The price keep increasing. The only reason anyone would buy is to get rid of ads. But you still have to watch sponsored sections.

A lot of the channels I follow STILL don't have any ads on them; we all need to remember that YT's original business model was to simply host uploaded videos, collect data on who was watching what, and then sell that to advertisers. I knew that going in and I accepted it. YT's founders were fabulously successful, becoming billionaires, and you'd think they'd be happy with that.

NO. No, they weren't. They needed MORE MONEY, and so started shoving paid ads down our throat. I've started hitting "Command-Q" to immediately leave FB when an ad comes on, and if ALL of us had done that from the start, YT's original investors would've killed the Ad idea by the end of the week; so much for that, though. I do have a decent YT ad blocker that I use for some sites, and the few that it doesn't work for, I just don't watch anymore.

I wish more of us proletariat would follow this model, just leave any service that tries to screw us. I've dropped my amazoid membership, are-you-siriusXM, cable TV, won't fly on airlines anymore, won't even eat at burger king anymore. I'm old enough to remember just reading books, and touching grass, and walking; I don't need the rest of this "GIMME-MORE-MONEYYYYY!!" crap.

EDIT: Oh yeah, has anyone else noticed this YT crap?: if they shove an ad down your throat, mid-sentence during a video, and you immediately hit CMD-Q to quit YT, it doesn't work!?!?!?! HOW does YT block a basic MacOS command to quit a website?!? I have found if I open a video in another tab, I can kill it by closing the tab. How the effin' eff are they doing that?!?
I learn so much every month on YT (tech, science, philosophy, architecture, psychology, etc.). It would be a bargain at 3x the price.

Haven’t seen a commercial in years…

And that's completely fair. These creators are providing essentially free content to you, and they deserve to have some control over how they get paid for it. Because Adsense pays like ****.

YouTube has been cracking down a bit more lately but there are still some good places to get it at a discounted rate. I was using some sideloaded apps recently but they can’t easily update anymore so it’s back to hoping Google doesn’t cancel my sketchy plan again.

Raising the price while replacing so much of the content with AI.. What could possibly go wrong.. They really need to put the curbs in on all the AI slop. Its really bad. we should be able to filter out the AI.

Brave Browser is proving to be surprisingly great for this in my testing with a non-premium extra YT account I have.

I was using brave browser as well for a while. There is just something about the UI/navigation of the official YouTube app that I have a hard time giving up. I’m willing to pay the $4.99 a month with my sketchy plan for the convenience of the official app.

I agree and you can tell when junk channels try to get around it once you hear the AI voice start talking (similar to AI voice in drive thru or phone systems) even if the thumbnail looks like an interesting topic.

YouTube Premium Lite also increased to $8.99 per month, up from $7.99 per month. With this plan, ads are still shown on music videos, YouTube Shorts, and when you search or browse, and ad-free access to YouTube Music is not included.

Imagine paying a subscription and still seeing ads.

Just block ads. uBlock Origin or AdGuard works well.

I guess we got to sail the seven seas...
oh wait that wont work too well here lol
Doesn't work on the TV, which is where 90% of our household YouTube is watched. Still don't pay for it.

On IOS install Enhance YT.
On my Sony TV (which runs an Android service called Google TV) install SmartTube. I Don't even have a Google TV account or anything (much less a Youtube acct) but its easy to throw the app on a thumbdrive and copy it (actually I think I did it from my shared network drive on my router that hosts all my videos found on the seven seas).

Both are tiny, fast apps and I've never seen an ad since the day I installed them. (Enhance YT is less than 1 MB!)

Edit: SmartTube includes SponsorBlock as well.. not sure about Enhance YT but I think so.

I agree with this most definitely being the case for things like Netflix, where ads are inevitable because it’s the only way to actually generate revenue on a specific show or movie.

YouTube is a bit different because they don’t fund any of the content. I’m not sure how it shakes out on YT’s side, but I do know that you watching a creator’s video with YT premium generates more revenue for the creator than watching it with ads. Which goes to show how little the ad money can be on YT.

As someone posting videos, the ad-share is minimal. YouTube is keeping the lions share of premium just like Apple and Spotify would prefer you not listen to any music at all. The less you listen, the more profit they keep that never goes to the rights-holders. YouTube is the same.

This either shows how few people subscribe to YT Premium OR how crappy the rev-share is and that figure has never been published. today, there's little reason for me to promote that to subscribers.

Here's revenue last 30 days sorted by "watch page ads"

I have the monthly family plan. I just found out to switch to the annual plan I have to cancel and then re-subscribe. There is no way to just change the subscription type. So Stupid!!
