YouTube is Simi-independent, so this doesn't really count. The app that I'm keeping an eye on is the "Google" app with Google Assistant.

Google services on Apple devices/software are ridiculously crippled. Stupid move as it is pushing users more and more away from them once good alternatives exist.

The AppleTV version of the YouTube app hasn’t been updated since September 20, 2020.
Yeah, it desperately needs updating. I prefer to use apps via my Apple TV rather than the built-in TV apps but YouTube makes this hard. It’s just terrible on the Apple TV. You can’t manage lists, add to playlists, and it’s really fiddly to just get to the like button. The one built in to my LG TV is vastly superior.

When people ask for system-wide dark mode do they mean across all of the Google apps? The YouTube app has dark mode already.
No it doesn’t change automatically depends on your system settings so at night when dark mode starts on iOS the app needs to change manually it’s annoying

I use scheduled dark mode but I have YouTube set in permanent dark mode. I DO however have an option to set it to change automatically and it's been there for a while. I'm starting to think Google for some reason hasn't rolled it out to everyone.

The main reason I am selling my iPad is due to the crappy YouTube app. YouTube is a big part of my life and the app is a disgrace. No PIP, no way to select text, no way to translate comments, no way to open multiple tabs, no way to play audio in the background, an incredibly complex, multi-step process to make videos full screen and then make them normal again and then finally quit them, etc. Every second using that app makes me want to throw the thing against a wall.

I just keep mine in dark mode all the time. Switched it to dark mode and forgot about.

dark looks so much better than glaring white

It’s such a crap app, i’m constantly having issues like black screens, sound dropping out, low quality videos… and that interface… so slow and clunky.

For those who don't have auto dark mode switching try this

  1. Uninstall YouTube App
  2. Reinstall the App but do not log in to any account
  3. You will see a little pop up asking whether you want to enable dark mode according to system setting (you may have to force close the app and reopen the app to see that)

This worked for me on the iPad but not iPhone.

I got the update this morning on both an iPad Air 2, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Everything looks good, and I did check in the app store, and the privacy data is there. That's how I knew it had been updated, even before checking here.

Out of all the Google apps, I mostly use YouTube, and Google Home. Then Gmail (iPad). I also have the Google app installed. The main reason for me installing the Google and Gmail apps is for 2 factor authentication. Google uses those apps on the devices for verification of genuine login. As far as Gmail, I usually just connect my account to third party email clients. I put the actual Gmail app on the iPad because I also like the interface.

With all this said is I'm glad Google updates are finally starting to roll out. All their other services I can use through other means EXCEPT Google Home. There is no web app for that, and I use that to control and mange the Google part of the smart home.

I haven’t updated the YouTube app on my iPad since 2018. I don’t want the stories or whatever features they have cloned from other apps and added to this video player. Sadly the app started showing a pop up message this week saying I have to update or quit.
Honestly, with desktop-first Safari being a thing I switched yo using the site and it’s loads better than the app!

"finally"??
Why would we be looking for updates every two months? Updates to any app seldom add useful new features for users - most "updates" are back-end tweaks to tracking and marketing tools to better harvest data. The fewer updates the better.
For the past 2 months a lot of Google iOS Apps haven’t been updated as usual while their Android counterparts have been. Macrumors has been covering this strange behavior from Google because it believes it’s due to Apple’s Privacy App Label requirements.
