Take the original quote
And break it into three quotes
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to play.
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to meet.
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to make friends.
Learn to use a list before you criticise.
I quite realize that that's what they meant, but English grammar doesn't quite work that way. If I say, "I want to break, beat, cook and eat some eggs", that does not mean
- I want to break
- I want to beat
- I want to cook
- I want to eat some eggs
No, in the construction of a list of verbs that can all take objects, when an object is applied to the last one, it is implied that the object applies to the preceding verbs, as well. While it's certainly true that this rule isn't always obeyed, it doesn't change the fact that it is the proper way to construct such a list. Thus, the proper interpretation of what I said would be:
- I want to break some eggs
- I want to beat some eggs
- I want to cook some eggs
- I want to eat some eggs
And the proper interpretation of what they said would be:
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to play friends.
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to meet friends.
- creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to make friends.
If they had wanted to properly construct their statement without breaking that sentence into three separate sentences, all they needed to do was add objects for the other two verbs, like this:
Creating games around the ethos of giving people a place to play games, meet new people and make friends.
Really, there are plenty of means by which that sentence could have been constructed properly and conveyed exactly what they were trying to convey. Were this an off the cuff comment from some exec being stopped by a reporter, I'd have a bit more sympathy. But this is a press release posted on their website. They need to have someone who actually knows a bit about English read their press releases before they post them.
Try to understand what my criticism is before you try to tear it down.
