This would be nice. Not so much for adjustability for me. I have 2 23" at work and they don't need much adjusting. I just really have to wonder if this will be true. How long has this "rendition" been around anyway?

It bears a slight resemblance to the last 3d model I did, in the front - the feet I made didn't come out, however, before they bent backwards, and they were wider than the one that image shows.

I don't care if the "updated" displays are exactly the same, I just want them to be cheaper, and come out before may so I can still use my edu discount.

... you know you're a mac addict when you consider going to graduate school so you can still get an edu discount ...

Things that match are passé

Even in the interior design world, articles/items that match are very passé. The ever-growing trend in the fashion world, and the design world is to have a juxtaposition of different items. Leading designers for example will have a shirt with horizontal stripes, and a tie with dots; this was taboo a couple of years ago, but look at programs such as "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," AND pay attention to what they have to say.

Matching is boring. Different is interesting.

heh - that's good! :D anyways so what are people's predictions regarding the "next" look (after aluminum)?

I'm still betting that aluminum was just a stopgap until fabrication techniques for amorphous metals become more feasible. The most famous of which being Liquidmetal, although other companies have been developing them as well.

With 1 micron precision directly out of the mold, you'd think that might help with quality control. :)

In the original powermac g5 release video there were a few scenes where the plastic 23" looked like an aluminum display might look.. I had to watch the video a few times. This "artist's rendition" looks like those scenes.. I'm sure this guy saw the same thing I did, and thought the same thing I did...

If Apple release's something that looks like that, I'll probably be buying a Sony. :(

As for the "adjustability" debate... I've said it a hundered times, the current design sucks. I want to be able to sit with my 17" powerbook in front of me, with the 30" on the desk shelf above and behind it.. I CANNOT use the current design to do this. In my mind its one of the poorest designed lcds on the market.

While other 'puter manufacturers didn't all go pinstripes (yet), they will obviously copy the entire aluminum look, so Apple will come up with something new to keep ahead of the game (eventually). someone mentioned the aluminum dents easily, so the disply could be adjusted with a hammer --- perhaps hammered steel will be the next "look"? or maybe everything will be transparent to a degree...? any thoughts from forward-thinking designers out there?

Maybe for the 23-inchers, but what about the 17- and 20-inchers? Have you seen the 20-inch iMac? The screen adjustability is awesome. And like another poster said, a 23-incher (and the rumored 30-incher) would be something a lot of people might want to use as a TV. You might want to keep it in one position for working, then redirect it so you can watch from your couch.

I read the title and pictured aluminum leaking out of a display!!!!!!

Same here. Knowing that its LCDs (liquid crystal displays), it seemed plausible too .... :p

My bet is on colored aluminum, like the iPod mini. The consumer line will have cool colors, and the pro line will be the current silver, or maybe a darker aluminum. Who knows. I think Apple will be dropping the white plastic of the iPod, iMac, iBook soon.

Except that amorphous metals are so much more expensive than...no, wait, we're talking Apple here. They'll actually use the not-the-cheapest materials. I figure that you might have been joking, but this would be an excellent idea - and I'd not have to worry about the casing being scratched by virtually anything that touched it, as is the case (no pun intended) with my current G5.

I would hope, though, that they can find something lighter than aluminum, or else stop saying the case is aluminum when it must really be aluminum-coated cast iron ;) (have you picked up a G5 lately?).

Slide-in panels (like on high-end appliances like dishwashers) - lets you pick the look you want (blue plastic, wood, steel, leather). Also lets you change it to match your decor or mood. Hmmm. Mood... mood plastic? "Hey, your Mac looks happy!" "No, the fan is just on the fritz. It's overheating."

As far as pricing is concerned, I hope Apple does reduce the cost for the lower models - even the 23". But to be honest, the 23" is priced better than most similar sized models out there. A 30" inch.....would that go for $2499 or $2999??

HP just release a business class 23" monitor (the L2335) based on the next generation LCD panel thats in the current Apple 23" display. It has component and s-vid inputs along with the standard vga and dvi. Its silverish in color but I believe its still a plastic bezel. :( The market price point appears to be moving down for this class as the HP monitor was intoduced at $1699 US. I can only hope Apple is going to match or come close to matching the price/features in their next release.

Wood?

Back to the roots ...

A swedish company produces PCs with cases from wood. They're showing them at this year's CeBit (which starts this week, I think).

Personally, I don't like it.

something new

how about a pb dock built into the next display. i'm waiting for a pb dock that is similar to the ipod dock. think about how great it would be. you come home, dock your pb; and the cinema display comes to life. your wireless keyboard and mouse replace the laptop controls. you're on your way. maybe the pb even syncs to a back up harddrive. good idea? i vote "yes."

The only reason Apple's products are so expensive because they know you people will buy them.

They know their stuff is more expensive than their competitors, but they also know that mac users, for whatever reason, dont care and will buy it anyway.

If there is a product, works great, looks sweet, fully customizeable and is cheap, PC users (aka the majority of consumers) will buy it.

If the same product was 3x more expensive, only it had a cute little Apple on it, Apple users would buy it over the other one...

I truly don't get it...Apple has great products, don't get me wrong - but they take advantage of their consumers at a ridiculously high amount.

I will never understand why you mac users will buy anything apple sells, regardless if its price is way above its quality...

If people simply refused to buy apple products and buy the competition, Apple would quickly realize that the only way they have a chance is if they price their items similarly.

Face it - Apple computers are great, but they are not so much greater than the comptetition that they need to be 3 times more expensive - now you can try to justify their price all you want, but its still not going to change a thing.

Apple sells at a high price simply because they can. Mac users will buy Apple stuff at any cost, so any hopes for reasonable prices from Apple to EVER happen can just be tossed out the window.

(not flaming anyone - I like Apple stuff - but you cannot deny that their prices are ridiculous)

Wallpaper

Does anybody have that wallpaper that is used in the rendering of the display? It looks sweet.

You really think there stuff is that expensive? Most of their products are relatively cheap for the amazing technology you are getting.

Some things, like the cinema displays are expensive, but thats what that stuff costs. There are not any better displays that are cheaper.

And I really get angry when people say the iPod is overpriced, because the only player that is better costs more...

Sure, some things are expensive, but they are usually well worth it.

Do you want to live in a methlab because you can get it cheaper then a nice house in a nice neighborhood? Both provide you with shelter, one is just better (Think Apple).

What's up with those bezels?

Why are the bezels on Apple's monitors 1 inch wide? I would much rather have a monitor with a 0.5 inch bezel. I've never used multiple monitors before, but I still think the bezel looks a little odd being as big as it is. I'm not a PowerMac user (I expect to become one in 2007), so I don't need one of those Apple displays right now. I will get a display with the PowerMac I get in 2007 - I hope Apple's displays are updated at least one more time before then (not including this rumored update).

I have a meeting at apple next week, I will keep my eyes open and post if I see anything. I hope that the new display is adjustable to some extent but the viewable angle of the current displays is awesome so we will see.

smells like bs to be... not to mention badly blotched photoshop job. here is a better artist rendition

...in my humble opinion... Anyways, i think both are fakes. I mean, did anyone come close to guessing what the G5 will look like ? i haven't seen any made before the g5 was announced or seen.

that is certainly a fake! look at the feet and how they go off at odd angles and they're not even close to being the same size. that said, i really am hoping for revised displays with revised g5s soon.
