I'm hoping that, since the Zune HD's running modified WinCE, Skyfire can be ported over. If MS allows people to develop alternative browsers for it then I'll snap one up in an instant. Other than that, the OLED screen and user-replaceable battery, as well as a far more streamlined UI really make this appealing.

Nahhhh....microsoft are not imitators...their marketplac player bears absolutely no resemblance to the touch, just like when they said the original zune was a rembranding of toshiba...No Imitation At All, ms only innovates!

Btw, since this thread features Balmer with his known sweat issues and the zune at hand, shouldn't it be called:
"Zune HD SWEATY hands on Demo and Impressions "

Damn, this glass keeps slipping out of my sweaty grasp

Bose headphones

I agree with the statements about Bose. There are others that are better and cheaper. I bought them and I have to live with them (not that bad). But I am glad that you agree that Sony with MP3/4 with regards to pure music quality are much better then Apples.

Before you fanboys start off, I have an Imac a Macbook an Extreme an Iphone and a Touch but I also know how to be impartial.

I think it looks like a nice device, I'm just not sure it has enough to pull market share from the Touch. The radio thing is unappealing to anyone who doesn't listen to radio anyway, and the HD output is cool, but I wish it used just a cable, not a dock. Yesterday I was at my parents' house, and had some videos of my daughter I wanted to show them. Had I had the Z-HD, I could have outputted over hdmi. But carrying a dock is inconvenienent.

I know the Touch I can get composite out, but that ouputs far lower quality.

On a separate note. Am I alone in thinking that the interface needs some work? For one, moving your hand up and over all the content to hit a 'back' button seems clumsy. I know it's a convention on window based GUIs that have menu/toolbars along the top of the window (like all Mac and Windows OSs do) but it needn't be on a new handheld OS.

To be fair, the top left is the standard location of the back button on iPhone/Touch apps; Notes and Settings for example. This is not a bad thing because if you're hand is in a natural place on the screen its easier for your fingers to reach for the top of the screen than the bottom.

At first glance I really like the Zune's OS, but obviously I'd need to play with it to know for sure.

It's a convention on touchscreen handhelds to put the most used controls at the bottom (so your finger doesn't cover the screen while using them)... and the least used at the top, if at all.

However, I do find it a pain on handheld OSX to keep reaching up to go Back in apps. I would personally prefer having a dedicated physical Back button under the screen, next to the Menu one. One point of a handheld is to make it as easy to use as possible, especially one-handed.

Who said sony was better?

LOL @ "compete with the iPod". What a joke. I went on one of the official Zune site's.. it has 16 members and like 2-3 comments per update.. lol. People are excited!! Almost a whole subdivision worth!

Hd ??

Yeah, "you can really see the hi-def there"
what the hell is he talking about? How many pixels does the screen have?
What's the point of popping a 4inch full-HD screen into a handhold device? So if you put it under a microscope it would still look amazing ??

i wonder how long it willl take to overheat and M$ will ask users to send it back to them for repairs

The only thing it has is HD radio?

I have Sirius radio, and I quite enjoy it. It's part of the reason I haven't listened to terrestrial radio in ages. Why would I want to listen to crappy ad-infested regular radio (of which Chicago is particularly bad) when I can have tons of stations with higher quality with no ads? Couple that with my iPod, and I don't even know what stations are on the air anymore in Chicago.

I wish Apple would partner with Sirius, but I highly doubt that would ever happen.

Sony is not better, unless one equates the artificial boosting and equalizing of sound files with better quality.

No, one equates better sound with better quality. It's subjective, but honestly if something sounds better to someone, you're not going to come along and say "No, this other thing is as good or better." Not to MY ears it's not. And from a technical standpoint, they DO use better audio technology.

Noted, but did you read the part where I couldn't care less about terrestrial radio?

I have iHeart Radio on my iPod Touch, and haven't used it once. There's never anything of value on terrestrial radio, except the same 20 songs.

...and NPR, but there's an app for that.:D

Funny - MySpace and MS would be a match made in heaven, in the clutter department - with pimped out pages having an average load time of 100 seconds.
