I looked into switching to using them from cable since it’s $5 cheaper a month and I get way more channels through them, but supposedly the bitrate is significantly worse and the video quality sucks?
It does suck, unless you pay extra to upgrade to 4K. I’m don’t watch enough to do that. Then again, a friend pays for it and grants me access.

No YouTube TV in Canada. Also I wish there was a YouTube Premium that just disabled ads without getting the music. I’ve already got Apple Music and won’t pay $11.99 a month to get rid of ads. I don’t watch enough stuff on YouTube for that to make sense for me.

I own an Apple TV generation 3. After I purchased an Amazon FIRESTICK, I stopped using the APPLE TV and see no reason to ever need it…you Apple fanboys have so much to learn LOL
Given the fact that you are talking about a functioning 10+ year old Apple TV tells more about the longevity and reliability of Apple TV than the “superiority” of FireStick.

You have inadvertently validated one of the many reasons why we like Apple TV compared to so called “alternatives”. Try comparing your Firestick to an Apple TV that was released in this decade. I am pretty sure you would feel differently.

Excellent news , I watch more YouTube on my Apple TV than broadcast nowadays

Why I still have to pay a bbc license is beyond me

I sometimes wonder if Google intentionally delays features like this for Apple platforms as a way to make them a "second class citizen" to their own devices. Why else would something as basic as surround sound support be delayed for so long?
I think you'd be precisely right on that.
However, I don't know what good this really does because, it won't be enough to move someone to Google's ecosystem - just give an Apple user a poor experience with Google's services, and push them away from it

If it was me, I'd be sure to give users on other platforms an even better experience. The ones on my platform are already here.

The frame rate matching seems to be broken - if you pop into the AppleTV owners section you'll see people complaining about it. Any commercial/Video stutters in a way that cuts out the first few seconds of video. Super annoying.
Well, that explains why the app took a dump recently. Thanks for the explanation.

I think it's mostly the Apple TV's lower userbase, Google's stronger position with the Chromecast (and Android TV), and Apple OSes' dislike for AV1 (Google is investing a lot into AV1).

This is a long standing bug. The Apple TV is supposed to set color depth and frame rate according to content, but the YouTube apps don't pass this information to the OS so the switch can happen the AppleTV doesn't support live HDR on any TV apps. We're still waiting for the 2021 Apple TV 4K (and branching tvOS) to help fix this.

With a true HDR TV the best experience requires the incoming signal to match the content. SDR for SDR content, HDR for HDR content. When you have the wrong color depth in the signal, the problems vary by TV but for my LG OLED, HDR content in SDR will look flat and lifeless; SDR content in HDR will be excessively bright.

FIFY. No live TV apps work correctly on the ATK4K - they frame/color switch correctly elsewhere, with exceptions.

I'm using it in Poland but you get American content and tv channels. It's a bit tricky to set it out outside USA, you cannot watch on mobile devices just Apple TV and laptops. Google is unfortunately managed by similar incompetent managers like HBO and you see what is the result of HBO Max, so it never expand to Europe not to mention some big country on other side of the world where people walking on hands ^^ This is even more annoying considering fact that American broadcast companies are operating in Europe. Google has not enough money to build CDN network outside USA, it sounds funny but it's true. :(

It's funny tough the only countries who get still HBO content without Discovery+ crap are those when Sky made the deal.
Actually looked forward to HBO Max coming to my corner of the EU..eventually. Now, since it has merged with Discovery, not so much. I've already enough (and too much) reality-based content with Netflix and Disney+ as it is.

Shame ATV still won’t pass those audio streams through unmolested for your receiver to decode. It really is a joke.
Still the case huh? I trialed a 4K ATV some years ago with my AVR set-up and found this behavior unacceptable, returned it for this very reason. Can't even remember why I made the purchase but I think I was chasing Atmos capability back then with Soundbars/ Sound-projectors at the time.

They should allow it to be easy to upload videos in surround sound also. Not just the shows and movies.
