I think the age of streaming subscriptions / SaaS may be coming to an end faster than we think. In the halcyon days of the 2010s all the subscriptions were very stable in pricing, with either no rises or years between rises: Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, Amazon Prime, GamePass etc

The last few years though have shown more frequent and larger price rises to the point where I think people are going to become more selective about what they subscribe to, which in turn, will probably lead to more price rises for those that stay.

Yes, I’m sure you’re both subscribed to lots of YT creators Patreons etc but refuse to pay the very reasonable cost of YT Premium Lite. Sure.

I wish Apple Music included all of the music videos that YouTube has. I do not use YouTube music, but I very much appreciate making YouTube work like an ad free version of MTV from the 80s and 90s. But I am not sure I will keep subscribing to this.

Hate to see it, but to echo some others here -- it is far and away my most watched platform, bar none. It's the last sub I'd ever cancel.

I guess at least this is the only increase since 2023, as per the article. Compare that to Netflix which seems like it has price increases every year.

I rotate the ones I do use. I'll subscribe for a month or 2 and cancel, and that's it until the next year.

It blocks them. Every once in a while one gets through. Also, Youtube will do a work around, Brave will fix it, Youtube fixes..... it's a cat and mouse game.

Kind of an odd take. I’m all for pirating the mega corporations content, as buying isn’t ownership anymore (can’t even buy most shows)

But while I hate what Google has done with it the past few years, YouTube is a fully democratized creator centric video platform where anyone can host video for free. It’s kind of a miracle, especially on the modern internet.

Not condemning you, and the price is getting a bit absurd, but just my take

I think that I read that these companies make way more money on advertising based viewers anyway so they can continue squeezing people who do pay because honestly they want you to watch ads. They make a ton of money on people watching ads and therefore they could make this $25 a month and probably still wish you were watching ads instead.

I agree with this most definitely being the case for things like Netflix, where ads are inevitable because it’s the only way to actually generate revenue on a specific show or movie.

YouTube is a bit different because they don’t fund any of the content. I’m not sure how it shakes out on YT’s side, but I do know that you watching a creator’s video with YT premium generates more revenue for the creator than watching it with ads. Which goes to show how little the ad money can be on YT.
