wouldn't just give that credit to YouTube/Google alone.

Again, YouTube over iChat?! Seriously? Doesn't make sense.

Really?

I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I guess you go back to viewing your MySpace pages.

Or better yet, check this out. Is this more to your liking?

It sucks because I couldn't use it immediately, it wasn't obvious enough, not because it doesn't look nice. And... I'm swedish so I love Scania Auto and Volvo just not the game I have to play with websites trying to use them....In the time it took me to figure out howto use the slider I could have clicked "gallery" and loaded a QTVR 360 view....

PS. My myspace page won't show up right on iPhone. ;)

I just looked at all the new quicktime demos. The iPhone is looking better and better.

One thing I noticed is it seems like the iPhone will be able to download webpages in the background while you are doing anything else you want on the iPhone (much like the Sidekick does). This will make slow load times on EDGE much more bearable.

I can't WAIT for June 29th!

I'm a teen and won't eat this up...

By 'bleh' I meant that we pretty much knew that a 12th app was coming, and it could have been so much better than this (iChat, VoIP etc.) :)

considering the fact that you are a TEEN that visits Macrumors.com, I would say you are NOT the target audience or a TYPICAL teen. Next time you see people in your Math class, or better yet, a P.E. class, see how many of them are visiting this sight. Most teens don't even know what VoIP is.

Not an insult to you, but a reality check (Trust me, you probably know more about technology than I ever will... just saying). Most teens are trying to impress somebody (just like a lot of adults), and what would be more impressive than being able to show your friends something on YOUTUBE although it is blocked in many schools now.

I'm a teacher, and I have noticed a few things:
1. Students love their myspace accounts and will go to any measure to check it during the day.
2. Students love watching youtube.
3. Students love texting.

I think Apple has grabbed a hold of number 2 and 3 and improved on them. Perhaps texting speed will go down with the touch screen, but the fact that you will be able to send website links, photos, and now YOUTUBE to your friends will make up the difference. If they are targeting a high school or college aged consumer, it will be interesting to see how well iPHONE's Safari will handle social networks like Myspace or Facebook w/o flash support.
