No. That person is wrong, it uses your geolocation AND the local market can only be changed once every few months.

Edit: They call it “home area” not “local market” and it’s twice per year https://support.google.com/youtubetv/answer/7129768?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop
And Geolocation is a sort of IP address tracking... And the local market changes when you travel; you're not watching YOUR local news while out of town, you're watching that area's local news because, again, it is tracking you via IP.

Why would you pay so much for live tv if you can get any streaming service with the same content (movies, tv shows, documentaries, sports) for less? You could literally get Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max et al for far less AND you can watch everything when u want! Without commercial breaks every 2 minutes. I don’t get it

However, I have not watched live tv in years so maybe I am missing out on something great that justifies paying 70+ a month haha
Live Sports is the answer to your question. Mainly Live ESPN, SEC Network etc..

Was already annoyed by the price increase for YouTube Premium on the family plan from 17.99 USD to 22.99 (and some people who have old grandfathered subs for 14.99 will be seeing that hiked to 22.99 in April). I wasn't at all surprised by this latest price hike on YouTube TV. We were subscribed there and this, coupled with the loss of MLB, pushed us towards cancellation of YT TV (but keeping YT Premium for now). We really didn't use it enough anyway, though we use YT Premium a lot.

Yeah this is why I don't bother with TV anymore. It's a waste of time that I can be doing something else and it's crazy expensive. I know people who pay $250 a month for cable and it looks like the cord cutting services are going the same direction. I mean did anyone really think a different wire bringing it to your house, coaxial cable vs network cable would change the price?

I mean if you think spending the money is worth it and you get enjoyment from TV then go for it but the way I look at it I'd rather put the $250 on a car payment. That's the difference between an okay car and a nice car. I don't miss sitting in front of a TV.

73$ for tv sounds ridiculous to me. I’m barely pay for YouTube premium and I’m ready to stop it if next price hike will be too high.
For same reason I’m trying to keep Disney Plus and Netflix on monthly basis (making breaks in subscription). I believe it can keep prices lowered.

Wow $22.99! I'm paying 11.99 a month for individual membership. It's a bit high but since I watch a lot of YouTube I pay for it. What these companies don't realize is at some point customers will look at alternative ways to get the content for free. If the price is reasonable many people like myself won't go through the hassle because it's not worth it and paying it seems fair.

To me YT Premium annual subscription is the best deal out there. The included music service is great, especially if one likes live performances and niche music categories. Documentaries beat any channel, News from around the world live. Just have to learn how to filter out the silly stuff.

Insane !

Here it costs 35 CAD (25 USD) to have cable TV at home, and some companies just have their app on tvOS so no need for a TV terminal/box.

I fail to see who pays for this service.

I miss live national news, in real time, that’s about the only downside for me in my area. House is not situated for an antenna either.

I will not go back to a cable bundle/subscription ever. I won’t pay these prices currently either. It’s jacked up highway robbery imo.

CBS and my local ABC apps work well enough to not buy in, if they degrade these apps, then I’m stuck.

France24 and Sky news app work just well enough for national USA news, just barely, all through my Roku Premiere+ and 2023 tv.

People not in Canada?

Time to uncut the cord. With all the subscriptions I'm paying more than I did with DirecTV, which was robbery.

YouTube today announced that it is increasing the price of the YouTube TV service, with the cost set to go from $65 to $73 starting today. New members will need to pay $73/month for the streaming service starting now, while prices will increase for existing members on April 18.

According to YouTube, the price is increasing because "content costs have risen" and it needs to charge more to "bring you the best possible TV service."

With the price change, YouTube is also dropping the cost of the 4K content add-on. While it used to cost $19.99 per month, it is now $9.99 per month, so those who were subscribed to YouTube TV with the 4K add-on will actually see a small price decrease. YouTube TV with 4K will cost $83 instead of $85.

YouTube TV is a live TV service that has been around since 2017. When it first launched, YouTube TV was priced at $35, so costs have more than doubled over the last six years. YouTube TV allows up to six people in the same household to use the service, and it includes unlimited cloud DVR storage.

There are more than 100 channels available, with add-on subscriptions for premium networks like HBO Max and STARZ.

At that price, 4K should be included, as well as a few of the current “add-ons” like MavTV.

Will be reevaluating our streaming options going forward.

I’m glad my condo association includes TiVo and HD cable alongside gigabit internet service from Breezeline. I do get mobile streaming with the service but it’s not working correctly right now.

I first tried AT&T TV. It was ok, but the guide was a complete mess. Tried YouTubeTV, loved it, and it was also a little of a pain to navigate. Currently have HBOMax, ShowTime, AppleTV+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, all of which I actually utilize.

I just paused my YTTV service for a few months to see if I really need it. I don’t mind paying for services, but wasting money on unnecessary services isn’t my cup of tea.

Yeah the Family Plan does allow for 6 users though. I'm only using 3 of them so far between myself, my wife and one of our relatives. If you can get other adults on the plan and split the costs it'll work out to be cheaper than the individual plan. Of course you gotta have reliable people that remember to give you the $$ every month, or pay for the year up-front. ;-)

and in swoops Microsoft!

As of April 03,2023, the subscription fee for Microsoft 365 Personal will change to address changing market conditions.

What market conditions in software delivery???? What has changed, your market cap of 2.06 trillion USD? Absolutely no explanation. Disgusted!

I mean, I get it, I don’t like it but I’m not surprised. Still better than cable with Cox, cheaper too, and can share it more easily.

Also the dvr feature is leagues ahead of Hulu, and from the comments it doesn’t seem like that’s improved in the last year when I left Hulu live tv for YTTV

Yeah, it’s the same with a cell phone plan. If you can get four people on the same account, your phone bill is less than half. The problem is I don’t know four friends that are that reliable. What would end up happening is I would end up paying for everyone’s portion till I just got tired and shut the whole thing down 😂😂

Geolocation can be IP address based or device GPS based, but I guess I should’ve used the same terminology in that Google article I linked in that same comment of mine you’re replying to. It clearly states the local channels are based on your home area which you have to verify with your devices location (a type of geolocation) and you only get to change this home location twice per year. Semantics are more important though, I guess. Here it is again: https://support.google.com/youtubetv/answer/7129768?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop
