Thanks, but no thanks. I'm old enough to know how this game is played. They get you at $7.99 but by 2027-28, this price will have increased to at least $12.99. The greed will be too much to contain.

If they can guarantee at least 5 years at $7.99, or that in 5 years this won't cost more than $9.99, I would think about it. Until then, my trusty ad-blocker does the job.

I think that's a fair price/month. While I'll be keeping my Premium subscription, I only use the YouTube Music portion in my car when I didn't want to plug-in my phone. Downloading and background playback are still a must to me.
“I think that's a fair price/month” for now

Why would you need a 5 year guarantee to subscribe if $7.99 is a fair price right now? Could cancel whenever the increase is announced.

a discount is a perk, fair enough. good way to look at it.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong, T-Mobile gives a lot of freebies with their Tuesdays promotions. But I’d rather get a discount on something that I pay for every month anyway.

Besides, most of the time, the freebies from T-Mobile were for a free food item at some local chain that is over 200 miles from me.

Verizon also has experiences you can win. I got free Rangers tickets with club access and unlimited food back in December. I took my dad as a Christmas gift, it was great. That was actually the second time I won tickets.

I think this is their last chance at "amnesty" before they start embedding ads in the video stream which makes them unskippable.

Keep in mind, YouTube Red (before it was called YouTube Premium) was $7.99 a month. They continued to jack up the price and cut back on features fulfilling the ******tification prophecy. Alphabet is now reintroducing a worse product for the same price it initially came out as.

Youtube Premium is a fine service, but way too bloated with YT Music subscription built in. I need ad-free Youtube vidoes but don't want to pay for YTM as I already have my Apple Music, yet it seems impossible for google to just exclude YTM from regular YT Premium.

Nice move YouTube. While adblockers work well on a laptop, if you watch a lot of YT on an AppleTV or other streaming device this is a great option. I hate ads - they are rarely of interest to me and I do pay to get rid of them on services that I use a lot. I watch more YT than any other service.

I would have jumped on this, but I've become so reliant on background play to run videos like podcasts while I work out or do chores that it's not worth the 6 dollars a month savings.

Considering the worldwide reduction of non-essential USA products that started happening last month, I assume a subscription to an ads-reduced Youtube experience would fall in that category. I’d vote with the team that most would be happy in using ad blockers. Maybe Google is merely moving to a market it has some traction.

That's exactly what this service is intended to be. YouTube Premium without music.

While there may have been special limited time offers made to some early subscribers, the standard price for YouTube Red at launch in 2015 was actually $9.99/month or $12.99/month for those subscribing through Apple's App Store.

Adjusting for inflation, $9.99/month would be approximately $13.35/month in today's dollars which is not too far off the current $13.99 monthly YouTube Premium price.

Was expecting $9.99. Good to see this price especially since prices may increase again within the next 12 months.

As expected, YouTube has announced the expansion of its $7.99 a month Premium Lite plan to the United States, following a months-long pilot phase in international markets. The new, lower-priced version of YouTube's paid video subscription service functions largely without ads, though music videos on the platform continue to include them.

According to the Google subsidiary, YouTube Premium Lite is aimed at people who want to consume podcasting, make-up, gaming streams, tutorials, and other core creator content on YouTube that is distinguishable from music.

It's important to note that the new Premium Lite plan does not include the ability to download and background play YouTube videos on devices. For users who want ad-free music on YouTube and YouTube Music, plus offline and background play, YouTube continues to recommend its Premium plan ($13.99 per month).

YouTube said it will continue to expand its Premium Lite pilots to additional countries this year and introduce more ways for users to get the most from their subscriptions. YouTube also revealed today that it now has over 125 million users worldwide who subscribe to YouTube Premium or YouTube Music.

Works for me, I don’t use YouTube Music at all, just for tutorials and documentaries and the ads have been driving be batty.

I just updated my YouTube app (iOS) and don’t see this option yet, guess I’ll check again tomorrow 🤷‍♂️

To me, the bigger issue is the "most videos". I'd want more detail before I downgraded to the cheaper version. If any of what I watch isn't part of the "most videos" it isn't worth saving a few bucks.
I’m pretty sure this refers to videos that the algorithm identifies as music being excluded, but of course it’s better to get confirmation. Or just try it out for a month.

Here's the fine print on that:

"For Premium Lite, ads may appear on music content, Shorts, and when you search or browse."
