iSlate makes sense

In the old old OLD days, kids would take a slate and chalk to school because pen and paper was not readily available. The slate was approximately 12"square, (similar dimensions to possible tablet?). I think I remember seeing some in the TV series Lttle House On The Prarie and often in old western movies.

So, iSlate is kind of duplicating this idea, but with a lot more technology of course, but similar size and certainly will be an educational device as well as an entertainment device as well.

iGuide would make sense as the software driving the iSlate to Guide users to whatever information, location or results the user requests.

I believe they will be aiming the tablet at students as much as anyone else, and the current Macbook is a single model which isn't all that differentiated from the Macbook Pro. Whatever this tablet is (especially if it's a 10incher), it will cannibalise from the MacBook if it stays as it is currently.

I think these latest names are red herrings - it's going to be the new Macbook :)

Not going to happen. All rumors are pointing to an e-book reader. My guess is that it'll be an e-book reader + media + apps. Look at the Kindle sales and ebook sales over Christmas. Apple wants in on that growing pie. They already have the app store and adding books will be easy. Apple loves the 30% ecosystem they have set up and will want to keep that growing. If the new device is closer to a full computer than a big iPhone, making people go through Apple for all their apps just won't fly and that is something Apple definitely wants to expand on.

I'll repeat it again, the new device will NOT replace the MB except in very specific cases (ie, where a netbook would have sufficed).

lame again, why assume that it *must* start with an "i"?

Anyhow, the real rumours were that this device would be aimed at publishing as the "killer feature", in direct competition with Kindle. Therefore the perfect "i" name would be "iBook" ... and guess who already owns that trademark for over a decade?

But would apple really want to use an old name for a new product? Besides, there are still people with iBooks so a new product with that same name would not really make sense.

"i"

If Apple does introduce a new product or a new service, I hope they go away from the "i" + camel case nomenclature. It's getting to feel childish.

I agree, but don't know if Apple will. The "i" thing now seems to mean iSomething = Apple. The issue IMHO is that you can put an "i" in front of anything:

iSeat - the new chair from Apple
iToilet - the place to read your iSlate
iTrain - Apple's new CSR initiative!!!
iGo - a new app within iGuide to show how you went somewhere
iWent - post the photos from your iCam on iWent and show your iFriends

Ok, I'll have to stop now, but yeah - iCould go on all day! Either way iCannot wait as iNeed to replace my PB G4 which is missing a few keys and the iWhatever is looking good! Roll on 260110!

iSlate for an Appe product ?

How can someone really believe that Apple hardware is going to be called an iSlate ? How about iSledge? iGuide is to narrow, while iBook is perfect to both hardware and use of the thing, if it ever materialize. It will probably just be new colors for the standard iPhone.

How about the "Apple Slate" utilizing the underlying software called iGuide? ;)

The iGuide software will give users access to hundreds of thousands of ebooks, text books, newpapers and magazines. All in the Apple Slate's new iGuide on line store just built in Apples new cloud complex on the east coast! :D

iGuide will function with Apples cover flow and connect the user to the cloud via wi-fi for all your browsing and purchases.

Of course for multimedia, users will have wireless access to iTunes.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the "Apple Slate"!;)

I'm betting neither name is the name for the device. Your "iSlate" or "iGuide" is going to be an application within the device or a new Apple Service...perhaps their "cloud" streaming service? "What's on your slate for today?"

iCloud would rip the carpet out from under any other cloud services. Is anyone using 'cloud' in a name? And it's no worse than slate/pad/tablet.

Speaking of clouds……
iGuide... Comes with fluffy white iTowel to aid you in your travels.

C'mon people twenty-five comments and no jokes of this type yet?

And no jokes about Reality Distortion Fields and Somebody Else's Problem Fields, either.

I was kinda hoping for "iPad." ;)

And, lest we laugh too much at iPad, remember that Barnes & Noble referred to Apple's forthcoming product by exactly that name in their customer survey. When I posted the picture and coverflow comment above, I was resisting the obvious iFlow suggestion. Imagine bringing out a product that got nicknamed 'the period'. Ouch.

I'm still hoping for iBook.

iGuide makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE for the tablet. It doesn't even make much sense for a service related to the tablet.

