My household watches a lot of live news and sports. We've had DirecTV Stream since back when it was DirecTVNow. The monthly cost at launch was $35/month and they gave me a free Apple TV just for signing up. It now costs $74.99/month, which appears to be the target number for these live TV streamers.

This is the major problem with these services. They start out cheap then eventually price themselves right out of being competitive. We were with the DIRECTV streaming service from the time it started through last year. Our monthly price had risen more than 100%.

We switched over to YouTubeTV...and thankfully are on a promo of $59/mo for a year. It is going to get to the point where, ironically, cable is going to be the cheaper option...
You have to play the game with these streaming services and cable/satellite services. Once the 1 year promo is done switch to another provider and so one and so forth. I see some homes 🏡 with both DirecTV and Dish satellites 📡 on their houses 🏡

You know what is a real unlimited DVR and even works for shows you didn't know you wanted to watch, months after they were broadcast?

Netflix
Hulu
Youtube
Disney+
...
You know where you cant watch live sports at?

Netflix
Hulu
Youtube
Disney+

They going up on the prices just like Dish and DirecTV. Time to cut the cord on streaming as well and just watch local channels for free
A a lot of people, probably including most of us, predicted years ago that the new streaming TV services will replace cable and eventually become the "new cable" with traditional service costs minus the need for cable boxes, replaced by internet access points. DirecTV Stream, for example, can get you over $100 easily. Starting to smell like Comcast.

Doubled the price in 6 years!, I hope your income has also doubled in that same period. Mine, not. And I will have to cancel some subscriptions, like My Apple Tv, I was waiting to see the ending of Servant this week and now, cleverly, they put Ted Lasso to convince to stay longer... so, another couple of month paying for jist 1 show.

Looks like they're getting everyone to subsidize their NFL deal and 4K, I don't know many who pay for the 4K capability. I was also an early adopter of DirectNow until they pulled these same shenanigans. They're the new cable.

The burden of cost never disappears, only shifts. The cost of cable TV hasn't disappeared, but shifted to internet TV. Charging your electric vehicle is cheaper than filling up your gas tank today, but when the government's tax revenue no longer comes from gasoline, then the government will shift the tax burden to electricity.

Totally happy not to be a customer of YouTube TV. Still wish I didn’t have to get the music service to get as free. Oh well, saves me being annoyed at the family watching videos with ads.

I have Sling for tv and use my brothers info to binge watch stuff not worth it for me to pay monthly on those

To me, cord-cutting means moving away from scheduled channel-based programming.

Which YTTV excels at.

Unlimited DVR means pretty much every show you want to watch is time shifted to your schedule and effectively ad free. It takes a little forethought to select the shows you may wish to watch in this manner, but once done, it's really nice.

As several have mentioned, sports increases the price for YTTV, or any service with live sports (and ticket prices if you see sports in person). I don't wanna sound like the old guy, but I'm finding my life more interesting and fulfilling as my obsession with sports decreases. Just my two cents...

price of eggs, butter, now youtube tv going up - inflation stinks
prices will probably not come down

You're so right. It is like jobs anymore; you get punished for loyalty.

Why would you pay so much for live tv if you can get any streaming service with the same content (movies, tv shows, documentaries, sports) for less? You could literally get Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max et al for far less AND you can watch everything when u want! Without commercial breaks every 2 minutes. I don’t get it

However, I have not watched live tv in years so maybe I am missing out on something great that justifies paying 70+ a month haha
The only thing is if you need local news for some reason, like if you live in Tornado Alley and you need to monitor the weather. Other than that live TV offers very little value right now.

It is still the cheapest, but it makes losing MLB Network sting more. They have essentially replaced usable networks with networks I will never use but the price still goes up. I wish Direct TV Stream had profiles and was slightly cheaper than what they are asking for. That would probably be my only choice to switch.

Jesus, netflix basic is $15.49 now? Ugh and their basic doesn’t even have 4k, or is it even less than 1080?

Actually, Netflix "Basic" is still under $10/month. Basic with ads is $6.99/month and ad-free is $9.99/month.

It's Netflix "Standard" (ad-free) that is $15.49/month.

So I pay $180/month for FIOS and split it with my partner. includes a bunch of channels and internet.

$90/month really isn't so bad, but YTTV is intriguing. We have pretty much all of the major streaming apps and I'm only really paying for Apple TV+ out of pocket and a portion of our Hulu subscription.

Verizon doesn't appear to be increasing prices any time soon and hasn't since we've had them (almost 5 years). I'm just used to having a cable box lol (and it has DVR).
