Today has been a crazy day. New release Tuesday, now updates, and then Starbucks closing tonight! Hmmm... maybe the SDK tonight after Starbucks finishes their little closure and sipping their own products? Wishful thinkg...

Apple supports plenty of closed, proprietary standards -- their own. As well as some that while technically "standardized" aren't really popular outside of the iTunes ecosystem.

Yeah like h.246, Apple's evil take-over-the-world video format. Or AAC, which stands for "Atrocious Apple Compression". And HTML/CSS ... and PDF. All evil Apple formats. Oh wait! Let's not forget PNG! Or SVG! Those bastards!

Oh, and if you can't tell, I'm totally making fun of you. You're loony. The only case you can make for Apple pushing their own format is with iTunes DRM, which is dying at Apple's own hand.

Meanwhile, extremely widespread formats like FLV and WMV won't work without third-party software on Macs and not at all on iPods or iPhones, or iTunes (even on Windows) without some hacks. Unfortunately, the "real internet" is not just what Apple, or its defenders, define it to be.

Flash came with my iMac, it's a plug-in just like on Windows. WMV is a hack because Microsoft stopped supporting it on the Mac, and handed it off to Flip4Mac.

Flash isn't on the iPhone because of a couple reasons: first, it's not a standard. No, No, NO. NO. Shutup. It's not a standard. It's just not, it's just popular. HTML and CSS are standards. Flash works against the iPhone's user interface paradigm. Dragging? On-mouse-over events? The only purpose for Flash on the iPhone would be for Flash video. The most popular Flash video site (YouTube) is already on the iPhone, so why bother? A small minority of nerds are demanding it, but normal users don't care.

802.1x Support?

After 14 pages I've seen nothing about any 802.1x support but I just thought I would ask - has Apple added it yet?

Actually, in terms of vector graphics and animation, I would say that Flash is definitely a standard.

Basics

and with the multiple email addresses feature for each contact, it takes just a matter of seconds. It's not inconvenient to ask my contacts: "what carrier do you use?" I've been sending photos like this for months. :p

Do you happen to know what the basic elements are for those carriers?

Isn't it like ##########@wireless.att.net?

Anyone else getting an unknown error message (1602) during the installation of this?

Or does anyone know what this is/how to solve it???

Thanks

I got this like three times.

Finally I turned off my phone, unplugged it from my computer, rebooted my computer, then ran iTunes.

Once iTunes was loaded, I hooked up my iPhone via USB and then tried the upgrade again. This time it worked.

I'm gonna bet that Apple has software update 2.1 coming to the Apple TV.
How does this relate to 1.1.4? Well, you'll be able to see any content on your Apple TV or DVR on your Touch thanks to this update.

They will sell a $19 IR cable that connects to the Apple TV's USB port.

And, then I woke up.

I just drooled on my monitor. I hate you! :) I'm seriously debating on buying an :apple:tv, this would be the straw on the camels back for me to buy!

Listen, it's cumbersome, unreliable and ridiculous. End of story. Just yesterday I attempted to send 3 different pictures, twice each, to a friends carrier email. None of them showed up. It's not a new way of doing things, it's a crappy hack work around that doesn't work half the time. And it still doesn't resolve the problem of not being able to view them on my phone. THE PAGE REQUIRES FLASH.

Also different carriers/phones have sizing restrictions and some even have format variations if they are older and don't support all the standards. I know that iPhone pictures are way to big to send to my brothers phone, it comes back as an error.

Starbucks can say what they want about the 3 hour training as did the USA Goverment saying shoting down that Sataliete was important due to "toxic substances", anyway, basically, all starbucks on the Apple system are from one system such as a Starbucks itunes or whatever, they need to update this eventually due to the fact if SDK is widely open to download etc people in starbucks will want to aswell, thats my opinion so ye :D

I realize Apple doesn't own or control flash. The mac version of Safari supports plug-ins. I just hope that with the SDK, developers have the ability to create and add in plug ins. Then it will be up to adobe to create the plug in.

Remains to be seen what the SDK will give developers access to. I wouldn't mind seeing Flash on the iPhone, but I don't miss it at present.