The more I say iSlate the more I like it! :)

could be worse

yesterday, i-slate sounded horrible, but apple leaked the name i-guide; today, i-slate is sounding better.:apple:

"iPod Slate", as the poster above said, seems like the no brainer. It's basically a large-scale iPod.

iGuide as a replacement for iTunes? What a boring and unoriginal name. Not going to happen. iTunes is a brand unto itself.

Not sure if we'll see a separate store for ebooks. Wouldn't it make sense to keep everything in the same store?

iMight

Slate is probably

It could end up being called MacBook Slate for the 'high end' and/or 'iPod Slate' or 'Guide' for the media end...

The registration and listings of iSlate and iGuide could simply be base-coverings in case the product naming sticks that were done in early dayz as a stop-gap/ideas measure.
No doubt there are more listings out there in secret... ;)

iGuide - perhaps the biggest hint of all....

It is just my own supposition, but for what its worth....

The name 'iGuide' immediately made me think of satellite navigation or car navigation systems used in cars. I am wondering if one of the key concepts of the new 'tablet' is a satnav function. If this is true, then I wonder if 'iGuide' is referring to this new application rather than the name of the device. Let me explain further.

One of the commonly voiced opinions on car related forums is that internet is still not available in cars. Audi made news this autumn announcing that they will be offering google maps in one of their models. Until now, this is about it.

Apple turned the mobile phone market on its head with the introduction of the iPhone. Virtually, it rendered the phone aspect on its device as 'just one more' application. Basically, an iPod Touch with telephoning capabilities. In the same way, I am wondering if the next market they are planning on reinventing common sense be the satellite navigation market. I.e., the larger screen of a tablet making it possible to use in vehicles and offering the consumer the potential to combine devices and rely on a multi-purpose tablet to 'iGuide' them around. At the same time, the tablet would play music from its iPod application to the already mostly iPod friendly car stereo systems. When stationery, the tablet becomes an internet browsing tool for local restaurants etc., e-mail functioning system and so forth.

The iPhone and iPod touch already covers the 'in-pocket' functionality of the average pedestrian and it is highly unlikely that a leisure focused pedestrian is going to carry one these around when they can put an iPod/Phone into their pockets. This market is void and is open to exploitation. I am wondering if this is the niche that the tablet will fulfill that iPod/phone struggles with from being too small and laptops such as the MacBook suffer from being too large due to the keyboard getting in the way.

All of this in addition to being a potential textbook reader, magazine reader and general portable media device...

Just a thought, but can't really see the success of this device without a new aspect involved and I suspect that satnav/GPS is one potential area that this could be aiming at.

I don't really like either of the current names, and I don't think either is correct. I think the tablet is going to be the new Macbook, and I've been saying so for a while now ;)

I believe they will be aiming the tablet at students as much as anyone else, and the current Macbook is a single model which isn't all that differentiated from the Macbook Pro. Sorry, but many people buy the MacBook as it is now, will need a good keyboard to type long papers, and need full OSX for full sized applications. They also JUST redesigned the MacBook. Why would they spend so much on R&D to redesign it and start manufacturing it differently than they did for the past 3 years just to get rid of it 3 months later? Plus, the MacBook name is already stuck in consumers' minds as a laptop. Trust me, it won't be called MacBook. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money against that, seriously.
iSlate - Is late?
MY GOD!! How many times are people going to use this corny joke?? It's not funny, and you aren't original. The first time someone did it it was cute but it now it's just getting really annoying.

Man this joke is gonna get made in every thread.

If you think of iTunes for the iPod, what about iGuide for the iSlate? Makes sense to me.

Because it will be itunes for islate. It makes no sense whatsoever to develop a whole new system when everything else, ipod, iphone etc etc uses itunes for content delivery and organisation.

There will obviously be two tablets, one for media, and one for news and books. Makes sense since we already know Apple are making two different models.

I am wondering if the next market they are planning on reinventing common sense be the satellite navigation market.

i think your onto something here, this added feature really puts it over the top, differentiating it from the iphone and keeping it still more portable than a laptop. microsoft and sony have been pouring allot of effort into getting into the home entertainment/media pc market. imagine if apple went after cars and became the OS of choice for luxury vehicles to integrate with. this could be huge
