Seems like apple’s fault, not intel’s, if it’s true. Apple designed the thermal solution for the MBP.
Intel doesn't help with their cheap-ass way of connecting the heat spreader. I mean, why is delidding even a thing? Because Intel cheaped out!

go back to the powerhouse 17 inch monster that, *gulp*, took up more space and weight. who cares? these pro machines are already 4 pounds. that isn't really portable to begin with. the macbook 12 inch is barely portable (that's what i use, and 2 pounds is barely manageable) whereas the 11 inch air was actually portable. be realistic. build a super powered up laptop that can be taken with you, even if it is a little heavy and bulky. these pro machines are not meant to be stylish gucci purses for men. we want powered up monsters that can get work done (i.e. analogous to a construction worker's ford f-150 super pick up for the tech guy).

To be fair, this isn't so much Apple's fault as it is Intel's. Intel has really dropped the ball in the past couple of years. If they don't right the ship soon, AMD will take over the CPU game for a while. They are late with everything and are having lots of trouble shrinking the dies.

AMD taking over the CPU game? APPLE is going to take over the CPU game in the near future.

I have a few
1 Dell Inspiron with Intel core i5 6200u with igpu
2 Acer Helios 300 budget gaming laptop. 8th gen i5 with 6cores and I believe a GTX 1060
[doublepost=1531892117][/doublepost]
Even if u look at the new Asus laptop with core i9 and a gtx 1080 (I forgot the name of that laptop) it still doesn't throttle under synthetic load.
They are heavier and thicker than the macbook pro right? I guess in a heavy laptop with good cooling system it won't throttle. However, i looked at some reviews of aero 15x with 1070 and i7 8 gen, which is thin, performed without throttling under heavy loads. It seems that apple wanted to put the latest processor just because of peer pressure without thinking about the heating issue

They put a whole new generation of cpu with two extra cores into the same old and thin design !!! What were they thinking ?

This is another confirmation that apple is not putting serious efforts in making real innovations on the mac lineup.

They made the mistake of making the 15 inch pro thinner in 2016, and now they dont want to admit their ridiculous design decision. There was no way the 2016 form factor was going to accommodate the upcoming next gen of cpus.

I was hoping Apple would learn their lessons, and stop the sloppiness.

They shouldn't offer an I9 option in a chassis that is too thin to handle its thermals. It's a complete waste of money if it gets constantly throttled.

Again Apple, your unsolicited desire for thinness has bitten you in the ass.

I'm going to wait at least 6 months before I upgrade. I suggest everyone else does the smart thing and wait.

x86 will be around for the next 20 years AT LEAST. You can bet your stock money on it. Apple will come out with their own stuff most like to integrate all their devices in one family architecture. This is good for them because they cater to a small market share. Everyone else will be enjoying 8/16/32+ core desktops and laptops while apple will be raging on stage about courage and honor for their own architecture.

It all comes down to price/value. With apple stuff you get fantastic quality build but that's just on the outside. The inside performance no one questions because they paid that inflated $ for and expect the value/performance they paid. Even if they are not getting that performance, no one will complain because the buyers of these iGadgets don't give two flying-F's about performance - they only care about aesthetics and convenience.

CHINA is the biggest threat because having stolen everything from everyone, they will be the one's to watch out for. Their Kirin 980 is big time performance and power efficiency.

Apple seems to be only interested in iphone and ipad.

This is so depressing to me because osx+mbp was a great product for me, but apple is killing this line since 2016.

Ah, but because some random guy on YouTube made the claim it is Mac Rumors front page news! LOL.

That's the thing. Not many people realise, these YouTube guys earn enormous amount of money by creating a video like this. They would not give a flying monkey if the credibility of their claim get questioned, as long as you watch their video. Not saying this guy is wrong or right and I have zero knowledge on the new MacBook pros. Just saying that big claims from YouTuner's I usually see them as a click bait, especially when they are related to some sort of "scandal" with big companies.
No one better then YouTubers knows that people are hugely interested on negativity, and that's the kind of video they want to watch. And YouTubers would work hard to deliver just that.

I think there is still something useful we can take away from this video.

Whatever his motivation may have been, we at least now know that the i9 processor isn’t all that hot, so anyone getting a 15” MBP will likely want to give it a miss unless something changes down the road.

It’s really about learning to separate the facts from the drama when it comes to such content.

This is pretty shocking. There are only two ways to look at this. One, Apple is incompetent when it comes to design and testing and didn’t even bother to evaluate the i9 under heavy load. Two, Apple is highly unethical, choosing to sell an expensive, premium priced laptop with promises of high performance while knowing full well that the processor will never perform adequately under a heavy load.

Several people here on the MR's forum is reporting the same issue.

I have an i9, 32GB, 1TB in front of me. Two questions..

How do I perform the test your looking for and does it hinder the integrity of the laptop to run said test?

Answer those and I’ll run tests right now for you guys.

2 quick (ish) fixes for Apple. First use a higher quality thermal paste - see Snazzylabs video from a little while ago. Second, change the fan speed ramp profile. Sure the Mac is smart enough to see an extended load approaching and ramp up faster

If this is true? What's the point of spending the extra $300 for the Core i9 when it performs worse than the i7?

u can crank you AC up to a freezing temperature or live near north pole to get the extra performance.

Well Duh. It's in the specs. What macbook ever runs below 50c?
The 4.8 GHz can only be reached using the "Thermal Velocity Boost" which allows one core to boost to 4.8 GHz (+200 MHz) as long as the CPU temperature is below 50°C. Multiple cores can be boosted +100 MHz below 50°C.
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i9-8950HK-SoC.279270.0.html
So, basically never unless you work in a freezer or just for a very short moment. As I am writing this on my 2015 MBP with CPU at only 13%, all 4 cores are already above 50°C and fans are already spinning at an annoying noise level.

Sort of figured there would be heat, throttle issues and battery life issues so I ordered mine with the i7. Should still be plenty fast coming from a 2014 13” Macbook Pro

Download and run Prime95 while watching the gauges on Intel Power Gadget. Utilization needs to hit 100% and IA frequency shouldn't go below 2.9Ghz. Temperatures above 90 degrees celcius is generally a bad sign and the CPU will throttle at 95-100 degrees celcius. Here is Aea's post: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...iscussion-merged.2127869/page-5#post-26257592

If anyone could recommend a great notebook cooler that they have tested and tried would be great.

My maxed out 15" gets here tomorrow, I will post some results.

Anything bought directly from Apple, online or physical store, can be returned as Apple says:
  • "You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it."

Hahahahahahaha and people were criticising me for posting that huge slab of a gaming notebook the other day. This thing is just beauty on the outside. It not only has a crappy GPU, it throttles under heavy load. I would rather lug around that MSI notebook for $6000. Let's face it. That's what's required for cooling that CPU.
