Honestly I have about pulled the trigger on a current 15" MPB...

Then I here all of these rumors about the new 2012 models..

I can see both the 15" and 17" including the quad cores there is enough room in the cases for those.

More so I could handle a MBP without the optic drive, it would be different but most of the things I use I can get by with a external and I would be happy, heck if I got a current gen I would have replaced the optic with a second HD anyways.

My bigger concern is that the MBP line which I believe needs to stay as power as it is now, mainly for professionals that travel and still need the power. I program in IOS, develop webpages with CSS, PHP and flash. I even do some minor picture and video editing but that is mainly family stuff. I love the Airs, they are great but I need more in the GPU/HD and power areas. Plus the option for replacing the optic with a second HD is awesome for dual/triple booting into windows and linux.

I found this site and it provides some interesting info - http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/02/the-next-generation-macbook-pro-2012/

IF the new 2012 followed what was said there I would be happy, I would love the MPB with ivy-bridge quad core, ATI HD 7770M... Down fall would be the single SSD and no optic, but if I had to take no optic but have a choice for a 750+ HD I would still be ok.

IMO the author of that Gizmodo article has been smoking some pretty potent stuff.

I agree with some of his synopsis however I just can't see a Discrete GPU in such a thin design. Rest assured if it is possible, I think we may be in for some more Apple heat problems

That's what leads me to believe the 2012 refresh isn't "ultra thin" like the air, and only marginally thinner the current models. If they redesign the 13inch pro to be as thin as the current Air, what happens to the Air? It doesn't make much sense. I think the new Pros are going to be a little thinner, but a lot more powerful.

Or Apple will get rid of one of the models. Ah, I'm rambling.

I think it's likely that they would simply eliminate the 13" Pro.

What I would like to see, is an option to remove the Optical drive before shipping, so have a MBP with no slot for DVD, instead, squeeze in dedicated graphics into the 13" and also a second HDD.

I dislike that I am using an optibay (as of tonight) and as such will have a slot with no use, except to touch it... I guess...

I'd like the MBP to have this option, so those of us with no need for ODDs on a daily basis can use a thunderbolt BluRay or DVD drive (whatever they can provide) and just have an SSD boot drive and a HDD for data...

unless...the air becomes a little thicker and the pro becomes a little thinner and that will be the new line up :p could be?

GPUs are shrinking, CPUs are shrinking ODD are disappearing, it could just happen

You could be right. The iPad 3 is slightly thicker then the iPad 2 (according to reports).

I just don't feel as if it could happen. We'll just have to wait and see I guess

i'm really hoping they don't completely abandon the 'work-laptop' idea when the refresh hits. maybe they'll have the mba in 11/13/15 and a redesigned pro in 15/17 with high end graphics, anti-glare screens, and a few more ports.

Agreed. I will refuse to buy an Apple computer if they crippled it. I really want to like Apple though. I really hope it doesn't disappoint.

I think the MBP will remain in it's present configuration minus the optical drive + IB + higher resolution LCD's. I don't see them changing the available drive selections to meet the demands of the pro users, in fact, I think we'll see a 1TB spindle drive as an option. Probably an improved GPU.

However, the big change will be in the "growth" segment and that's the MBA's.

They will introduce a 15" MBA which will be very similar to the 13" with perhaps a 512gig hard drive as an option, and of course, an IB processor. I suspect the resolution will be 1680 X 1050. I don't think they'd go the 16:9 route because it's a little too much for the consumer segment. I do expect to see better battery life on the 15" and 17".

This will be followed by a 17 MBA with similar specs but higher screen resolutions. Maybe a 1920 X 1200 resolution on this one.

Nothing too dramatic, just enough to put a little more distance between themselves and the ultra book segment.

I doubt that there will be a 17" MBA. A 15" MBA seems perfectly plausible to me, however, and while the discontinuation of the 13" MBP also seems plausible, I hope that Apple reprices and respecs the 15" MBP to fill the 13" MBP's price points if Apple does drop the 13" MBP.

