The price of YouTube premium is absurd. I'd consider it if it was ~$7 p/m, like Prime Video, but $15 p/m, get outta here! And since Premium's pricing puts it out of contention, YouTube Vanced and YouTube Smart TV (for Android TV) are the way to go for an ad-free experience.
Agree its silly price. I do pay it though so I can have background music. Hate the cost!

It feels like I watch more ads than video on YouTube some days. I've definitely considered Premium but the price just doesn't seem worth it since I don't value YouTube Music or offline playback very much. I'd probably be ok with a cheaper plan that just limited to one ad per video.

Or you just „fly“ to Turkey and pay less than a cheese burger for the premium subscription 😁.
Premium Lite. What a stupid name.

by the way, how does Google still get away with a more expensive subscription price via Apple IAP? I thought this wasn’t allowed and that’s why Netflix stopped signing up from iOS all together
It is allowed, in fact it's very common practice. It's just a terrible experience for the user having to pay 30% more just because they signed up from an Apple platform. And yet pretty much every big multi-billion company like Google, Netflix, Spotify, etc. refused to swallow the 30% themselves. For indie developers I could understand, but for them Apple has had a reduced 15% rate for a while now.

AFAIK YouTube no longer offers any IAPs, at least for new subscribers.

I want all the premium features minus the music part. This alone should reduce the price by a lot.
Spot on google music sounds like trash compared to Apple Music, thought I had faulty speakers on my phone listening to that trash 🤦‍♂️😂

And how does Google get away with paywalling iOS functionality such as background playback? Guideline 3.2.2, defines as Unacceptable:

(ii) Monetizing built-in capabilities provided by the hardware or operating system, such as Push Notifications, the camera, or the gyroscope; or Apple services, such as Apple Music access or iCloud storage.

Ahh so many questions!

I'd be interested if it included all platforms (mobile, web and smart devices/consoles). I rarely use music, download anything or use it in the background. But it seems they are also limiting it for mobile and web.

The price of YouTube premium is pretty fair, IF you use their music subscription. It's only €2 more, which is more than fair.

But if you don't it's pretty steep. I'd go as far as saying they're trying to push their music service using YouTube's effective monopoly.

I’m fine with paying for YouTube premium to avoid ads, but now the in-video sponsor segments are getting ridiculous. I shouldn’t have to, but at least skipping ahead is relatively easy.

Sounds perfect. I have never used any of their premium features like Picture in Picture, play in background, audio-only, music or special shows from teen-stars at a higher budget.

I just want ad-free.

.....and don't get me started on in-video ads. I'll keep it simple. I want YouTube to require creators to self-report ad breaks down to the 2nd and premium subscribers skip those too...automatically.

I consume 100% of YouTube content on my 65" 4K television and I only watch content via the 'subscriptions' tab from the 15 or so channels I like and I watch every video roughly about 45 minutes a day of YOuTube time 5 days a week. Most of the people I watch don't have product placements or shout outs to sponsors but it's creeping in. Once a year I purge a few channels who have sold out and find some new ones.

I believe it’s still allowed and fairly common. Apps simply can’t tell you it’s cheaper to buy elsewhere.

Netflix would have stopped doing IAP because
A) they have enough brand recognition to not need sales to go via Apple
B) they didn’t want to take a 30% loss on IAP if they used the same pricing as on their site
C) they don’t want to charge more which puts a negative light on the service and makes it look expensive compared to other options, both being sold on the App Store but more broadly
D) they want to manage and own the transactions rather than losing visibility because Apple is sitting in between. They can pull some important data by owning the point of sale process such as tracking conversion rates etc and learning how changes to marketing can drive sales. Apple hides a lot of this from devs

Is it just me that really has an issue with YouTube charging extra for background playback, which is essentially an operating system feature, not an app feature?

£12 per month for this and no ads is too high. I trialled it and then cancelled. I would pay £6 pm, but only if background playback was also added.
Totally agree. Apple should not allow iOS to do this. In iOS Apple has given too much control over to app developers. Apple must take back control just as you would expect from a desktop OS.
This is why I prefer to use Safari. Unfortunately YouTube doesn't work the best with Safari on iOS, but its useable with it. I also don't need a prompt saying 'open in YouTube app' everytime I open YouTube in Safari, this doesn't happen on a desktop OS.

Umm I never see ads on YouTube. UBlock Origin and others easily block all ads for free……for years now.

On my iOS devices I use Safari and Wipr to access YouTube and not the app to NOT see ads.
That's note the case anymore, unfortunately. I even emailed Wipr about this and they told me Youtube has made the ads undetectable that content trackers no longer are able to block them.

Riiiiiight €6.99. Six Months from now... €8.99... then another six months... €11.99, then €14.99. You get the picture from this tired-old story.
I signed up for YouTube premium years ago at $9.99 US dollars. They’ve had a few price hikes here but luckily I’ve got to keep my original price. I hope that never changes.
