...in my humble opinion... Anyways, i think both are fakes. I mean, did anyone come close to guessing what the G5 will look like ? i haven't seen any made before the g5 was announced or seen.

I'm still hoping for the brushed metal look of the Cinema Display. Jonathan Ives will just improve on the idea.

Macs too expensive?

I have to disagree with you Josh.

When I bought my 12" PB with superdrive, a similar spec Sony VAIO (with only a combi drive) was 400GBP more.

Also, Mac users are willing to pay for a better user experience. When I go to work and turn on my PC, there is always that niggle at the back of my mind wondering what will go wrong today. I never have that when I turn on my Mac (famous last words!).

There are differences between Macs and PCs, and Mac users are willing to pay for them. If we didn't, Macs would simply cease to exist.

The only reason Apple's products are so expensive because they know you people will buy them.

They know their stuff is more expensive than their competitors, but they also know that mac users, for whatever reason, dont care and will buy it anyway.

If there is a product, works great, looks sweet, fully customizeable and is cheap, PC users (aka the majority of consumers) will buy it.

If the same product was 3x more expensive, only it had a cute little Apple on it, Apple users would buy it over the other one...

I truly don't get it...Apple has great products, don't get me wrong - but they take advantage of their consumers at a ridiculously high amount.

I will never understand why you mac users will buy anything apple sells, regardless if its price is way above its quality...

If people simply refused to buy apple products and buy the competition, Apple would quickly realize that the only way they have a chance is if they price their items similarly.

Face it - Apple computers are great, but they are not so much greater than the comptetition that they need to be 3 times more expensive - now you can try to justify their price all you want, but its still not going to change a thing.

Apple sells at a high price simply because they can. Mac users will buy Apple stuff at any cost, so any hopes for reasonable prices from Apple to EVER happen can just be tossed out the window.

(not flaming anyone - I like Apple stuff - but you cannot deny that their prices are ridiculous)

You're looking at the picture wrong....

You guys have it all wrong! The new G5's have the display built into the side of the case. The display in the picture is just a view of the other (removable) side of the G5. I'm not sure why they cropped the handles at the top, though. Must've been operator error.

Either that, or... maybe the new displays replace the removable side panel on the G5! Finally, a use for all that empty space inside the case! Of course, now the darn things will weigh 65 pounds....

;)

If this is it, it's disappointing. It's clearly not adjustable, which is the only major drawback of the current displays.

It could still have the leg in the back to adjust, and actually, I like it. Okay, I'm a brushed-metal kind of guy. But, alas, it's a hoax. Much like my adolescent, time-wasting photoshop efforts concerning the 23", 64" and iJ-Tron Powerbooks.

compatability

does anyone have any word on whether it will work with older macs?

I have a cube with a GeForce 2MX upgrade (better than the ATI it had originally, at least) and would love to get a sleeker monitor that would look better with it. Either that, or buy a current 20" cheap, when everyone else scrambles for the new ones.

adjustability (and standard VESA mount) would be almost a necessity, (some would buy it anyway) and an input for an HDTV tuner would be awesome.

Someone should come up with that. A stand-alone adapter HDTV tuner box that has a remote control, OSD, and has an ADC plug on it, and outputs (optical, or wire) to a home theater receiver, and right there you have an Apple LCD HDTV. (with a DVI, it could use any LCD monitor)
That would be awesome with a 23" HD monitor, or the proposed 30" lcd.
Maybe someone already has done this, or maybe I should get the patent. The other LCD TVs on the market seem overpriced and small. Definitely not as stylish, either.

Catalog vs Retail???

I'm going to be getting a new Power Mac G5 when they come out later this month. However, where is the best place to buy one? The Apple Store (have to pay sales tax), Mac Connection (no sales tax), Mac Mall (no sales tax), Apple.com (sales tax), or Comp USA (sales tax)??

I figure I can just save 3-$400 on just sales tax after I get my new G5 and Apple Cinema monitor if I go through a catalog. Are there any pros or cons. I really would like to support the local Apple store. Any thoughts? Which online catalog has the best reputation?

Except that amorphous metals are so much more expensive than...no, wait, we're talking Apple here. They'll actually use the not-the-cheapest materials. I figure that you might have been joking, but this would be an excellent idea -

I wasn't joking actually. The metals themselves are more expensive, yes. Especially since AFAIK Liquidmetal is the only company selling them right now (I'm likely wrong about this by now). The idea was that they would be cost-effective because the fabrication techniques were potentially ultra-simple, similar to making things out of plastics. This hasn't happened yet, which is why I mentioned the fab issue in my post. Oh well.

