I may as well buy now. New design's aren't always perfected until the next update before the first major re-design. As the current machines are perfect.

I'm afraid you're right. However, as much as I would like a current MacBook Pro, I keep thinking there's an optical drive that's wasting space in there. That's the only thing that makes me want to wait.

It's annoying as if I buy now, there's still going to be rumors. If I buy the 2012 model, there's going to be rumors regarding the next model after that. I just can't win.

That was my thought process. I like a little meat to my laptop anyways. I'm running an SSD & HDD setup now so optical drive doesn't mean much to me but I could not afford to go out and buy the 512GB SSD to match my 160GB SSD with it's 750GB HDD. I need that secondary drive. Plus, I'd rather wait a year and get it when it is more polished.

True true. Which Macbook Pro (or Air) did you purchase? How are you finding it? Will you be bothered about the 2012 MBP refresh if there is one or not? :p

There's always the optibay route, but I find that knowing the slot for the optical drive is still there, rendered useless, is taking the beautiful original design and turning it into something it was never supposed to be in the first place... design by committee. If you can bear it though, good for you, you've made the right choice.

I'm 3 years in on my MacBookPro and I think I could make it another 2 at least. But this display is starting to look old as compared to the retina displays. And what about touch functionality? I imagine that's on its way as well.

Are you talking about a touch screen on the new Macbooks? I highly doubt that's happening.

Argh!!

I keep going back and forth trying to decide whether to wait for the new (redesigned?) models or just go ahead and get a late 2011.

I need an antiglare display, and who knows if the new ones will have them or if they will be available right away? Will the new models be without major issues? The unibodies have had a lot of time to be perfected, and idk how i feel about going for a 1st gen redesign.

I know it may bother some people, but I love the idea of removing the ODD to replace it with a second hard drive. If the redesign removes the ODD, will they make good use of that empty space? Just making the device thinner does not count as making good use of empty space.

I just don't know! Will the redesign allow the ram to be upgraded? I shudder to think what 16 gb of ram from apple would cost..

I know what you mean here. I'm deciding the same on what to do. As tempting as it is to pull the trigger for me, I feel like I'll wait until April/May and see what's on offer. Besides, the re-design is only rumors at the moment. :p

I'm also crossing my fingers to see a MacBook Pro update soon. I'm currently using a Windows PC and the MacBook Pro I'm planning on buying will be my first Mac ever. I really hope the new upgrade brings a better screen to the MBP 13'' as well as other improvements but without compromising the overall great design that the current MBP generation has.

My plan is to wait another month and see what Apple is preparing for us in April. If by then neither Apple or rumors points to a MBP upgrade I guess I'll buy the current generation and just hope for the best.

Bleh I could actually make use of 32. Ram is a weird thing. It's possible for me to exist with much less, but having quite a lot makes the computing experience much smoother as the system essentially doesn't even touch swap. On a redesign, remember it's just a rumor. It's a popular rumor because it's consistent with Apple's design mantra. They shrink things as much as possible wherever possible and place a high priority on aesthetics, trackpad use, etc. A lot of that is wasted on me. I don't care how the computer looks. I tend to plug in a mouse or tablet for finer control, and many of my priorities are not those of the average user. If anything they could pay better attention to powerful features when it comes to the macbook pro, as the Air already covers their mass market lighter computing market segment quite well.

Historically Apple favored a clear delineation between product lines. I realize that not everyone cares about every feature, but there are quite a few things that would appeal to a good portion of their more demanding users especially if the pattern of leveraging downward like mac pro to macbook pro continues. I doubt they'll go with my preferred design route on any given machine though. Even if it would benefit a good portion of their users, their marketing is just so finely tuned to get you to buy something anyway.

From past experience, I don't buy the second the new ones hit. I attempt to wait out any weird issues because it seems like I always encounter them. I'm not expecting any major display updates, especially on that model. Also keep in mind that an updated form factor is merely a rumor.

Well, then I hope they leave the current design and give us a nice spec boost

Excited to see what the gpu options are. I may be ditching my iMac and going with a MBP if there's a display update as well.

The current MacBook Air 13'' has a really nice screen, way better than the MBP 13'' in my opinion. That's why I'm hoping to see an upgrade there.

Last MBP 'update' was released in Oct. 2011? What's the average time frame between updates?

7-8 months I think. I would hate to spend £2000 or so on a Macbook Pro only to find out the Macbook Pro gets updated with Ivy Bridge. But then again, there's always something better around the corner with technology :(

so the new Pros should come out around July? and new Airs around this time?

hoping to sell my MBA for one of the new Pros and just use an iPad until they release since I'm not in school or anything. just don't know how long i can survive without a real computer in my hands.

Ivy Bridge gets released on April 8th (4 weeks today) I think. So it could be anytime after that. :)

Has anyone seen the Ivy based Ultra books that have been release? They have touch screens. Not too sure about how I feel about that but I do wonder if Apple will implement it into their designs.

I'm excited to see the redesign. Hoping that it doesn't just -look- like a Macbook Air (not that there's anything wrong with that-- I just want to see a redesign because I'm a design junkie.)

I'm used to reselling laptops every year to upgrade, but this year it all honestly comes down to how nice this redesign is going to look. If the redesign isn't all that amazing / different, I'm thinking of going the Optibay route for all the extra space (got a 120GB SSD in my MBP, it's fast but more space is always nice...Got the factory HDD laying around ;) ).

Is everyone's best (and earliest guess) for April / May? I was hoping late Feb since that's when the early 2011s came out but that's long past now...

I think Apple has done studies that say this isn't practical and Steve Jobs has publicly said as much. It's much too tedious to reach across a keyboard for long periods of time. Clearly Intel is banking on Windows 8 Metro to sell this. I doubt this concept will take off even with the help of MS's new OS.

But what the hell do I know? I'm old enough to remember when bottled water arrived and confidently predicted it too would be a passing fad. :)

I really want to buy a Macbook Pro now... but I know I'll be gutted when the new ones get released but there's always something newer around the corner.

What shall I do?

Ah well i've jumped the gun and brought a 13" MacBook Pro this week, needed a new notebook and this is my first jump into Mac OS.
I suppose i'll see what gets announced and if its a major improvement there's always the resell option for me but in all honesty i'm very happy with my purchase.

I'm new to this. What time is this line supposed to be replenished?

April (earliest) Aug (latest) - we think :)
