A noteworthy development regarding what is currently the most popular app in the iOS App Store (at least for iPhone) qualifies as Apple-related news by most measures I can imagine.

That said, we get to look forward to application bloat and a Zynga icon border.

Great news for OMGPOP. You can't fault them here for selling their game for $200 mill. That's more money then they'll ever see in their lifetimes so kudos to them for developing a widly popular game and making serious money off of it.

Draw Something was pretty buggy and lacked a lot of really cool features. Hopefully Zynga will make those improvements and give it that "with friends" quality.

I've never used Draw Something but expect it to become all about money just like all of the other Zynga games.

You're prompted to update before being allowed to play.

Yes, Zynga does this with their games, forced updates or you don't play.

Why all the Zynga hate? Perhaps Zynga will improve it so it takes <1 hour to load, doesn't repeat words, and actually has an objective?

The only problem with Zynga is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don't think of original ideas, and they don't bring much culture into their products.

I actually thought Draw Something was by Zynga when I first saw it...a lot of the user interface mimics their other "With Friends" games.

I agree that some of the words are difficult to draw without providing more clues (especially for someone like me who doesn't want to put a single letter on the screen).

I also do hope that now that it's all under Zynga and there's no fear of copyright, that they add in the chat feature as well as the ability to view the state of the game as opposed to just stats.

Feck, I only just got into this great game :(

Yes it is buggy, but it was full of promise... Now it'll become extremely slow and bloated and insist on connecting to Facebook and posting to the wall :(

Anyone know of a similar app?

Why is this game blowing up all of a sudden? Charadium has been around for a long time and it's really similar, except it has more playing modes, and ways to warn/kick out people who write words out.

Probably because it's simply called "Draw Something" and it's very easy to find in the store.

"Charadium" is not a very elegant title... and I wouldn't know what it is if I just saw it in the App Store.

That's not the only problem with Zynga by a long shot. One other big problem I'd toss out is that their approach to the 'freemium' app market almost always holds games back, significantly, from being what they potentially could be in favor of pushing in-app purchases. That, and their approach to game features and mechanics is much more heavily focused on promoting those in-app purchases over any interest in making the game more enjoyable. Some of the games they've purchased aren't as bad as others, but I doubt this will be a good development.

That said, good for the app's original author.

Agree.

Also expect it to have no new features but become bloated and buggy for no apparent reason.

Also, expect it to advertise OTHER games of theirs, which slows down the whole menu, even though they say it's AD-free. Friggen stupid.

I feel like they just paid $200 million for a head start on this game. Zynga was going to put something similar to this out no matter what, but simply paid for the name recognition and customer base.

Kind of expensive if you ask me, but I guess Zynga sees potential growth here. They'll do what they do to all Apps with the advertisements and such, but it's been successful for them so I can't really be too angry.

I wasn't a fan of the App before, so this doesn't affect me. But it's a huge App so I understand why it's on MacRumors.

What does Zynga have to gain from this? They alread have expeienced app developers and could have cloned this in a few months if they wanted to. I cannot see how they will make $200,000,000 back from this game. Especially as others say - it's lacking the features many others have, particularly competitive play.

There is no way to play without giving them personnel information.
My guess it's just to grow their database.

Well done to the OMGPOP folks, $200m, thats a hell of a price for pretty much just one successful app.

You mean like Zynga's other gem, Farmville?

Crop, plant, grow biz oh what a relief it is.

Someone said $200m for this ONE app and how are they going to make this money back.
Did you read the article? It says they bought OMGPOP - the whole studio!

For that $200m they also get all the staff as well - a great investment for more creativity and vision.
OMGPOP might have more games in the pipeline - are any others actually released? If so they get all those too!
