I agree that the "Optical Drive" is becoming more of a redundant component each day.

Use that space for either another SSD ( no HDD`s or HyBrid allowed LOL ) , or for a new longer lasting battery. :)

The new rumors are nice. I hope it releases before the end of July. Do you think Mountain Lion will be a free upgrade? If not, I may wait until August or so and snag the special back to school deal they usually have and get a free ipod touch!

I just hope they keep in discrete graphics, and a high performance card at that.

My biggest hopes (which I think are fairly realistic)
1. Hi-Res Displays
2. Thinner & lighter w/o lowering CPU and GPU performance

Other hope (but less realistic)
1. Hard drive + SSD combo (the fact that a user would have to manage two separate storage devices leads me to believe that apple would not do this...)

I think there's a decent change we'll see new MBPs in April-May. I don't think they'd wait until Mountain Lion to release them because it seems like that would be around August.

Why would they release Mountain Lion with the new MBP's when they can wait a few months and make it an upgrade you have to pay for? That sounds more realistic. I hope they come out by April or May.

The MacBook Pro is due for a major update this year if Apple update cycles can be relied on. There are some rumors flying around that the MacBook Pro range is going to be made similar to the Air range of laptops. True or not, what would you like to see in an updated MacBook Pro.

For me:

A hybrid drive (Like the Seagate Momentus XT) at $250 for a 750GB this should be possible without driving prices too high. Not happening. HDD are a thing of the past and its time to move to SSD

A higher resolution screen. I agree

Better USB / FireWire / Thunderbolt port layout allowing for multiple peripherals with different size plugs to operate at the same time (Right now I have to use an extension cable because the USB ports are too close to each other). And while we are at it lets upgrade the USB 2.0 to USB 3.0
I agree with this as well although i think they will take out the firewire and ethernet ports due to size constraints.
Better Battery Life (Always a plus)
/B]

Drop the SD Card slot for a Compact Flash slot or give us the option - Pro Cameras use Compact Flash and they are faster. Not happening. Only a handfull of pro photographers use compact flash, the majority of users use SD

Better sound - perhaps using a 2.1 system (Two speakers and a micro sub woofer, would give far better sound). It will never sound as good as a pair of externals so i see no point

A dedicated HDMI port No point. thunderbolt is much better and more versatile

BluRay Drive? Do you think Apple might finally fold on this one?Keep dreaming

And lastly a peripheral I would love Apple to consider for the MacBook Pro: How about a docking station that you place your laptop onto and when its connected you can have an external keyboard, hard drives, monitors, magic mouse etc instantly connected to the mac book. Turning the MacBook Pro into a true desktop computer when its placed on the docking station. The dock could also charge the laptop and set it to sync with hard drive back ups and iCloud as soon as you made the simple connection. Apple already makes that. Its called the Thunderbolt display

Love to hear your ideas...

I'm not sure I'm against the MacBook Pro becoming more like the Air, as long as it still has the performance and capacity I need to do the work I do.

Wouldn't be hard, no different then other combo-setups. I still think Apple will either stick with a HDD or hybrid SSD/HDD as SSD prices are still high especially in larger storage amounts, just imagine the price Apple would charge if you want a 500GB drive in your MBP  lol considering their Apple markup and tax they add to their SSDs. I don't think it's cost effective enough yet, and not everyone want a small 120GB drive.

A hybrid would be great, small SSD for the OS and other programs so you get the speed and efficiency advantage of SSD, but then have larger HD for all storage of anything else (pictures, videos, works etc). Guess we'll see what happens.

I'm all for a higher res screen, better damn offer a high res antiglare option for the 13" Pro this go around LOL

Intel mobile CPU lineup?
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meld...n-mobilen-Ivy-Bridge-Prozessoren-1446556.html

The clock rates seem a bit low... Anandtech had an earlier post with i7 quad core CPUs that go up to 2.7 GHz base clock speed: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5192/ivy-bridge-mobile-lineup-overview

If apple uses the same pattern as right now, we would have

a 36XX quad core in the base 15'': 2.3 GHz
a 37XX quad core in the upgraded 15'', base 17'': 2.6 GHz
a 38XX quad core i the bto 15'', 17'': 2.7 GHz

Yeah we shouldn't get too excited about ivy bridge in terms of performance, it's a minor speed bump nothing more for mobile devices. Seems like Intel have put much of that spare overhead from the die shrink into boost the performance of the onboard GPU. Looking at the benchmarks so far the performance improvement is pretty marginal, little more than the mid cycle frequency bump intel give their cpu's (as they go from xx20 to xx60).

The big thing that will force me down to the Apple store will be the first laptop with a seriously high res screen.

Lower clock speeds mean nothing, because it is different architecture. You should know that.

I'm tempted to buy now as there's always something newer and better around the corner. But I know I'll be gutted when the new mbps come out.

What to do? :(

Do you need it now, if yes: buy
If not: don't buy

Still it's apparently another 4 months till the release. If you can't wait, buy it, it will still be as good 4 months from now.

Your call.

Well $2000 is a lot to spend and only to find out a new model will be coming out in 5 weeks time (Well, April 8 I thought Ivy Birdge is due out)?

It's a hard choice.

no it isnt, do you need it? buy it, dont need it? dont buy it.

I bought a mbp 2011 13'' just 2 weeks before the airs refreshed, and I would have preferred to buy the 13'' mba, however the c2d on the 2010 mbas was just abysmal in therms of performance, it wouldnt cut it for me. And basically my notebook just died, so I bought it.

What if Apple get rid of the 17" Macbook Pro and trim down the 15" and 13" Macbook Pros at the next refresh? How would I ever get a 17" Macbook Pro with anti-glare through Apple?

Cheers

It's hard for me, too. I did this exact same thing last year and decided to wait, so I would feel kinda stupid if I ended up getting the same MBP I passed on a year ago.

The one thing I'm holding out for is that if the refresh disappoints yet again, I can at least get the late 2011 for cheaper.

I'm trying to make do with a Mac Mini and VNCing from my Windows PC to my Mini but it's just not quite the same.

Do you think the refresh could happen in April? I guess this is just speculation.

Speculation. And from DigiTimes no less.

While it is possible that, I think that those who don't just believe whatever they read are doubting it.

Personally, I think it's likely that it will be released around Mountain Lion time.

Also, there haven't really been that many rumours regarding these new machines. Few rumours typically means crap rumours that are more guesses or speculation when it comes to Apple. Off the top of my head, the only major rumours that we've heard are the possibility of a MBA-like redesign, which is a little obvious to say the least, and more just predictions, and a potential April release, which we'd have heard a lot more about if that were so.

Not saying it won't happen, but merely that I personally feel it is relatively unlikely.

Whenever the the hardware and software releases are separate but reasonably close, the software has been a free upgrade.

I thought Ivy Bridge was due out on April 8th 2012 which is 5 weeks tomorrow. I would hate to spend $2k on a 17" MBP only to find out they've been updated 5-6 weeks later. :(

Im really hoping 2012 model will come out around june/july .. i have a early 2008 and slowly i see its dieing off :(

I was thinking of upgrading the HD to ssd.. but i think better to just wait.. any comments?
