thanks I think shrines are what I'm looking for, but I dunno where to go? just feel aimless,
from the tall tower with dude chilling telling me to pause the game to be aware of what I can do, Im assuming he means ability like magnet and throwing those bombs?
Also in the forest where the dude said I could use his cooking pot but when I hold food and throw and point it at the cooking pot it lands outside of that? Such a noob ha

A number of us couldn't find all the shrines from the tower. One thing that worked for me was to go along the great walls, along the perimeter of the plateau, and look inwards as you work your way around the circle. You'll most likely find all the shrines this way (and a lot of other stuff to investigate, as well).
Sorry if this has been asked already but I hate spoilers so I didn't want to read the thread. Anyway, what is the little audio icon and the one above it mean?
Good pausing point to return to life for a minute.
Thanks guys.
Without using a guide how would you know to mix pepper fish and boar for the proper clothes to chase around in the cold part of the map? Just guessing? Or ?

The guy mentions it as one of his favorite dishes, but has forgotten one ingredient. While experimenting to find that one ingredient is how I discovered it.
I think I've gone almost as far as I can on my own with out a guide (83 shrines, beat the beasts), getting to the point where exploring on my own without direction is getting boring. I've got a list of small side missions I think I'll tackle first, but I think it's almost time for me to pull out a guide.

Most of the cooking is either "face valid" (i.e., eating spicy food to heat yourself up) or hints are contained in the descriptions of the food items.
If somebody gives you something (like an elixir, or a meal) you can also go into the item menu, and in addition to "Eat" you should also see "Recipe"...which gives you the ingredients, like a recipe!

I am trying to get to the devine beasts objective and I keep getting destroyed pretty easily as I only have 4 hearts. Seems I need many more and a lot better weaponry before even trying to get into those missions.

4 hearts is actually enough as I was able to beat one of the Divine Beasts in that way.
The answer a lot of times is shrines. Shrines usually contain chests and many of them can have pretty good weapons or bows in them. As well, beating shrines will give you a spirit orb and you can trade in 4 of them at Goddess statues in order to increase your heart count (by 1) or your stamina bar (by 20% or 1/5). You can find the statues at the Temple of Time on the Great Plateau or the towns that you will eventually come across.

It's a bit of a grind. You gotta do the shrines and get the orbs to trade for hearts. Actually a lot of grind lol. Too much for me to grind I stopped a while back. My son's been playing I just watch him play. He went for stamina before going for hearts with the orbs. He maxed out on stamina (3 full rings) and did all four divine beasts with 15 hearts and heavily upgraded armors. Just found all captured memories. Still grinding for more stuff but he can finish the story whenever he pleases.

Don't forget, you can eat something in the middle of a fight & replenish your hearts!
As others have said, finding the shrines and converting the Spirit Orbs into hearts (stamina is helpful too) will also help you out. You will find Shrines by exploring, a number are right by roads, but a good many are also tucked away in out of the way places.
Minor Spoiler:
Have you found the Fairy Fountain by Kakariko Village? Among other things, you can get the Great Fairy to upgrade your armor, which will raise your defenses, so you don't lose as many hearts when struck.
Slightly Bigger Spoiler, but you may not know this if you aren't familiar with Zelda Lore:
By the Fairy Fountain, have you captured any fairies? Similar to a bug, just wait/sneak up on them and press A. When you die, they will revive you...this can be very helpful with tough enemies.

Defo cook stuff! throw in a bunch of apples or other basic stuff and cook it and you get easily 4+ hearts replenished! You do get one-shotted by a lot of enemies anyway so besides the weaponry you may want to work on your foot-work, lol. Strafing, jumping with counterattacks and so on (if you're not doing it already, I just started doing it since I came along fine until now without but it's way easier (and obligatory later on anyway I guess..).

I've only completed 40 shrines (and I have found 81 Korok seeds!). I definitely think there are many ways to go about playing the game & completing it. I have been doing ok at combat, even though I have 2 left thumbs when it comes to maneuvering around. If I was even more skilled (i.e., didn't mash on the left button and go into a stealth crouch in the middle of combat), I would be sailing through this!
I have the guide as well, but it is still in its plastic wrap. Not gonna look at it until I've gone through at least twice!
the article is at eurogamer.net, but it is about a Youtube video of someone paragliding all the way from one end of Hyrule to the other. Obviously, some spoilers, but not much more than what is in the tip menu. I'm watching it now, haven't gotten to the end, but it appears that Hyrule is about 10-11km diagonally across?