I tried to allude to the fact that Apple does have some standards they control in my last post about Flash and WM, but perhaps put too fine a point on it. Apple would rather push H.264 and HTML5 instead of Flash, and Quicktime/H.264 instead of Windows media, not to mention IMAP/CalDAV instead of MAPI.

As for the email vs mms thing...I've never used mms and I think it's the stupidest thing ever...but I do acknowledge that it's widely used across cell phones..so why doesn't the iphone support it? If for no other reason than to bring it up to par with any other phone out there. Sure, the iphone can do tons of stuff the average cell phone can only dream of...but it's the obvious stuff that will get noticed if it's not there.

MMS seems like another "left on the cutting room floor" feature and its omission was probably dictated by its US-centric initial target market. MMS is really not that commonly used in the US, at least in my experience, whereas it is much more widespread in other countries.

And yes, SMS was included because it's much more commonly used in the US and ATT didn't want to forego the hefty revenues it gets from that service. On the other hand, the iPhone has no iChat, but that strikes me as being a compromise with ATT to protect their SMS revenue stream, though it also could have been a "cutting room floor" decision.

I love my iphone and wouldn't trade it for anything (cept maybe a larger capacity iphone), but it's not perfect, but it's close. What's wrong with wishing it were closer to perfect?

It will be very interesting to see how much closer to perfection the iPhone gets with the advent of legitimate third party apps. Hopefully Apple and/or ATT won't work to keep applications that could impact their current revenue streams off the iPhone, such as Skype or IM apps. Heck, maybe a third party developer will be the one to implement MMS!

The camera is absolutely better. No blurriness whatsoever. Looks like video recording is coming soon.

Oh please, let us get into a discussion over the use of "standards" in browsers. And their infinitely diverse interpretations of such.

Wrong...
There are a ton of websites where the entire site is nothing but Flash.
I'm not a nerd, just a guitar player and a "normal user".
Example: The Jackson guitar website is done entirely in Flash... I cannot view any of it on my iPhone. Same applies to the Charvel guitar site.
Some of the online parts stores I go to have their entire catlog done in Flash... again, can't see it on my iPhone.
So while it may not be an "industry standard", there are a ***** load of sites using it.
So step away from the keyboard and put down the Kool-Aid.

I'm on a safari in Africa - and it was a little boring. I updated to 1.1.4 and suddenly the safari seems snappier! :D

Pulled this off the net...not sure if its still 100% accurate or not.

US Based Carriers:

Alltel = x@message.alltel.com
AT&T = x@mms.att.net
Boost Mobile = x@myboostmobile.com
Cingular (AT&T) = x@mms.mycingular.com
Einstein PCS = x@einsteinmms.com
Sprint = x@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile = x@tmomail.net
US Cellular = x@mms.uscc.net
Verizon Wireless = x@vzwpix.com
Virgin Mobile = x@vmobl.com

Do you happen to know what the basic elements are for those carriers?

They like to brag they are providing the 'real' internet on the iphone, but they are not. When half the sites you visit either use flash or WMV media and you can't enjoy it on the iphone...that's not the real internet. Now I don't expect them to support just any technology that comes along...but hey...flash and WMV, not to mention non-streaming quicktime movies?

Macs cannot even play most WMVs natively, so why would a Mac handheld device?

Ever notice the HAZMAT sticker?

Starbucks can say what they want about the 3 hour training as did the USA Goverment saying shoting down that Sataliete was important due to "toxic substances", anyway, basically, all starbucks on the Apple system are from one system such as a Starbucks itunes or whatever, they need to update this eventually due to the fact if SDK is widely open to download etc people in starbucks will want to aswell, thats my opinion so ye :D

Actually The US Government satellite shoot-down is related because it retroactively forced Starbucks to close down and remove Hydrazine from its green menthe compound used in several of its drinks. ;)

So, is this the last of the news from today?

Macbook and Macbook Pro updates and an incremental iphone/ipod touch update. Not bad, but if Apple is making this an annoucement day, then they should at least tell us what's going on with the SDK.

Youtube doesnt host copyrighted materials....so youtube just doesnt cut it for me and many other people

I have to admit however, with over a 100 contacts in my addressbook, asking each one their carrier, and then having to enter the addresses in 100X is an effen PITA. :) MMS would be MUCH better.