Pin-striped plastics are SO ten minutes ago.

Actually, with all the stories about how easy the aluminum PBs are to dent, maybe you could "adjust" these with a mallet.

then they would break to easy, DUCT TAPE is the answer!!!

Why everytime someone shows a picture of the "next Apple display" it always looks the same. I could probably find a million pictures from 6 months ago that look that look just like this one. I personally think that this is not the next apple display. As in the original iMac as well as the new iMac, we had no idea what they would be like and were all shocked when they came out. Expect to see the same for the next display by Apple.

Maybe for the 23-inchers, but what about the 17- and 20-inchers? Have you seen the 20-inch iMac? The screen adjustability is awesome. And like another poster said, a 23-incher (and the rumored 30-incher) would be something a lot of people might want to use as a TV. You might want to keep it in one position for working, then redirect it so you can watch from your couch.
A note on the aspect ratio. Standard HDTV is 16:9, as we all know. Current apple displays are something on the order of 12:7, or something like that. Therefore, the picture would either not be full, or cut off.

Terrible Photoshop

Wow, that is the most unimaginative photoshop I have ever seen. Artist: "Hmm, I'll take the G5 ad, cut a cinema display picture out and slap the two on top of on another. Hey maybe if I post it somewhere under an anonymous name and with a cryptic description people will believe me."

I suppose there are dreamers out there, but I hope there are better, more imaginative dreamers employed at Apple.

I think that the display in the picture looks very nice, and compliments the G5 very nicely. I just hope it would be easily adjustable, etc. Will be interesting to see if this is a fake picture or not.

I made a bet that new monitors and power mac updates would be simultaneous; looks like I might win. Too bad it isn't going to be enough to get me a new power mac..

Look closely at the picture, the artist didn't even take the time to make sure that the aluminum immediately surrounding the display was the same as the supports. Looks like a color dropper job.

yes a computer made entirely out of duct tape pure genious it could be water cooled to b/c u wouldnt have to worry about leaks b/c the pipes would already be covered with duct tape to keep with the style!
and the case is easily change able / repairable want a knew look just run down to the hardware store! or it could be cardboard like the one yoshi made on TSS :D

New 30" Displays Used In Genius Bar?

I was in the Cherry Creek Apple Store (Denver, CO) over the weekend (as well as the Aspen Grove Apple Store), and in both locations noticed they redesigned the back wall of the Genius Bar.
Gone now, are the images of genius' past - replaced with two, 30" ultra crisp widescreen displays. These displays were running canned "OS X Tips" information. Lots of text, and standard blue OS X desktop look. The text and graphics flying around on the display were incredibly sharp and crisp... making me wonder if the rumored 30" Cinema Display may have some meat to it. Maybe Apple were putting them in all Genius Bars...

Far fetched, perhaps. Wondered if anyone else had noticed and thought the same thing.

Cursed rumor sites. ;)

Nah those aren't the fabled 30" moniters, those were said in a news article not to long ago that apple was changing the genius bar and putting in 2 30" moniters with slideshows and what not if i recall correctly. Just apple spending more money in store preperation and looks than them spending on production of new machines that we desperately need.

i just saw the new genious bar displays in person for the 1st time the other night, and wow are they amazing! they're gigantic!
i'd love to have one of them. so who has the key to the apple store?
we strike at dawn.

Come on, man, you're just bitching now. You and I both know that Apple's store improvements have zero impact on the time it takes them to produce new hardware. It's not like there's one guy who can either install displays or work out the thermal issues on G5 laptops....

On the other hand, it's perfectly legitimate to bitch about the delays. Just don't blame the pretty monitors!

:)

I have dealt with Mac Connection the most. If I purchase from them I have to pay Massachusetts sales tax though. If you have an Apple Store or a good retailer nearby you can still go in to get some personal one on one assistance. A feature that is very valuable to me. I have a good relationship with the staff at my local store, they recognize me as a frequent visitor. Mac Connection does have free online tech support for lifetime. They usually have deals on monitors, memory, printers, & software.

Yeah your right, i just needed to bitch about things. I have had a really tough week with school and what not and i guess this was the only place i wouldn't get into any academic problems for bitching. Just been really stressed out lately and the wait for the computer isn't helping.

No problem. I wasn't actually upset, of course! I hope that Apple makes us all happy soon. My guess is supplier problems. I don't think they're intentionally waiting this long for upgrades.
