My bet is on "Macbook"

I don't really like either of the current names, and I don't think either is correct. I think the tablet is going to be the new Macbook, and I've been saying so for a while now ;)

Regarding rebranding of the macbook line, here's what I think.

Macbook pro: 13, 15, 17inch models all Alu with GPUs (so what is currently Macbook will get incorporated into this line up)

Macbook air: as currently.

Macbook: IS the tablet - and will do everything rumored, and what's more will be beautiful for reading... wait for it... books.

I believe they will be aiming the tablet at students as much as anyone else, and the current Macbook is a single model which isn't all that differentiated from the Macbook Pro. Whatever this tablet is (especially if it's a 10incher), it will cannibalise from the MacBook if it stays as it is currently.

I think these latest names are red herrings - it's going to be the new Macbook :)

well...

has it occurred to anyone that the name itunes might just be a little outdated given how apple's media business model has shifted from music to amongst a lot of other media related content (apps, games, movies, tv shows and possibly even magazines, newspapers, etc).

i've been wondering for a while now when the heck they were going to change this outdated name for itunes because it quite frankly makes no sense why they would continue with the rather limiting term "iTUNES" - iGuide has a rather amusing ring to it - but it makes sense - it does guide me through my music, application and movie db! :D

Rumours of tactile feedback, and the suggested name iGuide makes me think this tablet device will be a mobility aid for the disabled; or at least a version of it. A great invention in my opinion.

The suggested names have been disappointing so far, including iS late... err sorry I mean iSlate. The name will depend if it runs OS X (Mac), or OS X iPhone variety.

so anything from iPod grande, to Mac mobile is possible.

I think maybe it will be totally left field, like kindle was.

iGuide could be a good name for the digital bookstore, your guide for books and interactive media. Interactive books will also blur the line between books, music and video.
The digital book store would more likely be a section on iTMS. No?

is it just me or is "Crap" starting to sound like a good name?
Has anyone checked to see if Apple's registered iCrap? ;)

iSlate over iGuide

iSlate is just so original, and it's creative! iGuide sounds like a name apple would use when they create their first in-car GPS system (Not iPhone or any other products with GPS, but the navman style GPS). Maybe iGuide IS another product??? Seeming though Apple have already got their hands on the domain "islate.com" so that's basicly a definate ... Only logical thinking...

Here is my wild guess ... iGuide is for TV listings ... as SJ is going to do to the TV industry what he did to music over the next few years it will be where you go to select your on demand TV show (and perhaps movies too) at Apple. iTunes sounds too musically oriented as Apple use it for the ever widening variety of media types they offer. The link to the iSlate is in this scenario that iGuide runs on an iSlate. Hey it's fun speculating :)

yeah, ive been wondering how they would rebrand itunes, expanding its role has been logicle thus far but its to the point that itunes no longer serves to describe what it is. The dock icon is also getting old too, it might as well be a cassette player with bells and whistles on it.

I think the iGuide could refer to just a software for the iSlate, maybe this is the surprise that some people said Steve Jobs had up his sleeves for the tablet?

The Name of the iThingy is up in the air

There has been a lot of speculation about the name of Apple's tablet, but I don't think any are likely.

Apple is very unlikely to give the new product the same name as a discontinued product (iBook) or a name that is similar to an existing product (TouchPod vs. iPod Touch, iPad vs. iPod, and so forth). The phonology of many languages would cause iPod and iPad to be homonyms. In other words, it would result in Apple having two different products with the same name in many markets.

It is not likely to have "Mac" as a component of its name unless it can be used as a general-purpose computer.

I don't think "Pad" is a likely component of the name, since it implies a stack of papers or a thin pillow, neither of which applies.

I don't think "tablet" is likely, because it is the name of a failure, because it sounds like something to write on (which won't be the full scope of its use), and because it sounds like something you take with a glass of water. It would also result in a lot of cartoons showing Steve Jobs descending the mountain with two tablets, and jokes about taking two tablets and calling in the morning. I don't think Apple wants to introduce a product that is immediately the butt of jokes.

"Slate" is more likely, but it is similar to an online magazine that might view it as infringement. It sounds like something the Flintstones would use or an old blackboard. Plus slates are heavy.

A lot of these filings are probably protection, to keep people from using similar names that would be confusing. So the fact that Apple is registering "iSlate" doesn't necessarily mean anything.

The name of the iThingy is still up in the air. It will probably be a surprise but obvious in retrospect.

On second thought

Well, after reading a couple more comments I have also come up with another conclusion... Google has recently released a beta tester for their new ChromeOS, ChromeOS has google chrome as the web browser, what if iSlate is a completely different OS to OSX or Snow Leopard and it has iGuide as it's browser, with extra features, of course. Any other ideas???

didnt awhile back a new york times person slipped in a conference and said "the impending slate?" before all this slate stuff was found? pretty obvious it will be called islate

Folks, "slate" is just a term for a "tablet" computer with no keyboard.

See a little slate history here.

There are many slates available for enterprise applications. A lot are powered by Windows CE to give battery longevity. Others use a regular OS like XP or Linux.

Seems to me iguide is to text what iTunes is to multimedia.

Or, more likely, this is another speculative/defensive registration.

Since it's been pending for two years, chances are the USPTO has been rejecting the registration anyway. We will probably never see Apple using it.

whatever happened to "iProd??"

Whatever happened to "iProd" as a possible name? Wasn't that seen as a driver name in a recent software release?

Apple need to get their creativity thinking caps back on with the name. I don't think they will call it neither! Apple have many patents that they won, which they have not used.

If they do call it islate or iguide I can see them changing it as they changed the name of Apple TV from iTV.

don't like "iSlate"

everytime I say "iSlate," it sounds like "isolate." Which has antisocial connotations.

Retreads?

There are many slates available for enterprise applications. A lot are powered by Windows CE to give battery longevity. Others use a regular OS like XP or Linux.

Which sounds to me like a good reason for Apple to avoid calling it a slate. It's a "me-too" name. Why would Apple want to put themselves in the same class as Windows CE?

Apple will market this as an entirely new kind of device, and that means it's not going to have a name that is a retread.

This could be it. It would take a lot to switch over the iTunes moniker though. Much harder than the .Mac-MobileMe transition;)

Reputation on killing windows

Considering how well apple was and still is, breaking Microsofts windows (I had a laugh too!), I think that they have the ability to call it "iSlay" or "iSlayer" just to annoy the hell out of Microsoft -Tsk tsk tsk-

Maybe they'll announce iGuide in January to replace iTunes. It'll be 64-bit, which is why they didn't bother making iTunes 64-bit.

Just a hunch.
