Google is raising prices for YouTube Premium. The increases take effect immediately for new subscribers and in June for existing subscribers.

In the U.S., a YouTube Premium subscription now costs $15.99 per month or $159.99 per year, up from $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year previously. If you have a Family plan, the monthly price is increasing to $26.99, up from $22.99.

The discounted student plan also increased to $8.99 per month, up from $7.99 per month.

YouTube Premium offers ad-free videos, the ability to play videos in the background without having the YouTube app visible, the ability to download videos for offline playback, ad-free access to YouTube Music, and a few other benefits.

YouTube Premium Lite also increased to $8.99 per month, up from $7.99 per month. With this plan, ads are still shown on music videos, YouTube Shorts, and when you search or browse, and ad-free access to YouTube Music is not included.

The last YouTube Premium price increase was in 2023.

Their last price hike is why I quit.

I wish Youtube still did a streaming service like Netflix. If they bundled this plus, Youtube videos with no commercials, plus music I would get ultimate. Just the idea that it feels like there are less streaming companies with their hands in my pocket would make it worth it. 😉

Prices are bloody ridiculous, I use sharingful so I get to split a family plan with random people. So I'm paying £4.60 a month for a premium plan which is far more reasonable, been using that method for a year without issues. But with Google being the dicks that they are, they'll will probably put a stop to that eventually as well.

I used to use the VPN method to hop around the world, but I got fed up of being blocked after a short time, plus it's getting harder to find a working country these days.

Of course I can block them with extensions and I still use those browser extensions, but I can't use those on the Apple TV or the native YT app.

Too much for the Premium version and I have to draw the line somewhere because subscriptions are out of control.

Question for Lite Subscribers: I search a lot for stuff. Do ads really play on videos after searching for content?

I’ll still pay it. The value of having it on my TV and YouTube music as well is enough for me
Same. I don't mind, because it benefits me greatly. I don't subscribe to Apple Music, Pandora, or Spotify. I subscribe to YouTube Premium, and not only do I get ad-free music in the car (where I use it daily) and on my phone, but I don't have to watch ads for YouTube videos (I consume a lot of YouTube videos). It's a win-win for me.

Then again, the only other subscriptions I have are Sling TV and Amazon Prime, so I won't complain.

I've never paid for it and don't foresee a time I ever will. I use the commercials to race to the bathroom or grab a snack and relive my 80's childhood.

Same. Commercials don't bother us; we just take them as a break. Who wants to sit for an hour without even getting up?

I don't personally watch much YouTube at all, except This Old House content and DIY stuff The kids watch the majority of it.
