Because he's discussing the new MacBook Pro... not the Microsoft Surface. Seems self explanatory.

You should rewatch the video... you clearly missed the part where he shows the software which lays out how much the new MBP is being throttled due to heat issues.
You missed the whole point of the comment you were replying to.
He (allegedly) only reviews and comments on Apple products. Presumably for views and attention.

Nothing gets views/revenue like a good old Apple vent.

If I was doing heavy rendering, it would not be on a laptop.
Yes, I always thought it was funny when people pushing that - saying an eGPU and a laptop would be fine... but an eGPU is not mobile so to effectively work you really are bound to a desk... and a desktop is the better solution... It is also the same people that said that Apple should go with nVidia 1080Ti option... well a 1080Ti as an eGPU is effectively the same performance as an AMD 580 in a PCIe slot. In the end, it is all about what works for your workflow. People are irrational by nature. For me, regardless of whether it thermal throttles (about anything would at my ambient room temperature; I would now freeze at North American room temps) -- it would be much more powerful than my 8-core Mac Pro from 2008 (CPU)... which I might have damaged by running it 7/24 for 6 months straight with both CPUs pegged (800% utilization)... I won't be doing that on a laptop  (I will probably make my next Linux machine the more powerful of my computers with my Mac being just "reasonably powerful").

What a about using a dock type of stand? I usually use those aluminum ones for the convenience of having the laptop screen at higher height next to the monitor, but would it help with thermal dissipation?

Need to see more tests ... but I'de still go for the 2018 MBP for the 32GB RAM alone over the 2017 models.
Yes, but if the performance is not that much different between the 3 CPU alternatives - you could still get the 32GB but cheaper with little impact... if the observations are correct.

This is the primary reason I’m holding out for the new Mac Pro. As great as the 2018 MacBook Pro looks and feels, its internals are laden with glue that prevents or complicates basic thermal optimization, not to mention upgrades.

Like the iMac Pro, the new MacBook Pro was a step in the right direction, but for most of us who demand performance, all these steps lead to the new Mac Pro with a modular design and more opportunities for tuning performance.

I guarantee whatever is going on is either a software issue and/or can be addressed in a software update to at least lessen the impact.

Seems it’s one application and more testing needs to be done.

Why not look at the guys videos and check for yourself? He reviews a lot of laptops, it's his main thing reviewing laptops. He has reviewed in the past month alone an Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Razer and Alienware laptop.

His channel covers most things Apple releases but also many competing devices and as I say his main differential from the other YouTubers is that he reviews all manner of laptops from not just Apple. His laptop reviews are pretty good too, he goes into a lot of detail.

Whatever happens, happens. 2.9/32/560X/2TB, my lap is waiting for you.

It could be a first batch, “whoops,” or a full scale, “Gol’dangit.” Either way, that’s why you always buy AppleCare+.

Plus, I do pro audio work. This will be a beast for my needs. I’m super excited.

Now the free, hideous Beats I got... what do I do with that!?

It seems like Apple could use a Quality Assurance department. Because whatever they have now is not acceptable. I've been a QA Engineer for 25 years and it seems the level of defects and bugs is unacceptable for a company of this stature.
Tim doesn’t give a damn. Know why? It will still sell.

Can you please inform us what video editing software taxes the CPU for no reason especially when it's rendering?
No idea, but I’m betting software and application optimization are factors. If not, I’ll admit I was wrong.

That doesn’t mean it’s not software either. Poor software management can tax the CPU for no reason.

So tell us the difference in software and hardware from the last MacBook to the latest. What has changed? Why would a new Intel chip with no new instructions suddenly get taxed more?

The 8th gen is identical to 7th with the exception of more cores. Even if there was 'random cpu taxes', it would also be in the 7th gen, so your 'point' is moot either way

I hope this doesn't lead to failure from overheating. I hope the heatsinks and the way they apply the paste can hold up!
I would recommend buying Apple Care for it, although the failure may occur right after the 3-year mark. We just don't know yet...

Isn't the entire point of the "turbo boost" on these Intel CPUs to allow the CPU to run at a higher than rated clock speed for shorter periods, then throttle down to the "regular" speed once the thermal threshold is reached?

IE, it's working as designed?

Its throttling below the base clock in many cases which is not how it should be working.

This wasn't a test video and he said as much. This was pretty clearly a chastise Dell video. He questioned their logic in putting the i9 in the XPS15 chassis. He also said they have no excuse for the throttling because they've had 3 iterations to get the thermals right. So they have no excuse for the current situation. He said it nicely, but he crawled up into Dell's butt... just a li'l bit.

I get the premise, but I don't understand what's the point in showing gaming results when the whole point of the video is related to the CPU and also the fact that many businesses use the XPS (which in turn, makes the GPU less relevant to this product)? Unless of course he's outlining out all the specs almost like a review video, which then he should also show real-world CPU results. If not, then there not really a point in discussing everything about the product.