I also doubt the 17" MBA. I think the 13" MBP equates to a 13" MBA +ODD +HDD option for storage. Other than that I see no reason for both to exist.

I'd be happy to see the MBA lineup to stay at the 11" and 13". A memory bump would be nice since 4GB doesn't go as far as it used to. The MBP should remain 13, 15, 17 but they need a dedicated graphics card in the 13" to call it "Pro". It'd also be nice if that damn SD card were flush to the system. Every other manufacturer manages to do it...

Not quite. Your leaving out the extra CPU muscle and the fact one of 'em can actually be opened up to upgrade.

Says who? Is this some kind of law? Strange they've been getting away with it this long.

things i would like to see

macbook pro:
i don't care about redesign

intel core i7 mobile 4 core (8 threads)
AMD radeon HD 7770m (maybe 7870m)
8GB DDR3 ram
no disc drive
128GB SSD boot (or smaller, like 40GB)
1TB HDD for everything else
1920x1080 screen for 15 and 17 inch.

anything else? no thats it! that would be an awesome build!

7870 won't happen. It runs too hot. And I for one am hoping that they keep the 16:10 aspect ratio the same. I want either a 1920x1200 on the 15" or a 3360x2100 retina display.

how about add two more ram slots so we can get 32GB? Would a dual i7 CPU work? That'd be awesome when plugged in, have 8 cores and 16 threads running. They could have it designed so that the second CPU is throttled down on battery power. Dual SSDs in RAID 0 would be awesome, imagine the speed!

Even more, they need to put in dual dual channel thunderbolt chips, so that I can drive 4 Thunderbolt Displays and attach 8 other thunderbolt devices!

All I can say is POWER!!! UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!!

I've decided to go ahead and wait for the redesign. HOPING that Apple stays true to what power users may want.

Get rid of the ODD, maybe a tad thinner, and a slight bump in the specs from the late 2011. That would be grand.

Of course keeping a matte screen option, and the hdd/ram user replaceable.

/sign... That is, what I want.

Same here, and sadly, I keep going back to the Thinkpads for their keyboards and overall hardware capabilities, but I prefer OS X over Windows. Tried the hackintosh route and it's a world of pain.

Recently cancelled an order on a W520 Thinkpad this week, and am going to hold out to see what Apple comes out with.

I know that Macs aren't for gaming... but I really want to simplify my life down to one computer. Also, I prefer the reliability of a Mac over Windows. (Mind you, my current installation is Vista, so that might be the problem right there.)

In any case, I'm actually hoping for an upgraded CPU + Discrete Graphics so that I can play SimCity4/5 and StarCraft 2. I'll install bootcamp if I have to. Can I play these on a 2011? You betcha. But I'm hoping I can do them better and prettier on a 2012.

In the news report on the front page from about an hour ago, there's a little brief about Liquidmetal shipping out some of its products.

In a bit of curious timing, Liquidmetal Technologies late yesterday announced that it had begun "shipping commercial parts to several of its customers world-wide". While the customers are unnamed, shipments are said to have begun in December and will be continuing in the months ahead. Apple acquired the rights to Liquidmetal's technology related to amorphous metal alloys for use in all consumer electronics applications back in 2010, while Liquidmetal has retained its rights in all other fields of use.

I remember all the rumors last year about liquidmetal and the MBP…

These are what we call opinions. In my opinion (there's that key word again) the 13" MBP isn't to scale with the 15" and 17" since it does not have a dedicated graphics card. Also in my opinion, there is a very minor difference between the 13" MBA and the 13" MBP.

IB has a quad-core at 35W. Based on that, I don't see it being an issue for Apple to still slightly slim down the 13" after removing the ODD, and still calling it a Pro. A quad-core i7 with HD4000 would be plenty sufficient in my opinion.

So, it seems a pretty sure thing the new PacMook Bro will come with a "retina" display. Does anyone have an idea as to whether it might be possible to buy the display only and retro-fit say a late 2011 15" with the retina screen? Would be great if I could get some higher definition on my machine that way.

No.
