Yep, I already brought that up.

Makes me think it'll have a name more like "iPod touch Pro".

I think "iProd" is too comical, honestly... and that they wouldn't use it. But it IS evocative and conceptually correct. Problem is that it's too close to "iPod" in sound...

Wonder if they thought about using "mac" in the name. Like "MacPad," and get away from the lower-cased "i" which, to me, is cliché at this point.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I agree with bonte. iGuide will be the iTunes for written materials. Slate would be much cooler than iSlate. The whole "I" thing is starting to feel a bit dated.

iCommandment. Yes? No?

They're creating a temporal vortex.

Time travel!

But if they've changed history, why are we still here?

The nerds in the temporal vortex must have complained enough about the name of the product to protect us from the changes in the time line.

I predict the name “iPod Slate.” With iSlate being reserved just because people will call it that informally (like people say iTouch).

iBrary

i'Ve been wondering about the whole iTunes situation for a while myself. I imagine iGuide would more likely be related to a software or system than a hardware device. That's just me. I can see them shifting from iTunes to iGuide or letting iTunes be a sub category of iGuide along with iPlay, iRead, i...Work?... iDunno.

As for the slate, bring it. I just hope it'll be something useful to me - something to fill the gap between the MP & iPhone that isn't a bulky MacBook.

Whoa.

Why Does The Name Matter!!!

Does the name of this thing really matter that much? They could call this thing the iDogSh** and most of us would eat it up as long as there was an :apple: logo on the damn thing. :p

iGuide/i-Guide is already a product. It's the current iteration of TV Guide Interactive/Prevue Interactive, which is now owned by Rovi. i-Guide is used on many Motorola cable boxes. Many major cable systems like Comcast employ it. i-Guide replaced the previous iteration of the guide, which came in two flavors (blue guide for DVRs and tan guide for other boxes) in 2004.

The product has a long history. It started out as TV Guide On Screen as a partnership between TCl Cable and TV Guide Magazine, and then was acquired by Prevue Networks/United Video Satellite Group and it was renamed Prevue Interactive. When TV Guide Magazine and Prevue/UVSG merged in 1999, the product was renamed TV Guide Interactive. TV Guide Inc. then merged with Gemstar to form Gemstar-TV Guide, which was then acquired by Macrovision, now Rovi, who sold the TV Guide Network channel to Lionsgate and the magazine to someone else.

Many people refer to it as iGuide even though the name is officially i-Guide.

It matters

It doesn't matter to any of us in this forum but the name does matter. Mainly to people sitting on the fence and to people who need something trendy and easy to remember. The clear choice should be the resurrection of the iBook logo and it should be called the iBook G5. Why? This tablet is going to be a game-changer and a Kindle-killer and with that name it would be a constant reminder that it's the go-to device for all things written media. Also, content providers are sick and tired of the Sh*tty terms that Amazon has forced on them and as of late Apple has been making better deals and starting to seem like a savior. They have realized that they have been given a major business opportunity handed to them by Amazon on a silver platter. Better terms for the content providers to shove their way into the business space and (oh yes!) that COLOR thing. Have you read a magazine or newspaper on the Kindle? My wife has one and it's really bad. Would I be likely to give up a magazine subscription and get it on the iBook? Probably, and I won't be alone. iSlate? Come on, that sounds stupid! Bring back the IBook Steve.

I am pretty tired of the iNames, but most people associate those with Apple, so it seems to be working for them.

I like Newton myself, but Magic Slate also works.

didnt awhile back a new york times person slipped in a conference and said "the impending slate?" before all this slate stuff was found? pretty obvious it will be called islate

That's right! They are pretty chummy with the NYT,they are in all the iPhone screen shots.Makes sense Apple would share the name with them while helping them format their content for it.
I think it will be an iSlate running an iGuide. If you don't like the name just try and remember when you first heard the other iNames. And for perspective and a few belly laughs check out this thread stared at the very moment Steve was introducing the iPod.

iBook would be great

THough personally if there is a Guide in the name, Apple should go with HGG and get all the geeks out there to buy it as the *real* Hitchhikers Guide (to the) Galaxy...

If not, iBook would fit all the requirements... and it may not be a coincidence that they retired it as a name for laptops.

Kindle Crusher

they should call it the "kindle crusher" with a name like that it sells itself, it could be anything, like a piece of slate with an :apple: sticker on it.
rock-slate.jpg
I bet it would crush kindles real good

inames

I know I went on and on about iBook G5 but the name's going to be important since this has the potential to be as big as the ipod. Oh, and most of my retirement is in the stock too. It's going to be everything the Kindle isn't.

Apple, like other companies registers hundreds of names. It's not a big deal.

I don't really like either of the current names, and I don't think either is correct. I think the tablet is going to be the new Macbook, and I've been saying so for a while now ;)

I believe they will be aiming the tablet at students as much as anyone else, and the current Macbook is a single model which isn't all that differentiated from the Macbook Pro. Whatever this tablet is (especially if it's a 10incher), it will cannibalise from the MacBook if it stays as it is currently.

I think these latest names are red herrings - it's going to be the new Macbook :)
Not if it's going to run iPhone OS as many signs are pointing to.

4th Tuesday in January

The timing of this announcement may be even more evidence that this will be a very significant, history changing product AGAIN, (among the original Apple Computer, the Macintosh, the iPod and the iPhone)....

The expected date of the announcement: January 26, 2010 is the fourth Tuesday in the fourth week of January.

The original Macintosh went on sale on January 24, 1984: the fourth Tuesday in the fourth week of January.

Maybe they should call it the iKiller, just to preempt Google when they bring out their tablet. That way the pundits would all sound really stupid calling the Google device an "iKiller killer".

But I've gone away from my previous choice, seeing as someone brought up iThing. I think that might not work as well as iThingy, which has a much more playful sound to it.

iSlate - Is late?

my thoughts exactly .. given that we've been hearing about this for how many years now? isLate seems quite appropriate

i personally like iPad a little more, provided apple isn't planning on promoting a line of feminine hygiene products

This might sound silly but how abt iAm. Who knows????? :D

egad .. the God of the Hebrew Bible? Introduce it via Schiller with Steve Jobs' voice booming from a burning bush? .. actually doesn't sound that far off
