Right on Built .....

DN6FNs seem to be the WORST. My original (which I only had in my hands for ten minutes before I reboxed and made an appointment at the Genius Bar for replacement) was DN6FN. Blotchy screen with bleed all over.

The DLXFK is perfect.

Agreed it was horrible! But the DLXFL I have is damn perfect! So happy with it (and the genius folks that assisted me with the replacement).

Much props to User512 for creating this list! Very nice of him to keep updating with everyone's info :D

Quick question guys if you can answer ASAP as I'm on way to Target.....

If the iPad I get has awful backlight bleed do I exchange for another since they got a good amount in stock right now OR should I just get a refund and purchase at a later time?

If I try to get a different one from the same store obviously would one assume it'd be just as bad being from the same batch?

Hmm

Hmm

Just picked up a 3G ATT version from Target. It's backlight bleeding is worse than my 32GB wifi I got on release weekend. SN# DLXFJ

DQTFF - bleeding, bottom right, top left, top right. Crappy iPhone photo attached.

I would check the serial numbers (they appear on the box)...If you can find a DLXFK or DLXFL, you have a greater chance of getting a perfect unit.

If they only have DN6FNs, I'd pass...I have not yet seen a single one (either the one I initially bought, or any one on here) that seemed OK.

It is really easy to check the serial numbers on the boxes...If the salesperson gripes, explain the common defects that units such as the DN6FNs have.

^thanks so much will do walking into the store right now, I'll report my findings :)

I'm on my 9th and finally got one that is tolerable.

As for the serial#
1) Unknown 4.3.1 NIB From Best Buy
2) Unknown 4.3.1 NIB From Best Buy
3) Unknown 4.3.1 NIB From Frys
4) Unknown 4.3.1 NIB From Best Buy
5) DN6FN 4.3.3 64GB 3G NIB 5/21 From Apple Store
6) DLXFD 4.3.3 64GB 3G NIB 5/24 From Best Buy
7) DLXFQ 64GB 3G NIB 5/29 From Best Buy
8) DLXFQ 64GB 3G NIB 5/29 From Best Buy
9) DLXFR 4.3.3 64GB 3G NIB 6/1 From Best Buy
(Not Flawless, But very tolerable)

I'm surprised I'm not blacklisted for so many return at Best Buy.

Well anyways I ended up getting SquareTrade Insurance, Just incase...

What I did notice on 8th iPad is if I grip the bottom right side the bleeding would increase and releasing the grip it would go way.
I believe it's the design. Too much internal pressure on the screen.

BTW, it would be nice if people would post some of these 100% no backlight 'perfect' screens because the reality is they don't exist. Every screen has some backlight bleeding.

Please tell me you're not serious when you said you're on your 9th iPad 2 before getting one that is without any backlight bleeding?

Anyway, congrats on getting a good one. :D Man, I just hope that I don't have to go through 9 iPad 2 units like you do before finding one that is decent enough to hang on to. :(

This is exactly like mine, DLXFR, from best buy, 64GB 3G (I even have the gripping=more bleed)

I am still thinking About if I might want to see if i can get a better one or just put a screen protector on and live with it, but for almost 1k I am not sure

Opps. I meant the 8th had the grip issue.
But yes I bought and returned eight iPad 2 to finally get the 9th with the best screen ;)

Apple is going to have iPad 2 refurbished sale really soon. :p

Since the screen is glued, and not clipped, on, my guess is that Apple is not going to refurb for the backlight bleed issue...It would be incredibly difficult...Removing the screen...removing all the adhesive...ensuring the remaining surface is completely clean and even....Something tells me if they couldn't get it right the first time, they are not going to try to refurb for this known issue.

I may be wrong...but somehow I don't think so...They'll just keep reselling the returned units as refurbs...cleaned up cosmetically...until they land in the hands of people who don't care about backlight bleed...

9 isn't really that many. :)

I went through 6 of them within an hour and half at the Best Buy store. They
opened up 6 64gb 3G AT&T iPads for me. Only one looked great and I brought it
home. It is just as "perfect" as the two photos other have posted above, so I
will not bore you guys with more photos. I'm EXTREMELY ANAL when it comes
to backlight bleeding
and if I can't see any bleeding in a totally-dark room,
then it's "perfect" enough for me.

(the only way to properly inspect this is to close the door, turn off all the
light and ensure there is absolute darkness, close my eyes for at least
5 minutes
so the eyes are completely used to the darkness... then
stare at the iPad at every possible angle. ... nope, no bleeding... then
repeat the entire test again an hour later, after playing with the iPad for
at least one hour.... still don't see any light bleeding.... I'm now happy as
a clam)

Not really sure what Best Buy will be doing with the 5 iPads that I rejected
yesterday.... :)

I have seen ones that are even cleaner than the one pictured. They had no perceptible bleed. On the other hand, every one of them was what I termed the reddish screen. So, tradeoff was contrast and clarity (and in many cases some fairly undesirable edge falloff in brightness) for no bleed. Bummer.

Big deal

Is this really this much of a big deal? I don't have an iPad so I don't know if it would bother me, but is it so much of a deal that you don't want to play on it or that you would rather have not bought the iPad in the first place? If the answer is yes then I think that you guys are all wimps and don't have anything better to do than make fun of the iPad (by the way if you don't want your iPad I'll be glad to take it off your hands), but if the answer is no, then why are you even reading this in the first place?
