So what's the consensus? Fake or real?

I Think I can safely assume:

General consensus is, it is fake.

But we all pray that some Apple employee poked some fun with us and added some obvious photoshop mistakes in the picture so we all scream fake and then we all happily rejoice in ecstasy when we find out

IT'S REAL!

:D:D:D

Great. Now Apple let's include a keyboard and mouse thank you.

The 5 USB ports could be true if Apple wants this to compete as a media hub.

I'm sure someone must have said this in the n pages of discussion. But I'll say it too. I highly doubt the new mac mini would have a FW800 port. Do you see FW800 on the MacBooks anymore? I think Apple views FW as a distinctly "Pro" feature now, and putting it on the Mac Mini isn't in their interest.

Hence I reckon this is a fake.

No, we would say Red Wine is soo 2000 years ago, where's the Quad Core, FW800, Mactablet, :D

It could be real, but somehow I think they would have changed the design after so many years. It's not as if they update it often so hopefully they will surprise us with a new design. :apple::D

The new Mac mini to be successful in the market must have:

1. New chipset architecture with higher system bus & faster memory for HD 1080p capabilities (Montevina or Calpella).
2. Better graphic card with PCIe bus, more graphic memory & 3D acceleration capabilities (Nvidia)
3. 7200rpm Hard Disk drive.
4. WiFI 802.11n
5. Firewire 800
6. HDMI output
7. Bluray disk drive
8. Revolutionary new design.

Would be nice also to have if the cost can stay at relatively low levels.

1. CPU with at least 2,33GHz clock speed & 4MB cache memory.
2. Bluray recorder disk drive
3. eSATA interface
4. Solid State hard disk
5. WiMAX wireless interface
5. Smaller dimensions

5 USB ports are not that important to have, since you can use an external USB hub and upgrade the number of ports to anything you want. Mini DVI is useful to save space for other ports but not necessary. Mac mini is an entry level machine after all, but should have good enough HTPC capabilities and mobility.

I don’t think that the Mac mini on the picture is going to gain a big market share.

The new macbook pro unibody does. And yes, the whole thing sucks for me because I am a photographer. What really sucks is that colors are correct under Windows.

BS.

only miniDisplayPort, no DVI.

Think the excessive USB ports, old-school white design, and the DVI port are all giveaways that it's a fake. More than likely it'll be an aluminum design, reasonable number of USB ports (3 or 4), and no-DVI. I also expect quad-core CPUs if they don't intend to update it for some time (like the previous). If they plan on more frequent updates, then Core 2 Duo. Or, they may axe the mini altogether and just go with mini-towers. Could happen with Jobs out for the moment.

I can pretty much guarantee you that these will not appear at all. Infact, I would place money that all of the above quoted will not appear at all :p

Good point but I reckon it could be quite useful for those people sticking it in a room corner and attaching some big external storage for media to it. If there's room to put FW800 on there and it is negligable extra cost, I don't really see any reason to ommit it; the Mac Mini is hardly going to cannabilise Mac Pro sales with this addition (Mac Pro is way more powerful).

Whereas the MacBook has no FireWire because this could lead to cannibalisation of MacBook Pro sales.

Photo-Shopped

I think the photo is photoshopped.
If you look carefully the Mini-DVI AND the FIREWIRE 800 are both slanted to the left where as the Mac Mini is pretty straight.
And by the looks of it Apple has not changed the design which i think they will do.

This is just my opinion!!
Agree?

If there was some kind of big step forward I would understand, but almost 2 years for an incremental update! What was Apple doing? The specs make sense, share the low-end MacBook's components to bring down the price, but surely they could've done this a lot sooner. It's also a shame that a 3.5" Hard Drive still hasn't made it in there yet. A 2TB Hard Drive in a mini would be delicious.

I agree with you. I'm expecting more than an incremental upgrade. NVidia graphics and mini-DisplayPort are a given, but I'm looking for a new case design also. Weren't there rumors earlier where the Mini was supposed to be thinner, prompting people to think that a Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme case may be used?

I know the current dress code is alum and black, but this is not the same white mini as before, but sports silver exterior.

Does aluminium reduce the wifi signal? I thought the iPhone went from metal to plastic to improve signal reception. Perhaps the limited dimensions and lack of a glass panel like the iMacs and MacBooks dictate a plastic exterior for signal functionality?

Whether this is a fake or authentic pic, well only the creator knows definitely and those he's personally and truthfully testified to.

Definitely -- after the same design for quite some time, I'm thinking a full upgrade is in store.

Has anyone noticed that the reflection of the Ethernet port in the power cord seems a bit odd? Not really proof that it is fake, but I thought I'd get it out there.

If they don't put 6 & 8 I can guarantee you it will be a failure.

You haven't been around long have you. It will be a success just by having a CPU upgrade, people love this machine. Clearly you need to take a look at the recent notebooks and review your list and see what a 'failure' they have been. The mini is a MB wihtout the screen, don't expect to see any more features than that offers.

As previously stated, you are going to be very dissapointed.

It seems a bit weird that apple would use two different kinds of display connectors (Mini DVI and Mini DP), I thought Apple were all for consistency.

I love this machine too as I own one. For sure there will be fanatics out there to buy it anyway, even having only a CPU upgrade. But considering the latest competition in HTPCs from other brands, Mac mini to be successful in the market needs more features. And after years staying with the same design, I believe it is vital from marketing point of view to redesign it. Especially when all other Apple products have new design since first Mac mini’s introduction. Mac mini is not just a MB without the screen. It is a cheap personal computer and a mobile HTPC at the same time. Features like Firewire & HDMI are much more important for the Mini than for the MB.

Can the Mini-DVI output 2560x1600 resolution??

If it can, then the Mac Mini would be a real kick ass for its price..

1.The nVidia equivalent of Montevina.
2. The 9400M, as we have seen.
3. Maybe.
4. Definitely.
5. No.
6. Someone give me a real reason why.
7. Never happening.
8. Probably.

1. Nope.
2. Nope.
3. Nope.
4. A given.
5. Nope.
6. Uh... People want bigger, not smaller. We want the size of a Time Capsule.

The new macbook pro unibody does. And yes, the whole thing sucks for me because I am a photographer. What really sucks is that colors are correct under Windows.

No, it doesn't. It has Mini DisplayPort: Completely different.

Even though lots of people are using their Mini as a HTPC, Apple doesn't make any attempt to push this feature. Apple want you to buy a Mac and the :apple:TV for your home theatre set up.

I just don't see Apple making improvements to the Mini which will move it into :apple:TV territory.

If I was in charge of developing the new Mac Mini, the first thing I would put on the whiteboard on the first day is...

$499
And a $5k bonus to everyone if we can make it $399.

Paying what we do now for these terrible Mini specs is just absurd.

But anyway, as for the photo, I think it's a prototype at the moment; however we can only see the final verdict on keynote day. ;)
