I have my own way of using YouTube and in the process, "escaping" the YT ads.

For example, although no link was provided in post 1 for the video above,
"the future of qd-oled gaming monitors"
... I was able to open YT, paste that into the search bar, and then open the video without ads or interruptions.

You just have to know what to do, and be willing to use that method consistently.
I would explain it, but no one here would try or use it.

But I will say that "the key" is using a 3rd party browser (NOT Safari), set it to "wipe itself clean" after every session (by quitting), and choosing to right-click on a video and open it in a new, PRIVATE window...

And no tabs, ever.

The stat about more on TV was from the YouTube CEO in Feburary.

Here is his post about it:

From said blog: "And people aren’t just watching YouTube on their computers or phones. TV has surpassed mobile and is now the primary device for YouTube viewing in the U.S. (by watch time),"

I would like to see how they measure this. For YouTube TV, I bet it's on TV's more. But for everyday watching videos here and there, I bet it's mobile.

I really hate this business model...YouTube was ad-free when it launched in 2005 - 2010ish. It purposely bent the rules to drive viewership to their site and make them the best video service in town.

Then over the past decade once they established pretty much a monopoly, they forced disruptive ads. And now they crammed more ads per minute. And they can do so because there isn't a comparable alternative.

This business model sucks.
The business model sucks for you maybe, not YouTube. No one is twisting your arm to watch YouTube videos and you can pay $13.99/mo to YouTube to get rid of the ads. It’s a great business model. You have no right to ad free content. You may feel entitled to it but nothing in life is free.

Stop watching! Problem solved.

Well said. People will vote with everything except their attention and time.

I just don't watch YouTube. Simple.

And if viewership declines rapidly YouTube bean counters will get the message. But alas, as you point out users are addicted to YouTube and even though they complain about ads they will continue to endure them.

The silliest complaints claim monopoly and want the government to get rid of ads for them.

It says so in the blog post:

The entire internet nowadays sucks. It used to be about genuine connection and creative content. Today it’s all about chasing clout and extracting profit. The internet as we knew it is dying.
“The entire internet nowadays sucks”. That’s a wild take!

And it’s coming from the person commenting on an article on… the internet 😂. Maybe you’re not using the Internet properly. I have a career because of the Internet, I have a second, although humble, income from the internet. The entire internet does not suck, some parts of it definitely do, some parts of it definitely don’t. Perhaps you’ll find a career and/or income from the internet when you grow up.

I saw this. My point is does this include the subscriptions to YouTube TV.

Gotcha. I dunno, but my teenagers have started watching YouTube on tv/computer almost exclusively, so they can continue to multitask with their friends on Snapchat via their phones.

Define Ad Blockers. Does YouTube mean blocking tracking Ads? Those Ad’s are criminal in all aspects. My Ad Blockers block tracking Ad’s, the no tracking Ad’s are present. Pretty much sums up where Google business model resides, criminal.

No ads on YouTube as been worth it for a while now. And you get access to YouTube music. I use Spotify primarily but it’s cool to switch up the algorithm and discover new playlists from time to time. It was worth it to me to take Netflix down to the ad tier to offset the cost of YouTube premium.

Well I still prefer black screens than anti-climatic medication ads.

Also, tried YouTube music and it’s garbage next to Apple Music.

Ads on YouTube have some become so ridiculous it's almost unwatchable. It's like Nolan Sorrento is running things.

Hopefully, platform is digging its own grave for the competitors to dive in.

I had been noticing the ever-increasing video length on the platform, and that I constantly have to skip to get to the main point. Not good, especially when there is Instagram with short and concise content.

Also, many creators on YouTube are toxic, comments are full of bots and Google did nothing to curb their presence. This is especially crucial in our harsh geopolitical context where it is impossible to verify something easily.

These same creators even expect patreon subscriptions and donations. Back when YouTube was actually cool, people have been putting out videos just for the people to watch, to become well-known, with zero (or small) financial incentive whatsoever. And now they will say straight-in-your-face how it is their “only job” and that they need to “feed their families” lol. I mean, why should I or anyone else care?
